Riot silencing free speech

Recently i got banned for saying kys in chat even tho the person i said it too was 0/12/1 and left the game after we didn't surrender but no I am the one that deserves to be banned even tho i literally was nice to my team and the enemy but one guy decided you know what i don't like when people talk freely so fuck you people. I also think riot should rebalance the banning system as all it does is ban people that speak freely never the feeders never the toxic assholes nope if you want to say something best not on league . I wonder how long this board is gonna be up before riot decides "Nope he has too much of an opinion take it down."

It's great that this comic exists, because too many people use the term "freedom of speech" without understanding what it really entails.

.......

Also, there isn't a time where you're suddenly above the law just because of someone else's doing. If someone is inting, verbally abusing others, etc, it doesn't give you the chance to be toxic back; given if Riot allows this then every game becomes a race to see who can be the most toxic. You can however, defend within certain reasonable bounds without going all the way into the flaming city, and mute and/or report them afterwards.

As one of the people who would be making this call...it will be pretty much forever, provided it doesn't start violating any board rules. Having an opinion is 100% fine. Expressing it in a manner that violates board rules isn't. You're good.

As for the specific topic, Riot isn't silencing free speech -- free speech specifically means that the government cannot censor your speech, NOT that private organizations can't set behavioral rules and punish you for by denying you service when you violate them. You can't go into your neighborhood Starbucks and scream slurs at other customers without being kicked out, nor can you tell people to kill themselves on Riot's servers and expect to maintain full access. It's the rules of the private organization on how they want to do business, and it's 100% legal.

They also do punish intentional feeders, so it if WAS intentional then the system should identify that behavior eventually and hit him. It's possible, however, that he was simply having a really bad game, which is not against the rules.

All freedom of speech means is that the government can't stop you from saying stuff. If a company like Riot decides you're being an asshole, they have every right to show you the door. If you're raging inside a restaurant and insulting other patrons, you get kicked out. Same with League.

hopefully you learn from it. "kys" has no place in this community; you have freedom of speech, but not freedom from consequences. you admit to toxicity, and wonder why you got banned? smh

Raeyxx12/30/2017, 6:46:25 PM7 votes

It's "freedom of speech" not "freedom of speech without consequences" as my Dad used to say.

As for telling someone to kill themselves, that is NEVER acceptable, no matter what the situation. It's a game and you're telling someone to commit suicide over it. Like, seriously? What the hell is wrong with you?

  1. kys is considered hate speech and is insta 14-day ban
  2. you have the right to say what you want yes, but riot also has the right to say they don't want that language in their community. you still have to deal with consequences of your language

There is a difference between free speech and toxic speech. Keep in mind that your rights end where other's starts.

Nothing forces you to be toxic. If you start to have be toxic, wether in your behavior or in the chat, you're faulty. There is no acceptable reasons for you to tell someone to kill himself.

The report system only triggers if you report someone. Otherwise, nothing will happen to the said toxic player.

Goodbye.

chat logs?

Are you serious? Are you justifying your act of bullying someone into suicide? Do you realize what you have done, and now you seek others to side with you? Would you like to be bullied into suicide? No. Really. Would you?

So telling someone to kill themselves over a game is fine in your eyes?

"I hope you step on Lego."

I can sit here and debate freedom of speech, or your misunderstanding of that freedom, but it's such a waste of time. Simple enough, you used a phrase associated with suicide. It's a very serious thing. You were shown the door and asked to never return.

Yeahhhhhhhhh no. The kys is a death threat which is punishable in real life. You got what you deserved. I will agree with you that their social punishment system is fucked however when it gets to people like you it makes me sit there and wonder if the benefits out way the bullshit.

I'll give you an example that was used recently.

Nazi's have every right to voice their opinion, and I have every right to punch them in the face, and the police have every right to jail me.

Freedom of speech does not preclude your from consequences, and more importantly: YOU DO NOT HAVE FREEDOM OF SPEECH IN A GAME it is a privately (riot) owned server and you sign a eula to play that states riot has every right to ban you at their discretion.

Xurreal12/31/2017, 3:02:16 AM1 votes

This is intellectual property (IP for short).

As such, what goes on in another person's IP is controlled for the sake of protecting the IP as well as the targeted audience it is intended for.

It is business. Them silencing you for saying potentially harmful things (which is decided at their sole discretion) is them protecting the interests of the IP as well as the targeted audience. You have the right to free speech. They have the right to not do business with you.

TL:DR Freedom of Speech means that you can say what you want without fear of censorship. However, Free Enterprise is the counterpart to that here.

This is the biggest dump of horse sheiiiit I have heard in a long time here. The issue with LOL is not champion balancing, runes, ip or blue essens or whatever, the biggest issue is that a huge part of the player base thinks it is acceptable to type "KYS", "I hope u get cancer" and worse things then that. It is the "I will never meet the other person, so I can say whatever I want guilt free" mentally. What RIOT needs to do, is to be better at giving feedback on Bans for people like the author of this post. "Report" is the top 3 word in chat after "and" and "*****"... Just sad, people needs to grow up.

Got the same treatment, was permanently banned for mentioning Auschwitz. Riot is definitely a Jew company, that's why they are so greedy with money.

No freedom of speech in this game.

Leaf on Bush3/8/2018, 3:52:51 PM1 votes

So your opinion was that the player should kill himself?

While Necromancy may be handy (and sometimes needed) in video games, it's not the case for old forum threads. Please avoid using such magic and be mindful of how old threads are before posting.
