Why doesn't Riot invest in an in-game Player Moderator System?

I have been playing League of Legends since Season 1. Through this time I have experienced all audiences of toxicity. From the early leveling to the higher echelons on Diamond it exists and continues to ruin the gaming experience for other players.

I commend Riot's rigorous efforts when it comes to combating toxic behavior, and I have absolutely seen a decline in recent years. However, I still observe toxic and unsportsmanlike behavior on a daily basis. Players that act in this way have a strong belief that their habitual behavior will continue to go unpunished because it has gone unpunished for so long.

I wonder why Riot does not invest in a Player Moderator System like other small companies have? Players who are not employed under Riot Games are offered a position of authority if their behavior has proven to be positive for an extended period of time. These player moderators are given a visible badge that makes other members of the community more inclined to play respectfully and behave.

I would like to reiterate that this question is not at all rhetorical, and I am perfectly open to the idea that this system would be horrible and ineffective for whatever reason. I would assume that some of this reasoning comes from the various moral arguments that contend that every player should have (and believe to have) an equal level of responsibility over reducing the level of toxicity on League of Legends. This, or that there is a greater level of confidence in the current system.

Riot isn't a "small" company. The scope of what you're suggesting would be enormous.

Ulanopo is correct: League is far from a small game, and Riot is far from a small company. Back in 2013 League could claim 5 million concurrent players, and that number has grown.

For reference, that's 500,000 concurrent games, or, on average, about 250,000 hours of game time...per half hour. It's simply impossible for a human moderator team to even hope to keep up.

I'm pretty sure if they did another type of tribunal it would be like this. But they would need to make it not for everyone. Mainly because of the trouble of the last tribunal, too many people would abuse the system especially when there is an incentive. Then the problem will lie on who gets in. If you randomly accept people what will happen if they stop looking up cases? Does it need to be a daily thing one must do?

When I did the tribunal when it was available I maybe went on it every weekend, then maybe once a month, then just stopped all together. There needs to be a reason to keep on using it

Several reason could be given:

  1. Players could use it as a blackmail opportunity(Mid or ban).
  2. The system would just make it so that players would behave in games where somebody was flaring their banner.
  • This is diffrent then in other games because the actual games we play have a really low amount of players in them compared to games like wow. In a league match there are 10 players while in a wow server the moderator would come into contact with thousands of players. For this reason moderators are way more powerful in open world mmorpg.
  1. you have the chance to cause the players that wear that banner to make wrong decisions based on their moods. The really bad 4/8/0 jax might be a inter in their eyes, but he might just have a bad game.

If this system is implemented well it could work, but I would change it to:

  • give a standardized monthly reward(hextec chest or something)
  • hide that they are actually moderators. and even then you would still have to deal with the 3 problems I pointed out above.

So the old tribunal for more flare?

How about we just modify the block list for non- ranked games.

You block someone then you can't be matched with them. No need to review the report. No extra crap to wade through. The more people who block someone the less normal/ ARAM games they get thus encouraging better behavior or longer que times.

Ranked would still be open season but those would be easier to monitor than all games.

Win/win You as a player no longer have to deal with their crap, immediate impact on terds and less work for riot....
