The "I did more damage" defense

There are several ways the damage graphs may be inflated, even if the damage you dealt didn't actually result in kills or progress for your team. For example:

  • If you're Brand or any similar mage with Liandry's and Rylai's against a team with tanks, the fact your abilities are AoE and deal %HP damage will inflate the graph because it uses the flat numbers.
  • If you're Illaoi or a similar short-range champ and run into the entire enemy team alone, deal half of everyone's HP, but die without a kill, the damage graphs don't reflect them getting away and/or healing it back up.
  • Likewise for when you don't have Grievous Wounds but keep attacking the ones getting healed instead of the healer.

There are other and more specific examples, but that's just a few. If your damage didn't result in gold for the team, it's meaningless. And even if you want to act like it matters for a loss, you should be looking at your damage compared to the average for your champ for a game of that length, not compared to your teammates.

Nor does it matter if you dealt more damage than an enemy with twice your kills and assists and half your deaths, when you lose anyway. It's especially ridiculous to mention damage graphs in that scenario.

I mean if they're defending themselves then they probably got flamed and didn't deserve it...

Kills aren’t everything. Many times, getting the opponent(s) to back off is all that’s required to take an objective. Remember, the game is won by objectives, not by kills (but they certainly help).

Damage is never the excuse. Objectives taken per given should hold more ground. "I took 3 drags + 2 towers alone while only giving up 1 rift + 2 towers" make better sense.

The concept "If it didn't result in win/ team profit" can be applied to anything. And this is the concept you should always use. However you should also factor in: what have your team been doing while you do that damage ? Sometimes it is just ridiculous how they are afraid to fight with the damage you dealt and your damage is wasted, but still counted. It happens especially often, when you are the only carry in your team and your team is behind (not stomped though). They are afraid to go in even seeing the damage you have done, but still fearing the enemies that won them in lane/ganked them hard. Sorry for creating a rant here, TLDR it really depends, sometimes it is fair to be annoyed to lose with the damage stats you have.

Those are exceptions

I've been saying this forever now, people will never get it. You can end up with a net score of +10, the -5 psycho charger will always brag about outdamaging you.

Teemo mains in a nutshell

you put shrooms everywhere but did it ever kill anyone, did they ever have to fight immediately after at reduced hp and was it enough to be the tipping factor to get them killed?

I mean, regardless the support who isnt building damage out damaging people is pathetic.
