I don't know why this has to be said

There are some things you shouldn't joke about or use as insults. It doesn't matter if you think it's funny or not, or if it's attacking someone or not, some things are just not okay, for example:

-Suicide: I went through a thread where someone posted how an enemy jokes about a famous streamers suicidal intentions. Most of the thread was fine, but some people dismissed the joke since it wasn't "go kill yourself" and just "dark humor".

It doesn't matter if it's dark humor or not, when you joke about suicide, you're making someone's feelings into a joke. You're telling them that it doesn't matter and that they are a joke.

-Mental illness/disabilities: This one seems to stem from early Internet, where people think it's okay to call someone autistic and use it as an insult, sometimes calling them the r slur. I've seen it many times, and it's really disheartening, because you know what? Some people are autistic, and saying stuff like that is really messed up and inforces that being autistic is not okay.

-Sexual assault: This goes for everything. I don't see how people find it funny when joking about child sexual abuse when someone plays Annie. Or telling someone they're going to rape someone.

-Racism: Like, what year is it? What gives you the thought that it's okay to call someone the n slur? What makes you think it's okay to make racist comments about any race?

Sorry if this seems random, but I thought just saying "don't be a dick" wasn't specific enough, and people needed example of what not to do, because some people don't understand that "being a dick" doesn't specifically mean "insulting someone". You can add other things I missed and I'll probably add it in.

I don't know why this has to be said but there is a difference between jokes and insults. Jokes are jokes and are only offensive if you take offense to them. I have dealt with suicide and rape with family and friends and I still laugh at those jokes because they are jokes. If someone said "I hope you get raped" or "Kill yourself" those are completely different because the intent of the statement is to offend you. They are meant to hurt you.

I agree with your bit about insulting others but you cannot tell someone what they can and cannot joke about. All you can do is laugh/joke along or ignore it.

This is the internet. You're just giving them ideas if they didn't have them already and feeding those who already have these ideas. I agree with you, don't get me wrong. This is a sad generation because we get our pride and esteem from the dropping of other's esteem because we talked about their mother and told them to kill themselves. Again, this is a sad generation. So this post won't do much.

While it should be common knowledge, or you'd think people would have some common courtesy about topics like this. But like others have said this is the internet. with the internet there is that animosity so people think its funny to act like that. Im sure most people dont mean it, but its the joy of railing someone up. Plus put into account that i would suspect majority of those people who do that are generally kids, or someone who think that their actions doesnt have consequences. This is why if you see when people come here to complain about their ban/chat restrictions, they usually all fall for the "i didnt know it" excuse as if you need to tell someone that telling others to kill themselves, or wishing cancer on them is a no-no. All in all though there is nothing we as a community can do. If we see them in our games the best we can do is report them afterwards. Then its up to the people who work for Riot and look through those reports to see if they should be punished. Most cases seems to point that they do punish those who break those rules, but people will always do it so they will always be here!

Technically it doesn't need to be said and therefore this post is useless, but I agree on every point. Religious "racism" (Religism?) can be added to the list. Still not sure why atheist people have the feeling that they have to tell me God isn't real when all I did was walk by wearing a cross under my shirt. People need to just keep to themselves ._.

Somebody brought up South Park as an example in that other thread... which is actually a great example, because people that watch South Park do so intentionally. South Park is watched by people that want to watch South Park; in fact most likely for it's humor.

Whereas people play LoL to play LoL. That's the common denominator. Everything beyond that has to be, to some extent, "socially acceptable behaviour". A vague term admittedly, but in reality pretty much everybody knows what kind of jokes fall into that vague definition and which do not.

You're right. Some things should not be joked about. But the internet and the anonymity it provides makes saying stupid things easier. We have the same situations play out in the real world sometimes. The difference is that there is a lot more reaction to stupid comments and the fear of backlash is more prominent.

I get what you're saying. I don't believe people should be rude to each other, but I do believe that when a private company isn't involved in the situation, what many refer to as "hate speech" must not be criminalized. You said nothing about that, but I just wanted to remind everyone. I hate how people can't see that just because you shouldn't doesn't mean it should not be allowed period. It shouldn't be allowed in LoL because Riot's a private company, so they are capable of limiting your speech, but in the public and stuff, freedom of speech may very well be the most important right we have.

TL;DR: Freedom of speech is imperative, but in a game, it can be limited. Don't be an asshole, and if you are, don't be surprised if you receive consequences. But, whatever you do, never get the idea that you're entitled to live a life in which no one hurts you're feelings. You're not. Kindness is a virtue, but so is common sense.
