On Lobby Hijacking

Look, I originally intended on posting this to the League of Legends subreddit, but they have a rule against specifically addressing Riot, and this is definitely addressed at Riot Games--Mostly.

When I queue up to play a game in ranked, I don't really have a lot of expectations. They are as follows:

  1. I will be given a role. It will be either top or ADC, my main roles, or I will be autofilled.
  2. If I am autofilled, I expect not to be autofilled for a few games. I will play a game as autofill to the best of my ability or dodge in order to avoid autofill. The reason I won't just hijack the lobby is because I'm afraid of Riot banning me for my foul deeds.
  3. My teammates will understand that this is the case, and have queued up understanding these rules.

In short: There's a bit of an unspoken social contract here between me and my soon-to-be teammates. If I am autofilled, I'll still try to play the game even though I won't be the best, and I expect the same of them. If I don't play by the rules, Riot will ban me and I won't be allowed to play any more. This is the only way for the autofill system as it is to function. If the rule of autofill is not followed, then the system does not function. If even a small fraction of players consistently refused to follow the rules of autofill, then ranked would collapse and become unplayable.

The issue I'm posting about here is that although it is rare, you'll still come across players who hijack the lobby. In theory, Riot has made statements before that this behavior is bannable. However, this isn't really made clear to players. What exactly is there to stop me, when I join a lobby, from attempting to hijack it and force the other players into giving me my role? I have effectively broken the social contract expected of me, but the other players are now suddenly captives. Their options are as follows:

  1. Give me what I want and play a role they don't want to
  2. Refuse to give me what I want and either dodge, giving them a timer and punishing them for refusing to allow me to ruin their game, or they can just play with me and report me after.

This is basically completely unacceptable. By the time there's an opportunity for any "justice" to be done, the game is over, I've lost my LP, and the player has probably not even received a clear message that what they did was wrong. As a matter of fact, there isn't even a relevant report category that can be used to specifically filter and target behavior like this.

There's multiple solutions to this, but autofill absolutely cannot function as a system to make games quicker to play if it is not enforced. By the looks of the current system, autofill is either not being enforced or not being enforced harshly enough. It needs to be made absolutely clear that autofill is not optional or a suggestion, and Riot cannot tolerate players refusing to abide by the autofill system. It ruins games and negatively affects overall ranking, and can make players feel as though they're totally wasting their time.

Some detailed suggestions to fix this issue:

  • Adopt a no tolerance policy on lobby hijacking and role stealing. Players found to attempt role hijacking or successfully do it in a game should be banned permanently with no leniency whatsoever. Again: This behavior is on the same level as intentionally feeding, and cannot be tolerated if you want a competitive game.
  • Implement a report-in-lobby function. Potential for abuse, but there's ways around this--For example, reporting in lobby could only have an impact if someone is consistently reported and found via an independent Riot investigation that their behavior is legitimately toxic. Players that meet both thresholds should be rare, meaning that there are few false positives.
  • A specific report category should be added in the post-game screen that specifically targets this behavior, and searches pregame chat, role pick, summoner spells, and position on the map throughout the game (Tools we've seen that Riot has access to) to determine if the player was legitimately role-stealing.
  • Riot needs to clearly communicate with the community that this behavior is not accepted, and explain how this issue is going to be addressed in a concrete way that impacts players positively.

I appreciate the read, and a red post would definitely go a long way in restoring some faith and letting us know that you guys are paying attention.

Yet another highly well written post with excellent ideas that simply goes unnoticed, especially by Riot.

Kind of an extreme idea, but having like an SoS button in the lobby for thst kind of behavior would be interesting. It would require a vote from all 4 of the other players directed at a specific player that would force them to dodge and set them on a timer. Could be abused a little especially by 4 man's... but that's about all I can think of that would work really well.

Well they don't enforce inting, trolling, or flaming/verbal abuse anyways unless it's laced with expletives and homophobic/racial language, otherwise instant feedback won't catch it. Gotta love it when they stop caring about player behavior, huh?

Have you read the recent Ask Riot?

They are working on some behavioral features, but we have no idea what it is about yet.

Not abusable if it is well formed.

  1. if you ban someone it counts as a queue dodge. you get a short low prio queue for 1 game and have to wait to get into your next game. you don't immediately lose any LP though.

  2. now that we can report people pre game there is at least an avenue for banning this kind of behaviour.

  3. players who use this feature a lot get their reports reviewed, and if enough of their reports are false they lose a chunk of LP for falsely reporting people (roughly the amount of LP that would be lost for a number of queue dodges equivalent to their false reports) and they get a longer low prio queue for a number of games.

The immediate low prio queue acts as a deterrent for reporting over trivial disagreements and requires some time commitment in order to report someone. The longer low prio queues and LP loss acts as a deterrent for people who falsely report to try to get out of games. Don't agree with a teammates pick for their role? Too bad that's a false report low prio queue and loss of LP for you. Don't like how champ select turned out/got counterpicked? Dodge and lose the standard 3LP. Someone's holding champ select hostage? Report them without wasting 30 min of your time in game.

And as is the case with the current report system one report carries as much weight as 9 so premades can't abuse this. Just a reminder that in the current system getting reported 9 times in one game carries exactly the same weight as getting reported once in that game.

That feel when Google Now Launcher redirects me to that post 14 hours after its creation because it is so good.

Another possible solution that you did not mention was a system that enables people to swap positions. Most people don't realize they can ask if they can swap for a more favorable position. 9/10 times I get autofilled I asked to swap and somehow I get a position I'm comfortable with so if we had something like this in place it would solve a lot of problems.

They know full well about this, and are experimenting with different ideas, currently they're looking at a, give a reason for the dodge, so you don't get punished, they know this, you aren't telling them about anything new, for the options you gave:

  1. They currently have no way to tell if what you're saying is true, or what really happened, or who was doing what in champ select.
  2. It would take a long time to implement this, and the beta client is, again, still in beta, so they have much bigger things to worry about then trolls.
  3. This counts as: A. Griefing, Intentional Feeding. B. Griefing, Assisting the enemy team.
  4. The people who do this, know full well that it is wrong, they simply don't care and they won't regardless of clarity.

So please, be patient with Riot, they know about the issue, and they're trying to fix it, they just need time, and stop making these posts, it's a known issue, and one person isn't going to come up with any new ideas for this by themselves, that the teams of people at Riot are trying to solve, I'm sorry, but it's the truth.

The only thing I disagree with in this post is that it's rare, this seems to be fairly common occurrence in gold-plat, people refuse to play non main roles even when autofilled.

GigaPube2/5/2017, 5:20:03 PM1 votes

what a gem of a post. glad i still come here despite it being filled with cringey garbage and people openly making new accounts and upvoting their own posts and downvoting anyone who disagrees. eventually, this post really should go to reddit, it doesnt need to be addressed to riot, it can just be suggestions for change in general. if the right people are on at the right time, it will get upvoted appropriately and garner the attention it truly deserves on a more appropriate and popular forum, where its not the same circlejerk posting weeb gifs and attention whoring sensationalist bullshit

I never have this issue, myself (since my main roles are Jungle and Support), but I see it happen very often, and it's just unacceptable. The only circumstances under which it should me acceptable to take a role other than what you were given are as follows:

-You ask a teammate to switch roles, and they agree (+1 teamwork) -A teammate offers the role to someone they see complaining about being autofilled (+4 teamwork)

If it happens in malicious context, then it needs to be a bannable offense.

Riot very recently stated that they are not concerned enough with lobby highjacking right now to do anything about it. Pretty stupid imo

Phazetic2/6/2017, 3:56:45 AM1 votes

I wish Riot could have some live game supports that can come in and moderate games. Just inow ing that someone with the power to ban you from your game would surely deter some people's toxic behavior.

Only problem is that its so out of control right now that you couldnt get enouph qualified people to moderate the games

Bump so our Rito overlords will hopefully address this issue.

yeah no joke. im in bronze, not even going to pretend like i am good. but seriously, losing lp because someone ints, or just refuses to help so theycan ruin a game but not get hit with inting, is frustrating. it happends way too often for me to believe that this is something riot has as a priority.

Nope, and because of this. The punishment is too harsh for the action.

It might be the same as intentionally feeding, but intentionally feeding once doesnt get you permabanned. At most its 2 weeks. A record of intentionally feeding might warrant a permaban, but behavior like this doesnt warrant a zero-tolerance policy with no leniency.

And there are always gray areas - what does it mean to "hijack" a lobby? What if someone locked a Mid, stated, "Oh crap - I chose a midlaner casue I was mid in my last queue. Can I mid?" What if they said, "I'm only good at Yasuo mid. You can op.gg me if you want - I end up feeding whenever I dont play Yasuo mid." Is that hijacking? The clear-cut cases of "Mid or Feed" are easy, but its difficult to determine what constitutes hijacking. Some people will say this is hijacking - others wont. Its dangerous to have this much varying opinion on something you want to have a zero-tolerance policy and an instant permaban on first offense.

I just had to dodge one of my games because one of my allies in lobby whined "why riot why?" (he had teleport and got autofilled into support).

He didn't ask for any swaps, so I figured it was as typical "whine in channel, play your best" sort of lobbies. I intended "wukong" top and when it was his turn to pick, he picked "wukong" support. It is unfortunate because I can't report this guy in lobby nor am I willing to risk going into a game just for a chance to report this guy.

It was a little late to do any swapping as he said nothing early enough for any of us to consider swapping. Never mind the fact that it is a privilege to be able to swap with someone, not a right. Consequently, I just dodged to avoid the mayhem that would most likely ensue. I suppose this is what the queue dodges are for, but I agree that many games are ruined from the start. The perpetrators of such heinous actions cannot be punished for this actions nor reported in any meaningful way.

Easily solvable. Ban the bitches that do it.
