game lobby opens, i call support. i go kat....game starts, brand is apparently supporting, and im shoved out of lane and we have no jungler, i go mid....yasuo: OMG, TROLL, GET OUT OF LANE, TROLL TROLL...i go top, get killed by riven....whole team: TROLL TROLL TROLL............all game....and now im sitting with what i can assume is 9 reports
So, you're saying you didn't do anything wrong that would earn honest reports?
If the reports were false, they won't do anything. Don't give them reason to be legitimate reports and you'll be fine. Mass reporting also doesn't hurt you any more than a single report does; punishment is calculated per match, not per report. Reports just flag your match to be checked, and more reports can't make the system check it any harder.
Just to throw in my 2 cents here: It's right that reporting you for picking whatever champ in whatever role is no legit reason to report and thus you don't have to worry about.
But you obviously have played it a few more times, than just once. And the results just look bad. Like... real bad. I understand your point of playing whichever champ you want, but there are certain roles that just let them make work better. Supports want either heavy cc and tank stats, or plain range and poke power. Kat has none of these, thus making her not the best pick for support.. I really don't mind creativity in this game, I carried as Support Jayce a long time ago, and I had an astonishing Support J4 in my latest game, who caused havoc all above the opponent. But you should really consider working within the border of a Champions pool of capabilities, rather than spinning a wheel and see what happens. People out there might (obviously) have problems with picks that are THAT much off their usual playground..
And to be honest, ever since TeamBuilder died, I use my Normals for some real stupid stuff as well every once in a while. As long as you don't do these things in Ranked, nobody gets hurt and everything is k.
False reports do nothing.
Just remember that if they're not false, you will eventually be punished.

I take it this was blind pick? If it wasn't blind pick it doesn't really matter what you called, as roles are assigned.
As for their behavior just mute them. As far as the punishment system is concerned there is only one game where you were reported. The number of reports per game, from what I've seen at least, doesn't seem to matter. You would need a few more games where you are reported to even show up on the system's radar, and even then it likely would see that the reports are false.
If you ever do get wrongly punished just come on the boards here, go to the Help & Support section, and under Guidelines on the left hand side click on "submit a ticket". It's not in a great spot, but it's a highlighted link under Culture. Just fill out the ticket as best you can, fill in anything that doesn't really apply with the closest answer available, and things should be handled for you. Just be sure to have some patience.
Dude... Ive played support skarner, Support jarvan, Support trundle(before it was a thing.), support ziggs, top braum, top AP aatrox, mained jungle tryn, and now I main AP mid Sion.
I could keep going on and on with this list, but to just sum it up, been playing off meta in ranked for 6 years, never been banned. Never been suspended, Never even had a warning. And dude Im not toxic, but Im also far from perfect in chat, I get frustrated, and short with people all the time.
So from my experience, it's NEVER just about what champ you pick, and where you go with them that results in a ban. Ive played top kogmaw, WITH A RIOTER IN GAME!!! So yeah man..
Sorry for the rant, but people like OP drive me nuts. You can play how you want if you play to win, and act decent.
Ill usually get at least one dude a week hardcore rages at me for a pick I choose, and then trolls, and ruins the whole game. Guess who gets all the reports.. Not me. :-D
Also last little tidbit on this subject, I do get reported, or at least they say they'll report me, and I tell them to go ahead, and I don't even worry about it, because Im THAT CONFIDENT, that as long as I honor the summoners code, I'm good to go.

i went kat support twice, in the game i won, i was against a braum who was afraid of me that he ran away instead of fighting, so we were able to win lane then game...
it didnt work for me in the second game, so i never did that again
other game (blind pick) i thought i was mid, so i got talon, when game started i realized i was support...it was a bad game
note to self: dont pick assassins as support, go play river or duo jungle, but do not go as support
