If you're looking for a safe space, competition isn't for you.

Whether or not people get punished for it, the harsh reality is that a team-based competitive game where your allies are almost always strangers and their actions are very capable of undoing good performance from yourself will always harbor feelings of anger and frustration towards teammates who fuck up.

Continuously dragging on and on about how someone was a meanie to you because you somehow went 0-13-0 unintentionally is just ridiculous. If you can't handle the kind of environment created by this type of game, this type of game isn't for you. If you don't want to deal with the reality, go play a different game. Because no number of punishments dealt is going to change the nature of this one. There are plenty of free to play Player vs. AI games where anyone you play with is working towards the same goal; there's no reason for you to be playing a game where half the people you play with are trying to beat you.

Club Penguin Island was released last year, if you can't handle a rated T game.

Edit: Someone in the comments hit the nail right on the head. I'm not encouraging flaming. Of course not. Usually that only tilts your teammates. But, "if you can't take the heat, get out of the kitchen." While the main body of this post is me saying that picking a different game is a solution, muting everyone is also a way to guarantee you'll never encounter any heat.

If you're just looking to bm, competition isn't for you.

Someone saying "SUCK MY DRAGON BALLS NERDS" while getting a pentakill with AurelionSol in a game is competitive trash talking and bullshitting. This is acceptable in a safe space.

Someone saying "GO TO HELL F&&&&T N&&&&R" is toxic, racist flaming and has no place in the game. This has no place in a safe space.

Learn the difference between competitive trash and utter flaming racism and hostility. They're two completely different kind of insults, and the latter is completely unacceptable in any environment. No one should be flamed and harassed in any environment, and that's all people ask for when it comes to safe spaces.

Why is it always "they need to take it" and not "I should learn more self-restraint?" It's not as if your flaming is productive. Most times when we talk about safe spaces it's unproductive because debate is good. But this...this has no merit. It's just I want to tell this guy he sucks.

I've said a few things on these boards that would solve the issue:

  1. Playing 8 champs over 10 games is a bannable offense (in ranked)
  2. Normals need incentives. Why should you gain levels, get mastery, be eligible for chests, and complete quests in ranked? That isn't what ranked is for. Go to ranks to gain LP and maybe get M6 & M7 tokens. That's it.

If they did this, you'd have substantially less problems.

If you are looking for a "safe space" to be toxic in, this game isn't for you.

I wonder, as I often do when I see comments like this, who exactly are you speaking to? Do you honestly think there is a legion of chihuahua-kin shivering at their computers in breathless fear that someone is going to call them a doody-head? I mean, really?

The truth is that most of the people who play League just want to have fun. You know what isn't fun? Some jackhole who has mistaken themselves for funny or who has decided they're God's freaking gift to the game unleashing a torrent of verbal diarrhea to no good purpose. When jerks drive away business, businesses remove the jerks. That's just how the world works.

people just need to stop using chat to flame people. thats it. use it for what its intended for to share information about the game/situation at hand.

like if you are top and they ganked you you can say in chat jungle top or whatever. to directly flame and talk shit to each other isnt what chat is there for.

GEEZUS CREST when will the immature assclowns learn its not ok to treat people like shit over a video game

If someone acts shitty towards me, then I'll treat them like shit. This is how reality works.

While it is true competition is never a "safe space", being a jackass is never acceptable in any kind of sport.

You can compete without being a dick. It's very much possible.

Why can't competition be congruent with safe spaces?

It isn't as though competition = assholery.

I mean sure, you're likely to get jerks in competition. And in safe spaces. Work. School. At the club, resort, and spa.

In spite of that, I suggest they can exist together and the two are not mutually exclusive. It seems to me, what has been lost is the concept of gentlemanly sportsmanship.

Find a way to restore that (I propose a return to 'idealized' Victorian values. We can start with steampunk so it's fashionable) and you have a safe, polite, yet competitive environment.

I'd rather lose with an awesome and polite person on my team, than win with one of our teammates being a total ass-clown. Same goes for other video games, my bowling league, doubles in racquetball, etc.

I guess the difference is those who care more about 'winning' instead of having a 'love of the game'.

If you have a love for the game, you'll always have a great time. If you only have a love for winning - well, get familiar with disappointment.

Gutenspiel.

If you're looking for a safe space to flame others, LoL isn't for you.

Have you been in competition besides this video game? Flaming, berating, and toxicity is not productive, in any competitive atmosphere, whether it’s sports, video games, or freakin checkers.

Edit: okay never mind, reading through your responses in the thread make it clear to me, league of legends is the extent of your competition. No need to hang out here anymore lol. Have a good day.

Let's look at this game, shall we:

  • Mistakes are never a good thing, so you shouldn't feel free from criticism whenever you make one
  • In competition, the singular goal is to win; not to "have fun" not to "enjoy yourself" but to WIN. That's the defining aspect of competition: there are winners and losers, nothing else.
  • In a game where you play on a team--this is one that applies to ALL sports--you have no control over 4 other players. There will always be this looming feeling that you have no control over your side's circumstances. That feeling is usually negative.
  • There are winners and there are losers. Losers lost and Winners won. Winners will do what winners do, and that's celebrate. Winning feels good; Losing doesn't.
  • Five people will come out victorious; Five people will come out lesser than the other five.
