What is wrong with the LoL community?

For the past two months, I've been having some personal issues with this game. Although it has been written about often before, I would like to know why people are so toxic in this game. About two months ago, I left League for a little while because I could not take it, the way everyone on my team treated me. This happened game after game, and numerous times. And before you give me an answer along the lines of, "Try /mute all?" -- please, there has to be a better answer.

I also feel that Rito does not really care about this kind of behavior. I am beginning to doubt that Riot looks at these reports and does not do enough to stop this. It makes me not want to play all that much. I personally like Riot very much and I can see and agree with the company and their higher ideas about this game -- that development and improvement of the team begins with the individual, etc. etc. And this game has taught me so much about victory and defeat. League does so much what no other game out there can do. I suspect most people who play League won't, or can't, accept just how personal this game can get.

So, I would like to know why this community is toxic and unsportsmanlike. I know that there are sportsmanlike Summoners, because I've met many, but it seems like these are the minority.

Nothing in particular. The issue is just the nature of the game itself. No other game punishes you like League does for having poor teammates, or forces you to stay in a game for 20+ minutes.

So, I would like to know why this community is toxic and unsportsmanlike.

A combination of;

Anonymity Stressful game Larger audience for attention seekers Poor acceptable standards of behavior on the internet. Free to make a new account

Riot does take a more heavy-handed approach against poor behavior, more so than any other game. But the fact of the matter is, Riot can't ban someone before they behave poorly. And there are millions of accounts active in the game, there will always be assholes logged in.

Most communities for competitive games are like this. At least the LOL community is self-aware of how bad it is, most other communities are in denial about it (Looking at you, Blizzard fans)

I have two standard retorts to people who criticize my gameplay:

  1. If any of us were good at this game, we'd be diamond.

  2. I'm good enough at this game to get matched with you.

Tends to quiet them.

Riots banning system is flawed, they are not truly in touch with the core of the problem everyday players face, and from their developers standpoint don't seem like they ever will be.

They won't ban someone who loses and feeds their lane ( and maybe others ). Then refuses to cooperate with team, ( basically has given up the game because they lost their lane ). And subsequently blames every other player, nit picks every mistake. Having the audacity to critique teammates who have worked hard and doing much better than that player ( which is probably the whole team by now ).

But if you allow yourself to be effected by such arrogant, selfish and infuriating behaviors and cuss the guy out, you are the one that is going to be punished. And that person will be let off with ( having a bad game ), continueing on to ruin games and waste other peoples time. Just because he didn't use swear words or vulgarities, or isn't griefing in teamchat but obviously in negatively effecting like 4 other people and is the source of the problem...yeah OK there

Then realize that the majority of US players fall in the Spike category... 'If they're not winning their not having fun'

People enjoy trolling for some reasons. And people always like to act cocky to show they're better than anyone at playing something, like this game is something to be very proud of. Like they can add their skills at the game to their CV. Kids are gonna be kids.

The game encourages toxicity, yet punishes players for expressing it.

Too many 12 year olds play this game.
