We need some better sort of moderation for the Boards

So, I'm sure many of you are aware of the toxicity that goes around on the Forums. If that's not the case, you've probably seen it somewhere in the discussion area of many threads.

I figured that we need some kind of moderation system that treats toxic players on the forums like toxic players on League of Legends would be treated. Plain and simple; if you're toxic, consequences are put in place.

I don't know if Riot would use a bot, or have hired moderators. Another idea would to have volunteer moderators that have to go through a survey to be reviewed by a higher-up Riot employee in order to become a volunteer moderator. This would of course imply that the volunteer would get no pay - it would be a bit like the Tribunal system for the Boards.

But, it's just an idea. I think we should do something to lessen the toxicity on the Boards, personally, but I'm sure some of you, if not most, agree with me that toxicity is a serious problem that should be addressed on the Boards.

What we currently have is an outsourced Mod staff called Metaverse. They take their direction from Keyru and Riot staff, but operate mostly on their own unless something strange requiring higher authority comes up. The problem is that the mods are not very visible, don't participate actively in the community, and can be easily manipulated since the subjects they have authority to take independent action on are very limited. In most cases, a post requires several reports before its brought to mod attention, meaning that the report function can also be used to manipulate the mods into taking action provided the person has questionable moral qualities and a slew of smurf accounts.

What I and many others have suggested for several years now is perhaps having community player mods for the boards. There are drawbacks and benefits to this concept as well and many of the aspects of 3rd Party moderation, Riot staff moderation, and Community Member mderation have all been discussed at length, most commonly on GD in various threads over the last few years with an increasing interest in Community Member moderation the last 6 months or so. There are many, many board goers who will engage on this topic and suggest ideas, and my hope is that since we have seen some success with the Arbiter program we might try to implement other forms of Community Member participation. Using the search function will bring up several threads regarding the topic and several more can be found if you choose to cruise around the forum archives. Should this thread attract enough attention I will search up several past discussions among the playerbase and some involving riot staff and link them here.

Moderation of the boards certainly could stand to improve, the problem so far has been that finding a superior solution to what we already have has been difficult as each new idea presents its own unique flaws and advantages. In any case, discussion on this topic is always welcome and is an excellent idea and I will certainly encourage it as I have addressed this topic countless times over the years and the best bet for improving our situation here is to constantly analyze what we like and dislike and what we want from our boards experience.

Thanks for posting this OP, you've done us all a service by bringing this topic up.

So you want:

  1. Censorship of all ideas you disagree with.
  2. Punishment for anyone who hurts your feelings
  3. Hire more staff in order censor more content and/or
  4. Get a core of dedicated volunteers to work for free called The Riot Youth.

Perfect. I have exactly what you are looking for here: https://www.reddit.com/r/leagueoflegends

You typed the word "toxic" enough times to make it lose its purpose.

Lastly, if I wanted this kind of forums to converse, I'd move to North Korea and start talking shit about the regime, they'd treat me more liberally in the concentration camps than you're asking right here.

There are other places you can go converse where your particular moral code is enforced, the internet is infinite.

The boards moderation team does exist, it's just that most of the time no one notices them doing their work. I hit the little "report" button at the lower right of each post and it seems to get taken care of pretty quickly.

Agree with Daen. It feels like the OP is asking for more VISIBLE moderation. Like a moderator locking a topic that violates the rules, noting why it was locked, and leaving it for all to see. Thus, providing visual proof that moderation exists.

I know the moderation exists because I reported a post yesterday that disappeared within a few minutes. Even my reply to it was gone. I no longer need to see it in action to know it's there. Not that I doubted it's existence in the first place. But now it's reaffirmed for me. That's probably what the OP wants too.
