Sexism in League must stop

trAshe Poppy·12/18/2018, 4:17:35 PM·9 votes·4,682 views

Today I encountered some people in the game, both from my team and the enemy team. They were... unintelligent. I believe what me and my friends have witnessed must have been happening already in the game, and probably keeps happening or rising nowadays. Let me explain you what happened today. I played 2 games with my two pals, who were both girls. We were just being us, having fun (and not enjoying the numbers of damage the enemies somehow did to us...) and took care for each other. Then that one teammate goes like: "This is what happens when girls play", "Girls belong to the kitchen", "girls can't play" and so on. This is unacceptable. Not only is that sexism but it also greatly offended my friends, the one more than the other. I am writing all these with the hope that a Rioter will read this and probably get convinced to do something about this matter. This is nothing to joke about. I'd say maybe Riot Games could probably make a video for the community about girls playing the game. We must serve justice. [poppy-wink]

how do people know if you are boy, girl, or other?

Butterwood12/18/2018, 5:57:12 PM9 votes

A few tips:

  • Have thicker skin, the internet is gross
  • Quit finding reasons to say "btw guys I'm a girl, react to this"
  • Play more Ivern, people generally enjoy having one on their team as he is one with the trees

this is just sexism...and while it sucks to deal with it, the fact that your seeing it in a LoL game is erroneous

unfortunately nothing RIOT can do will magically stop people from being sexist

mute -> report -> move on

I think a lot of people in this thread are assuming information that we don't necessarily have;

  • It's possible if they're playing a certain character (Lux, Ahri, Soraka) that a lot of the time, the person is 'assumed' to be a female. I play Mercy and sometimes, without speaking in voice, they immediately guess I'm a girl cause 'girls play Mercy' (whether they're toxic or not is debatable).
  • A passive comment could have tipped the team off to a gender; 'good job girl' or 'girl pls stop' if you're messing around is all it takes for people to know. It's not being an attention hog or begging for people to like you.
  • You shouldn't have to pretend you're not a female just like guys don't have to pretend they're not a guy. Saying you're a girl or even just being ASSUMED you're a girl will get you shit; but that doesn't mean people just have to accept that.

I don't quite get the notion that if you're a female and people find out, suddenly you're totally justified in being harassed. I will say that even if the harassers aren't justified though, unfortunately all you can do is report and mute, and let Riot's system take care of it. It's an automated system, so it'll catch up to them eventually.

This is the Internet. Nobody even knows you're a woman unless you tell them first. If you give somebody information like that, be prepared for it to be used AGAINST you, it's really simple. Don't try to "educate" people, they don't care and you reacting that way just makes them continue, since they got the reaction they wanted in the first place.

riot bann's people or mutes them in game for making remarks like that. however this is the internet , online interactions aren't rated by any one company or group , and anyone can say anything under free speech laws. so long as it does not directly call for physical violence towards your person. riot games has provided a mute function in game for anyone who is bothering you , and it takes 0.2 seconds to click it and your issue is fully resolved. reporting the player after game for riot to review is their course of action for such behavior. also , once again this is the internet , simply by saying you are male or female proves 100% nothing at all. users have no direct way to confirm any of your statements what so ever. so again if you've asked them to stop and they continue to harass you , you may use the provided in game mute function provided to you by riot games. report them after the game for riot to review the chat logs , and then que up for another game.

Sorry you encountered that in game. If you reported them in the post-game, that should suffice to have their actions looked into; otherwise, you could submit a support ticket.

I completely agree. The people saying "why does anyone need to know your gender?" are completely ignoring the fact that players shouldn't have to hide their gender while they play.

its the internet, people will use anything they can to insult you, so you kind of just have to be thick skinned, as well as not indicate your gender in general if you dont want to be harassed. now, im NOT saying it was ok for them to harass you this way, but trolls will be trolls and do whatever they can to piss you off.

however, you can always submit a support ticket.

The best way to fight toxicity is to mute it and ban it.

i didnt know you could have two supports in one game

...

i'll stop (but seriously thats hella sexist you shouldve responded "at least i get some P while you guys get your mom's basement")

I'm sorry, but who cares? Most of my friends in League that I play with are girls. None of them or even the guys ever mention their gender in this game. What should be triggering is mentioning your gender in general. I mean, no one does it unless they're seeking some sort of attention. Which is your own guy's fault for ever mentioning your gender in the first place.

Pandemic Punch12/18/2018, 11:55:57 PM1 votes

People will always reach for the thing that pisses you off. Right now all you are doing is announcing to the world that people still get worked up by these kind of comments. So they are going to keep using them.

If it doesn't offend anyone, they wouldn't say it. Making things taboo makes people want to say them more. If you react heavily to stupid head. They will call you stupid head.

YerroFever12/18/2018, 5:52:00 PM1 votes

Mute and report them. Standing up to them in game only lets them know they got under your skin and they'll just harass you more to try and distract you. Don't let them win this shitty head game. Keep your cool and wreck their face.

If you want to address it at the end of the game, you can but I suggest just ignoring it and reporting them only and moving on. It almost never ends well when engaging with trolls.

Well go prove em wrong then. Get diamond+ then they can't say u cant play.

How did they know you're female?

Edit: Okay reading through the comments I can see why I got downvoted... i wasn't rushing to judgement... i was curious. Were you on discord? Do you think they guessed due to a gender-specific summoner name? Did you mention it in-game? Just curious, not trying to start anything. As a father and step-father to a pair of daughters who play leage (we play as a family, even the wife) it's actually important to me. I don't want them to be harrassed either. I encourage my daughters and sons not to share any unnecessary information online (name, age, gender, location etc). I'm simply wondering how they knew you and your friends were female.

Aladoron12/19/2018, 12:18:15 PM1 votes

Totally unrelated, but how did they know that you are girls? O.o

Sebastit7d5/9/2019, 5:42:16 PM1 votes

This doesn't happen as often as this post implies, I play with a friend who is a girl, adc main, playing all the "egirl" champions you can relate to the stereotypes and has a name that gives away that she is a girl. Not a single time have we encountered behaviour like that. Hell, if anything I've found racist remarks 20x more often since I'm from south america playing in NA and sometimes my grammar shows.

Only times I've ever seen people bring up stereotypes about the girl players has been when it's a Sona, Soraka, Nami, Lux, Ahri, Akali, etc. (with the most expensive skins usually) and some club tag like "EGIRL" with some very feminine name people usually laugh at it and say something like "spot the girl" in a jokingly manner then move on. but never in my 4 years of playing have i encountered anything sexist like that.
