Is the League Community Too "Soft"?

People have been getting banned left and right for toxicity. When I get into a game and I can't handle my teammates, I'll admit, I will say some harsh things. Even when I say things like, "Why exactly did you do that?" people will tell me I'm flaming them and I'm salty. I rarely ever report people, the only time I actually do is when they are actually being dick heads. I see people joking around all the time, like when someone kills me they might say something like, "rekt." I don't mind at all. That just gives me an opportunity to say "rekt" when I kill him. And It's funny! Can we all just do each other a favor and stop being so soft? If someone gets into the game and just starts cussing everyone out and is obviously trying to make people angry on purpose. Then go ahead and report them.

Overall I do think most of the League community is too soft.

Firstly, don't believe the face-value stories given about "I was banned for nothing, just this one little thing I said in an isolated moment of anger". Banned players are players that have either been warned several times to stop their poor behavior, or were so drastically toxic they warranted an escalated response.

When those banned players come here and post a chat log they are usually not sharing the ENTIRE story. They aren't sharing the lead-up incidents where they were warned to stop misbehaving. They are, in many cases, only showing an edited portion of the chat log to make themselves look better. And ultimately, those banned players pitching sob stories to the playerbase are the vocal minority. They are NOT average players, they are exceptions that are making a really big deal about it to try and avoid punishment. They aren't just losing their cool once or twice, they are doing it constantly and regularly.

Think about it this way: You and your friend Bill go to the park to play basketball. You meet two guys, Dale and Chip. You play some 2 on 2, and the other guys win. Dale winks smiles and says you played like old grandpas, then points his thumb at the hoop and asks if you want to go another round. Chip thumps his chest and gets right up in your personal space yelling at the top of his lungs how frail and weak you are, and how easy it was to beat you and how terrible you played.

Bill has to go to an appointment, so he excuses himself and leaves. You still want to play, but now it's a 1v1. Both of the enemy players engaged in trash talking. Both made jokes about you being old and frail when they beat you. But one did so with a friendly wink, one did so with aggressive yelling. Who would you wish to play with again?

The average League player is a Dale. It's the Chip's who get banned, then come to the boards sobbing and telling biased stories to get people on their side. League community and Riot player behavior only look "soft" because the Chips of the world feel like they are entitled to be as big a dick as they want and it's everyone else's problem if they "can't handle it".

TL;DR: bans are not happening as often or as easily as the banned want you to believe. The banned simply don't want to admit they need to stop being dicks like Chip.

'Left and right' is incorrect. Remember that the people who come to the boards to complain are a vast minority. And I mean a VAST minority.

And 'why exactly did you do that' is NOT a helpful statement. If they made a bad play and they know it, what do you want them to say? Are you seriously forcing them against the wall just to admit to you they made a bad play? It's not constructive to play. If it's a repeated mistake, offer helpful advice, then move on, but saying 'why did you do that' is never going to be helpful to someone.

Apparently, if the only thing you say is "gg ez" you're likely to get reported.

Eh, I'll report anything that's a straight up insult. Even if it's fairly minor. Reasoning being that if it's not something they typically do, they won't get in trouble for it, but if it's part of an ongoing trend, it's important they be flagged for it.

Caveat: I don't report light, well-intentioned jabs or obvious sarcasm.

Welcome to modern society, where we're taught to take offense to even the slightest gesture or word, and freak out about everything, suing left and right.

There's a difference between playfully jabbing your enemies behind your team chat, and flaming the shit out of them in all chat.

Basically, if you're being unsportsmanlike, I'll report you. The caveat for me is that you can trash talk the enemy team all you want, as long as it doesn't spill out into all chat. If it does, I report. Same goes for the flipside, you can call me a bronze baddy til the cows come home, I just don't want to hear it myself.

This isn't just a game, it's a sport. As such, you act sportsmanlike. You touch gloves in boxing/MMA fighting (or get roundhouse kicked to the face Chuck Norris style by Holly Holmes), you shake hands after a game, and you treat people with a little goddamn respect. I don't care if you were matched with the worst Riven NA, you pretend not to care, and then you can whine about it on your tumblr, twitter, or whatever the fuck you use to vent frustrations out of.

Teal Deer; treat strangers like you would a superior/boss/coworker/mutual acquaintance. In other words, just don't be an asshole. Your friends are fair game, as long as you do it in a playful manner, and are not trying to tear them down.

People can be toxic for several reasons. And yes the community in League of Legends beyond easily offended. I will say what I want and I do not care if I offend people. If someone is offended, no matter how much you dislike it that person has the right to say what he/she desires. Freedom of expression, speech and press. Ever heard of those?

If I was sitting across from you and the two of us got into what Riot considers to be a toxic conversation, do you think someone is going to punish us? No. If someone would try to that would be violating the constitutional rights. If someone tried to use force then I would respond with greater force.

You should not have to be in fear of being punished in LoL for expressing yourself. The only thing you or anyone should be punished for is death threats, threats of harm and racial slurs.

What do you think?

Yes, the League community is too soft, but it's also too toxic.

"Soft" is a massive understatement.

I can't understand why people take small, competitive trash talk to heart. Nobody is necessarily meaning to hurt each other, it's actually kind of fun/funny and I personally enjoy it a lot.

"gg ez" "oh wait this isnt a bot game" "only used one hand"

But people would probably confuse this with a death threat, something that actually should be reported as harsh and offensive.

People often don't seem to be able to draw the line between playful banter and being toxic af, sadly.

Also, the people who are actually punished are pretty much the minority, and by a large margin, they are just much more loud than the people on the other side (like, you won't see too many threads that read "omg I have never been banned, rito plis).

Nothing scare me more than high sensitive people who will report anyone who say gg ez or something dumb like that because they are too soft skinned. So yeah I agree with you OP. Back in S1, this was never a thing. It now a charming soft league.

Weathered12/14/2015, 7:48:58 PM1 votes

It's not that people are soft, although I can see where you are coming from. It's more because people eventually got fed up with the amount of people who flipped s--- over nothing, so it's easier to just chat restrict or ban then rather than having a seminar to talk about their problems. Most of the time people take the game to seriously and go past the line with what they say, which is unnecessary in almost every case. If people were just nice and chill I'm sure reports would cut in half and about 40% of people in silver would actually be in the ELO they belong in.
