Auto losing LP for AFK detection

I will preface this with, I've been on a bit of a losing streak and needing a win.

My team was playing excellent, I was playing pretty well, farming, a couple of kills from roams. I get an urgent phone call which at first I deny (I mean, I'm playing ranked after all). It turns out the phone call was more urgent than I could have imagined. I took it, and was AFK for about 3 minutes. I came back, told them what happened and why I took the call (I won't say why as I'm not looking for sympathy, I want honest opinions) helped the team win, and they were fine with it. After all, my roams helped get them ahead, and I had a pretty nice KDA.

Because of my AFK time, I didn't receive any LP, which makes me question, is the rule for AFKing fair?

I appreciate what the rule is put in place for, and if you legitimately AFK, hence causing your team to lose, you deserve to be penalized. In this situation, I AFKed, my team won. That being said, if someone AFKs and their team wins, should there not be some measure of if they deserve LP or not?

I understand that it's being counted as a loss and I'm not getting that LP back. It is what it is. For future reference, is this something that RIOT can improve? I'd love your thoughts Summoners.

Here's the issue. Let me give you two scenarios from an unbiased perspective. First of all, let's go with your "3 minutes AFK = No LP" thing, which is absolutely not true. Takes much longer than that to be detected. But let's go with your under-exaggerated time.

Scenario 1 - Player was AFK for 3 minutes, team won anyway.

Scenario 2 - Player was AFK for 3 minutes, team won anyway.

Oh dear! I'm Riot's system, and what I see are two games with people who left. People are not supposed to leave games, and I'm programmed to discourage that, so neither person who went AFK gets LP.

How in the Christ is the system supposed to know which game was your game, where you "legitimately" went AFK for 3 minutes vs. someone who maybe ragequit for 3 minutes but decided to come back.

Now here's the kicker - you're supposed to AFK in zero games. Whether your reason was "legitimate" or not, the game was impacted for 9 other people and you don't deserve to be rewarded for that. It's a video game, and real life is absolutely more important, so good on you for taking the emergency call. But you're still not supposed to leave games.

The issue is the following:

  • How do you create an objective measure as to if someone "contributed enough" to "deserve" the game win or not?
  • How do you ensure that people who don't deserve it (i.e. those who are trolling/ragequitting) have as little chance as possible to get LP with this objective measure?
