Tying ranked rewards to behavior is fine, tying rewards to a date of siad behavior is not.

2017 Ranked Rewards Eligibility

Hello my fellow players, I recently got a 14 day ban, the ban was warranted and I was willing to come back after and become a better player. However I am just amazed that the date of my offence is what determines if I get the rewards, why cant I just receive said rewards at a later date, if they feel that the time before distribution is not enough to show if I reformed? Why is the article informing players that they can not receive rewards because of the time gap published AFTER the final date to receive rewards? I am fine with riot determining that sportsman ship and good player behavior is necessary to earn the rewards, BUT im not fine with your chance to prove you can reform is limited to 3/4th of the year. I remember riot taking away other players rewards two weeks after they gave them the rewards, so obviously they have full control over handing the rewards out and taking them away whenever. Which leads me into the point of, if a player has shown reform, but it is not enough time to determine if its true reform THEY CAN JUST TAKE THE REWARDS AWAY THEN. This just feels like such a poorly designed system, doing something wrong before august 22nd should be no less severe that doing something after that date. Riot please keep two week punishments two weeks not a life time. Instead of wanting to come back and prove that I can be better, I will probably just quit, if this system is meant to reform players, not punish them to the point of uninstalling I must say the system has failed me.

TLDR; Give players a chance to reform regardless of their date of offense. Also publishing the article before the end of the grace period instead of after might be a better idea XD, much love <3 (Also my suspension was totally fair, I have no problem with that, but I do have a problem with the way they handle this last day to screw up system)

Because it is 2017 Ranked Season rewards. Not "hey, thanks for not being toxic (anymore)" rewards. Your 14 day ban suggests that you are unable to show reform before the end of the 2017 Ranked Season. Thus, you don't receive ranked rewards. I wish you the best in your reform efforts for the 2018 ranked season.

THEY CAN JUST TAKE THE REWARDS AWAY THEN

Yeah, but that's bad business. Every time things are given away, but then forcibly returned is essentially acting in bad faith. It changes the narrative from "This player did not earn the rewards and thus never received them" to "The criteria for rewards were changed/Riot screwed up at some point" if they have to take the rewards away. Functionally, there's no real difference. The perception of the difference, however, is crucially important. As a business, Riot wants to look good to current and potential future consumers.

doing something wrong before august 22nd should be no less severe that doing something after that date.

To a degree, I agree with you here. I'm not convinced that people with 14-day bans slightly before or significantly before that day deserve full ranked rewards. Maybe Riot has some data that shows the timeframe from August 22nd to the end of the season is actually how long it takes the average player to show reform, but I find that explanation unlikely because its inconsistency with the '3 months' approximation.

My best guess is what I call the "feels bad" decision process. Essentially, it 'feelsbadman' for someone half a year ago to fuck up and never at all receive ranked rewards for the season. By the same token, it feels unfair to regular, unbanned players to see toxic players get the same loot regular players earned. August 22nd is probably the intersection of those two ideas, where a regular player sees the toxic behavior as "long enough ago" to not be bothered by it, and once-banned players see the date as "not unnecessarily punishing" to past mistakes without the opportunity to reform.

Hey I appreciate the involvement with the survey, but it would be awesome if someone could explain their perspective on this issue to me :)

The only thing I can think of is that because this rule was technically there for a while and no one noticed it it stands more than a new rule would. Other than that, maybe they believe that the time required to reform is too short to be "authentic" so they decide to not make it a factor in reform. I personally think anything that aides in reform should be examined. Punishing players is akin to throwing people in jail. The jails are full and people are getting worse. You can beat 'em when they're down in self-righteous fury but it doesn't really help anyone. (I'm kinda toxic but not punishable toxic so I'm not a permabanned person myself) so I consider my points pretty fair.
