Help: I've tried a lot of stuff over the years, but it seems like I still can't solve this flaw

HalcyonDweller·1/29/2018, 5:33:39 PM·10 votes·1,306 views

I've managed to deal with pretty much all other forms of toxicity in my habits. I stopped raging at teammates who flame anyone else on the team (this was from several years ago). I've avoided receiving punishments, and I've learned how to be kind to teammates. Heck I even try to help spread what I've learned here, by sharing techniques for communication and leadership so that people who have received chat restrictions or bans get an opportunity to learn a better way than flaming.

But this one fucking thing I can't seem to get over. When my opponents pick a strategy that I perceive to be anti-fun, my vision goes red. I talk mountains of shit. And I piss off my friends in voice comms.

I'm talking about things like:

  • Playstyles that involve not playing the same game as everyone else (Singed, Blue Ezreal, Illaoi - more that she forces you to play dodge the hentai for 20 fucking seconds if she succeeds with Test of Spirit)

  • Harass-heavy ranged top laners (Karthus, Karma, Gnar and Vayne)

  • Champions that can erase your entire power-fantasy (Yasuo Wind Wall) or can even erase the counterplay to one of their teammates with one button (Morgana Shield)

  • Champions that can do absurd amounts of damage (or other effects) with little to no effort - champs with really high agency (Illaoi Ult, Bard Poke this preseason, Twitch Ult, Zoe's Sleep and Paddle-Star, Lee Sin, Nasus since rework, etc.)

And I end up saying things like, "What kind of skumbag does ___ to their opponents?"

So here's my plea, help me out:

What do you do when your opponents are playing stuff that is frustrating to deal with? How do you deal with it so that you don't tilt and spread your tilt to others around you?

To me tilt is all about expectations. The most tilting thing in this game for me is when I expect a matchup to be easy for me, but then something unexpected happens (jungle camp, enemy is not at my skill level, I'm playing poorly that day) and everything just goes to shit. We all tilt over different things, but this is what gets me.

I don't know how you'd work on this, but I've found that I can put off most of the frustration and annoyance until the end of the game. I just go through the motions and play by the book, which isn't the best but helps avoid the poor decision making that comes with tilt a little bit, and when the match is over I immediately take a step back and go do something else for a little while. If I can clear my head and give myself time to deal with those negative emotions I can reliably avoid bringing them into the next game. Even just going to make a sandwich or hot beverage is enough time, I just need to do something that takes my focus off of the game that just happened.

That's not to say I won't tilt in the next game, because while I can play without the effects of tilt after short break I know I have a much shorter fuse the second time around, but I'll play my most reliable champion and try to match my expectations as best I can.

I guess my advice isn't about preventing tilt, because that's the million dollar problem, it's to give yourself whatever time you need to not bring it to your next game. You could try to change your expectations, but that's easier said than done and I wish you the absolute best if you go this route.

What do you do when your opponents are playing stuff that is frustrating to deal with?

Roam. Lane swap. Farm for late-game. Avoid fights. And, at the end of the day, accept that not every lane or every game is winnable and set my new goals accordingly. It's surprising how much fun can be had by taking a game with a Proxy Singed and turning it into "how hard can we push mid lane" or "ALWAYS TOWER DIVE." Often those strategies can even work.

The long and short of it is that everyone is frustrated by some subset of champions, and it's infuriating to play against the one or two things that really bother you. So just set your in-game goals on sights other than necessarily winning the lane or trade, and seek out your fun in unconventional ways.

I hate Illaoi as well. I certainly feel what you feel.

I never rage and flame or get toxic in any of my games, and I rarely get bad tilts, but going against Illaoi is just painful.

A few things you could do and this has help me at least, either ban the champions that irritate you the most, or just buy the champion and play a crap ton of it.

First, you learn a lot about the champion and understand better what it is that makes this champion so annyoing and how other players deal with you.

Second, you get to enjoy being a total dipshit.

I'd suggest reviewing youtube videos of higher elo players and observe how they deal with these champs

Friend, I feel you. I think my most annoying run ins this past season/preseason were with Vayne, MF, and Annie all in the top lane. These are things that I personally feel SHOULD NOT be viable in top lane in any respect, and they can easily make my blood boil because I feel like I’m immediately on the back foot.

My best practice is to understand that, in those lanes, my goal is NOT to win lane. I have to accept the fact that I will likely lose lane and lose tower. What I focus on instead is trying to farm as well and as safely as I can, trying not to get zoned out of experience, and trying to plan where else on the map you can exert your influence and start planning for the mid game, easily the most important phase of the game right now. You won’t always win those kinds of games, but you don’t end up feeling utterly helpless or like you’re a burden to your team.

Take it as a way to improve and learn more about those matchups, eventually you'll be able to win ! Loosing isn't a big deal it's even better than winning if you really want to practice, review your replays, understand what you could have done better in this situation. Learn good counterpicks, Repeat :)

Every champion has powerspikes, moments/situations where you can or cannot fight him and so on, but every champion has his weakness too Illaoi is weak when not near her tentacles, zoe is way too predictable when she use ult so you can cc+burst her as quick as she can burst you, same for twitch, nasus is pretty weak early you need to deny him as much cs as possible, forcing him to stay back is the only way to win you really don't want him to get his stacks, play aggressive early and buy an item with QSS propriety mid/late game to escape his wither.

You just need to practice a lot against them, recognize when they reach powerspikes and where you can fight them or not. You'll always have to adapt your play style to their champions, sometimes you need to be more passive and farm it up, sometimes you just need to be extremely aggressive or he'll out-scale you.

Anyway always take a lose against an hard matchup as a way to improve next time you're in a similar situation :)

Hmm.. I've never thought of anything like that. Basically, my mindset is, they're all in the game, they all have weaknesses and reasons to be in the game. They aren't straight up OP, or else it wouldn't be in the game.

So there must be counterplay, there must be weaknesses attached to their strengths.

I am anivia mid main, I deal with yasuos ALL the time. I HATE the windwall... but I guess I tend to look inward. I think of it as, it's my fault for not predicting the windwall, moving to the side and shooting around it. I tend to try to predict the wall, bait it out. It's just another part of the game now. No reason to get mad about it.

It's your fault (my fault) for not knowing how to play around it and yasuo has incredible weaknesses to make up for the BS windwall lol. So I feel like a baby if I get upset about it.

I don't know if this helps at all... you seem to think that what you perceive as anti-fun, is a direct decision made by the player to use it so that you don't have fun. Idk, maybe some people do, but they are all available champs, made by Riot, why would I not play it just because it's gonna piss some players off? Its a part of the game. If parts of the game piss you off, it's still your decision to play the game... anti fun, and all. So get mad at yourself.

I don't have a good answer, other than to play harder and win in spite of their bullshit =P

And yeah, I hear you on Illaoi. The combination of being forced to play a minigame when she hits Test of Spirit, then still killing you with her ult even when you've outplayed her other abilities, is incredibly tilting.

Edit: pronouns O.o

I just shut up and focus 150%. It's tiring, it's annoying and I don't like doing it, but I know I have to do it if I want to win, so I do it anyway.

warning: gameplay advice coming from only a silver4 player

Typically if you are having trouble with counterplay issues, then the only solution is to get better at the game. Judging from your OP.gg you probably are around the Silver5 MMR or so, which means my game knowledge should be around the same as yours, so be cautious when taking my advice.

Vayne VS Caitlyn match up should heavily favor Caitlyn as she out ranges Vayne alot. However, people around our ELO don't really know how to use trading stance, so Vayne gets away from getting unpunished many of the times. Many also don't know how to end games when ahead, which means that it gives time for Vayne to scale and steamroll them, even if they DID punish her in the laning phase.

These people then come here and complain that Vayne is OP, but that is because her weakness is not being abused.

It's probably the same case for the enemies that you don't know how to go against and that causes you frustration. Now I'm a support (Zyra) main, so I won't know as much about top vs top or JG vs top match ups as well as you, but you can try to look up how the higher tier players play against such a match up, maybe even go as far as watching the OneTricks do their stuff. Go to twitch.tv or youtube.com and look up "WuKong VS Singed" or something like that and watch how they move, pay attention to their build order, their pathing, their timing on using skills or how they go in.

Keep in mind I'm a self claimed creative support and I try to think of ways to play against my enemies (at my level, cos my mechanics suck). I've played every champ for at least 10 times, and kind of know what each champ does and what I perceive to be their strengths/weakness. From that, I attempt form my own counters with my deep creative champion pool. Infact, I get an extra kick out of thinking of ways to try to counter them, so I really don't share your frustration.

Then again, people get away with alot of stuff at our ELO cos we are just bad at the game. Anyone with slightly better gameplay knowledge will steamroll me. But the end of the day, if you know how to deal with them, then you'll be less frustrated, as you'll know "this will be the outcome of my matchup."

So, not relevant to any of your other stuff, but worth a mention. If you don't kill the tentacle that illois E spawns, you don't have to do shit. They only slam on spawn, and then her W and R. If you kill it, another spawns and slams, but leave it alone and kill it after and you're fine.
