Tips to improve the ban/reform system

Dear Riot Boards

A few days ago I got permabanned for abusive chat behaviour, this included: stfu, cya nerd, malding, fuming with the comment, chat should only be used for strategical purposes. Everyone who plays this game, knows this isn't the case for 95% of chat messages sent. I know I got "warnings" for my chat behaviour which consist out of punishments. So me believing that I got robbed of my account took my frustrations to riot support and after a long conversation I sent a few tips to which I got the response that it were good tips but that they can't do anything, so here are the tips I submitted:

STOP PERMABANNING FOR CHAT: you tell to me I just need to mute the people talking smack to me and report them after the game, well why don’t the people just not mute me when I type? I enjoy talking smack which is why I don’t just mute people, I also don’t care about words in a game, they don’t offend they’re often just a bit annoying. Also someone who just types smack shouldn’t get permbanned, just take away their ability to chat and voila, problem solved. You’re punishing people who chat evenly hard as people who cheat or int which is bullshit, you don’t see a petty theft getting the same punishment as a homicide, right? Here are some suggestions on better ways to punish chat abusers: o Keep 2 week banning them: In csgo the only way to get permabanned is by cheating, for all other behaviour you get 2 week bans which allows you time to think, if you permaban someone, they just make a new account and don’t change their behaviour, they just get more and more angry with the system that only punishes chat and not trolling, inting, etc. o Take away the ability to chat forever: I already asked for this before so here it is again, if someone continues to not use chat for the right purpose, which apparently is to “discuss stratetegy” than just take away their ability to chat, it’s simple. (By the way, 90+% of the community doesn’t use chat for strategy all the time so yeah, maybe play the game, it might give you some insight. o Have a proper reform program: I don’t know what this in-client reform card is but it doesn’t exist, it does nothing. Guide a player to better path instead of just punishing them. There is no visible way to see if you’re getting better or even if you’re at risk, it goes from nothing to boom, chat restriction. I know you think this chat restriction thing is a warning but it isn’t, it’s already a punishment for MUTABLE FUNCTION.

Make a clear set of bannable words: your entire system is purely subjective, by the chat logs you show me I see I’m getting reported by players who START with dogshit behaviour by inting and being an overall bitch, and when we have an exchange of words they can’t handle it and report me. You see how fucking stupid this is? I don’t know if you know the league community but letting them decide on which words are bannable by reports, is just dumb. You also don’t look at the context, which is a very big flaw in the entire system. Why you may ask? Let me give u an over-exagerrated: if someone starts with beating and raping your wife and you push him away, and then he reports you for assault, isn’t that stupid? It’s important to look at the context of things. People who commit murder legit get a less long sentence than people who write in a chat in a VIDEO GAME. At least after a year or a few years unban the chat banned account so people don’t lose thousands of euros on skins. (I get that this point isn't formulated perfectly but I hope you get the point.) I hope this catches the eye of devs and I hope other players can find themselves in this. Don't be afraid to give some feedback. Thanks for your time and have a nice day Sincerely Pröper

  • Making a list of bannable words is actually not a great idea. People will toe the line and find ways around it and then go "It wasnt on the list!!!"
  • Muting allows a player to take themselves out of a situation. Most people don't use it unless there already is a situation. It's not needed if there isn't a situation. Easy solution? Don't be a jerk, don't make a situation.
  • Permanent chat bans are not the answer. Riot has tried them. They found players with permanent chat bans are more likely to resort to other ways to grief, usually through gameplay.
  • You can talk smack, but you need to know the line. If you have been restricted before, then you found the line. If you are unsure where the line is, err on the side of caution.
  • Cheating and legitimate intentional feeding are actually escalated to 14 day bans. Chat infractions that don't involve hate speech or the like are given two extra steps before the 14 day ban (10 game restriction and a 25 game restriction).
  • Here's your path to reform: Don't be a jerk. Don't harass players. If you are "smack talking" them and they don't respond, don't keep going. Don't "smack talk" your teammates except possibly if they are premade. Don't call for reports. Don't swear at teammates. Don't rank, KDA, or champion shame them.
  • Context doesn't matter. YOU are in charge of your actions. No one is forcing you to type. You are making a conscious decision to do so. Take respectability for your own behavior. You know what the funny thing about your example is? You don't need to defend yourself in this situation. You don't. There is nothing you can do through chat to change the situation. Remove yourself from it, report at the end of the game (to the police AKA Riot), and move on.

You are the 4th person to make this post in the last 6 hours. It's not going to happen. Follow the rules.

people who commit murder legit get executed in some places than people who write in a chat in a video game.

Uh, but obviously that didn't work the first time? You know the saying: He who repeats something expecting a different outcome is a _______......

o Take away the ability to chat forever: I already asked for this before so here it is again, if someone continues to not use chat for the right purpose, which apparently is to “discuss stratetegy” than just take away their ability to chat, it’s simple. (By the way, 90+% of the community doesn’t use chat for strategy all the time so yeah, maybe play the game, it might give you some insight.

And they tried this - which resulted in those players "soft inting" which is harder to detect and confirm. TLDR, this increased toxicity more.

o Have a proper reform program: I don’t know what this in-client reform card is but it doesn’t exist, it does nothing. Guide a player to better path instead of just punishing them. There is no visible way to see if you’re getting better or even if you’re at risk, it goes from nothing to boom, chat restriction. You shouldn't need a guide. It's not hard at all to simply not be an asshole to others. It's your parents job to teach you this, not Riot.

Smack talking: [Ashe misses a point blank ult on stationary target]: Nice shot, deadeye.

Not smack talking (aka harassment): [Ashe misses a point blank ult on stationary target]: Ashe, you fucking suck

The first pokes fun, and can be laughed off. The second is really just to enrage them, and no place in the game.

Id say chat is used toxicly only 10% of the time, not 95%. Note that both of us are just making up a percentage that doesnt reflect reality. Also LOL comparing an account for a video game being banned to going to prison for murder.
