Riot employee admits that I got punished because other players harassed me in game.

Hello guys, this is going to be one long vent post, so I'll have a tl;dr section below.

tl;dr:

I got harassed in a ranked game, and I got banned for using sarcasm to call the person out.

What happened?

I was reported a few games because my team was convinced I was inting in ranked (for the record, I was not) and harassed me throughout the game. I decided to poke fun of them and use sarcasm to point out what they were doing was not okay. it's important to note that I did NOT resort to insults to character/race/gender/political view/sexual orientation or any kind of words that would offend anyone's personality or character.

a few days later, to my surprise, I got a chat restriction and honor reset (by extension I lost season rewards). I got that "I understand" message that pops up with "evidence" of my "crime". Here is the problem, in the entire chat log I did not insult anyone or was the aggressor in any kind of behavior that directly or indirectly slander anyone.

Here is what I'll admit to doing, whenever a teammate called me out for "inting" I would repeat what they said to me in a sarcastic manner. What do you mean? you could ask me, here is an example:

My jungler: Holy shit, this top lane [me in this case] is inting!!

My response: Ofc man! I was inting, how could you explain my death to 3 people.

and every time they said something like that I would reply to something similar.

What did I do?

I sent a ticket to riot telling them that I just got punished for not doing anything at all? I was doing exactly what 99% of the league community does. The first time, it was a "live chat" with a riot employee that told me that I could do whatever I want, he wouldn't even consider my appeal seriously and left the chat while I was still trying to explain the situation.

My experience with riot support:

Here is an interesting quote from his answers. (I will post the source to the ticket if any riot employee wants to dispute anything I say to be false)

so according to the first rioteer, I was punished not for insulting someone but for hurting the team's morale.

it's worthy to note that I kept asking the guy to point in the "chat log" to which line specifically caused my punishment, and all I got was I hurt the team's morale. [because what kind of monster hurts his teammate's morale in an online game?]

when the first rioteer simply ditched me when I questioned his logic, I submitted a ticket this time instead of live chat and I got an auto-response from a bot with the chat log. I again protested the fact that the chat log shows no insults whatsoever to anyone. However, I will admit I did tell some teammates that they sucked at League.

this is the answer that I got:

I completely get how tilting other players can be when they're verbally harassing you throughout the whole game, so I'll go ahead and look into any players from this game and action accordingly as we definitely don't want them to ruin other players' games as well. However, you are ultimately in control of your own actions and not that of others. Oftentimes, engaging with negativity only contributes to it and that's something we don't want to condone either. I've looked into the logs and I am seeing some troubling negative behaviors. Specifically, I'm seeing a lot of arguing, calling others out on their performance, blaming others, and taunting others. Due to these behaviors, I've determined that the chat restriction is accurately applied to your account. I won't be able to lift the restriction or return your honor.

here is the funny part, no where did I ask him to ban anyone or investigate my harassment in the game (we all know its just part of the game) yet this rioter admitted that I was the one being harassed in the game... he brought it up without me asking him to (which only serves to prove that I wasn't the aggressor).

the bullshit reason that I got punished for and denied season rewards was the "troubling negative behaviors" that only a monster would commit! which is... wait for it!... seriously wait for it, it's groundbreaking and unheard of in the history of league! What is it you might ask? it's " lot of arguing"!!!!

I am genuinely curious as to how many of my fellow summoners in this Reddit got banned in the game for arguing with a teammate? I have 0 problems posting the entire chat log that got my season rewards punished.

Conclusion

it should not be up to riot to determine how people should speak, I have the right to express myself how I see fit for as long as I do not insult anyone personally. there is a giant difference between telling a player that they suck (which happens every game) and making racist/homophobic/sexist comments, but according to those two rioters, I deserve the same treatment.

I'm so jealous. I couldn't even get that. I guess they got tired of people complaining and added it to the copy/paste.

There seems to be confusion about what toxicity is for you. Which is understandable as outside of the regular definition for toxic waste; there is some flexibility. A safe way to interpret toxicity is something that can negatively impact games. Now, that gives us a really broad definition which people may or may jot try to bend to their needs. Such as: Picking a champ off meta Banning a hovered champ (debatable) Not ganking Having a bad game Etc.

Those are seemingly overlooked by Riot because the intent isn't to make the game worse (benefit of doubt). Now toxicity does include verbal and gameplay things. Gameplay you usually look at INTENTIONAL feeding (because being actually bad at a game should not be punishable outside of rrgular consequences), trolling (when confirmed), and griefing. Verbal toxicity includes things such as racism, sexism, talking like trash (different from trash talk), extended arguing, and passive aggressive.

Based on logs, I think your case is largely in the passive aggressive area. So while the others involved probably could stand a punishment, that doesn't mean you don't.

Dude it sucks you got punished/banned/chat restricted or whatever, but let's be real, you were toxic in this game.

You know going into the jungle and taking camps is going to trigger your jungler. You did it to piss him off/teach him a lesson since he wouldn't come top.

Calling your teammates bad is negative behavior.

You say this a couple times which is more negativity. Just because you lost lane doesn't mean the game is lost.

There's a whole bunch of unnecessary chat at this point. You complaining about jungle, about Brand, about Jinx, about Mal.

Not sure if this is the same game or not but more trying to trigger the jungler.

Then a bunch more complaining and excessive chatter.

Sounds a bit like you ignored a team fight here or watched your teammate(s) die and just farmed, stood there, based, etc instead of helping which you did since they didn't help you.

Btw poking fun doesn't mean what you seem to think. Poking fun is making a light hearted jab at someone that isn't really meant to hurt/antagonise them. Like if your ezreal shoots his ult backwards on accident and you say, "nice ult ez lol."

Oftentimes, engaging with negativity only contributes to it and that's something we don't want to condone either.

Aka if you're being flamed don't engage with them using sarcasm/anger/etc., because Riot doesn't approve of that and it's only going to make it worse. Two wrongs don't make a right sorta thing.

So? Someone being negative first, doesn't negate your negativity. There is never a justification for being negative/toxic/whatever term you wanna use. You make it seem like you want them to say, 'Ah, I see you were being flamed first so your reaction makes sense. Chat restriction removed.'

I'm not trying to be an ass or anything. I get that it's easy for me to say just ignore them. I've been there. You're losing lane. It's frustrating as it is. You watch your jungler ignore your lane even though it would be the freest kill in the history of LoL. Even worse is knowing if you just got that one gank you could stomp the laner after. THEN they start flaming you for feeding even when you can't help getting dove nonstop. Then everyone jumps on the blame you bandwagon.

But you gotta just mute them and keep on keeping on because ultimately the goal is to win the game. Farm. Ping if you need help. They don't come and you die, oh well. Just keep trying.

It might still be possible to get your rewards. Was it a chat restriction for X number of games? Play the games get unrestricted. Get your honor unlocked and play a bunch of Aram or something to hit lvl 2.
