Why does no one speak up for others in game anymore?

I have been playing ARAM casually and have been having excessively rough matches, losses, etc. I am also having a rough time in real life. It is so difficult to not lash out when I am trolled or excessively pinged or talked down to in some of these games. My last match two friends talked crap and pinged me from the beginning for no reason. None.

Yet, no one on the team said anything. Why does no one speak up for others and tell others they're being toxic? Why does no one want to help the situation and just let it happen? Why are these griefing, harassing players getting free passes constantly? Is it really that hard to tell someone to back off or even just throw in a "yeah we'll report them for you, this isn't okay."

Don't hit me with that "it's just ARAM/just a game" BS either. Because it's a reflection of real world behavior affecting real people.

I think it's just because they're scared they're going to get punished for being involved, when it really has to do with the delivery of how they're stepping in and speaking up for someone.

For example, I was playing on my alt account that's only level 21. So I've been playing with a lot of lower level accounts, and new players. Our Jinx didn't know how to CS or position properly, as they were only level 15 and said they were new to the game. The Jungler and Support were flaming her throughout most of the match, and I got tired of it, so I just said:

"Guys keep in mind we are in new account territory. Not everyone is going to know how to play the game. Please don't be mean, and give her tips rather than calling out every mistake she makes".

They stopped after that and Jinx even picked up a few kills along the way. She was performing better because nobody was flaming her anymore. Best part, I stood up for someone and deescalated a tilting situation by being kind and not shifting blame on either party or calling the flamers names or flaming them back.

It's just delivery. I try to stick up for those I see getting flamed in chat all the time, but sometimes people just don't listen, so I just advise the victim to mute and move on and pay attention to the game rather than worry about what someone on the internet has to say.

bc there's no reason to "speak up for others" to trolls

trolls want attention, "defending others" does nothing but give it to them

mute, report, move the hell on

Why does no one speak up for others and tell others they're being toxic?

  1. To them, youre just a random tht they'll never meet after the game is finished. It sounds bad but thats just how it is, no1 in their right mind would put themselves in danger of getting banned for arguing with a toxic player because some random unable to press the mute button.
  2. What will you accomplish by telling some1 they're toxic? Do you rly think they'll be all like "ye u right dude im so sorry for being toxic"? Hell naw.
  3. You dont need to defend yourself in an online enviroment. You have all kinds of features that prevents you from seeing toxic player's words.
  4. Toxic players will sooner or later be banned. All you have to do is give them one report and youre gucci.

Because they are afraid to get banned.

There was a post just like some hours ago where somebody got banned for saying "Saying kys is not funny". So yeah, don't dare to say anything or you will get banned.

On the other hand there is not much reason to defend anybody, you can use the mute button to perfectly defend yourself.

Because you can get punished for it. The system discourages you from using chat

Thank you for these actual responses and suggestions ^^

Well I can't answer your question because I always speak up for others in the game when they are being flamed.

But yeah it's probably that, just like you can get banned for defending yourself, you can get banned for defending someone else.

The only reason I'm not punished is because I first mute the toxic players, and then advise the victim to stop arguing and just muting them because it's not worth it. Just a very little sentence, maybe one or two more about how toxic people are just completely dumb to make the victim feel better about themselves, and insisting that they should just mute.

I haven't been punished so far (not that I know of anyway), so you could try doing that.

And if you're being flamed yourself, I'm gonna say the same thing that's been said 1000 times already : mute at the slightest hint of toxicity.

Oh ok, so we're just supposed to mute that way there's even less potential team communication, and just "hope" other players do the right thing once the match is done.

I tend to try to mediate, telling people to shut up and play, before attempting some advice to whoever's doing poorly.
