Deaf to the Truth : The Real Reason League of Legends is More Toxic Than CS:GO

Hello everyone. It has come to my attention after playing both of these games and sharing my experiences with others who have played them that League of Legends has a more toxic community than CS:GO. I am unhappy to report that in virtually every League of Legends ranked game, the members of the losing team will fight among themselves, especially by blaming one another for the loss and insulting one another. It is also common to see players encouraging each other to surrender and giving up long before the game ends. By contrast, surrendering in CS:GO is extremely rare in competitive mode and there is rarely any toxicity, even on losing teams - more often, there is either silence or people will say "good try".

As a former girl gamer, I believe the reason for this difference between these two games (which share much of the same player base, amazingly!) to be the medium of communication. In League of Legends, players communicate via text chat, while in CS:GO, there is a choice between text and voice, with voice being preferred. I think this is significant because when you hear peoples' voices, it humanizes them and makes it harder to insult them over a video game. If someone does insult someone else, they have to actually hear how their words sound coming out of their mouth, and then they have to contend with being ostracized by their teammates, which is more noticeable over voice chat than text chat. The combination shuts them down and discourages them from being toxic in the future. Even in CS:GO I notice that people are braver when it comes to typing nasty messages rather than saying them out loud, so most negativity is found in the chat box.

What do you think? Am I on to something or is the real reason that League is more toxic something else? Please share your thoughts in the poll and the comments section. Thank you.

1). You call yourself a "gamer girl" you get no credits from me, if you can't acknowledge that you're simply just a gamer. I don't even know what was the need to mention that, and "formerly" lol.. you retired from being a "gamer girl" or something?

2). Apples to oranges. Completely different genres of games. Plus, in CSGO you can easily come back since it's all skill based, so flaming is going to be very little. But in League, skill is a factor, but winning is heavily swayed by how far ahead is the enemy team.

Surrendering is less likely to happen because you can't even surrender unless someone on your team leaves. I had an AFK a few times and we couldn't even end the game early

Voice chat doesn't make people more sympathetic. Just look to Xbox Live for Call of Duty.

League is more toxic because there are just simply more players. LoL is free to play, meaning there is little to no consequence to being a troll other than your account being banned. If it's an account with no skins or no ranked play, it's a slap on the wrist since you can just make another one. Compare paying 5 bucks per account that gets banned vs. nothing. Not to mention, VAC bans are tied to your Steam account, meaning it won't let you play in other games that use VAC as well.

If you get banned in CSGO you lose whatever amount of money you spent to get that game. A paywall is still a deterrent, even if it is a small one. Also keep in mind that "The Overwatch" is a system like Tribunal where players judge others on whether they should be banned or not. The difference is that there is full gameplay of the match to spectate, so usually it's pretty obvious if someone is trolling or cheating as well.

Also, "former girl gamer"? Really?

Having never played CS:GO I'd have to take your word for it. I have played plenty of other shooters however full of players (usually young ones) who throw around racial slurs, homophobic insults and just generally act like complete jerks. You may, however, be onto something. The people who seem most likely to flame people without feeling ashamed for it are the young and immature ones. Many of them however would be IMMEDIATELY disregarded because they would be obviously, well, kids. When some little kid starts screaming at you to "git gud" you don't feel bad, you laugh at him for being immature. Some would be self-conscious about being outed as kids and losing respect in the first place.

Of course, it would lead to a ton more trolling. I fondly remember playing shooters with my friends and using the voice chat ENTIRELY to practice singing the most hilariously or awful R&B songs you'd ever heard. People would use soundboards or memes or what have you... trolls will still be trolls. There may be less people willing to scream "kill yourself bronzie, I hope you get cancer and die" though. It might merit a trial run.

CS:GO is extremely rare in competitive mode and there is rarely any toxicity, even on losing teams - more often, there is either silence or people will say "good try".

The first time I tried CS:GO I was told to go kill myself 5 times within 3 minutes. Then the next que I joined I was told by 3 different people that the wold would be better off without me. That was my experience, but I just don't want to pick up the game after that. I like watching the CSGO tournaments on twitch but other than that I stay away from the game.

Personally I haven't experienced much toxicisity in League especially over the last 2 ish months. But again, that's my experience.
