Inside The Culture Of Sexism At Riot Games

This is obvious. Of course they arent perfect people and of course they are hypocrites. Who knows if something with come out of it.

tldr- basically its an account of a lady taht worked at riot games somewhere. they had a culture of saying %%%%%%s, pussies and %%%%%%s. she made a comment abut wanting a fat women character and they were opposed to it. I didnt read after that.

I mean, it's nothing but anecdotal "evidence". If there was hard, concrete proof (IE a video or voice recording), maybe I'd be more inclined to believe it, especially considering it's coming from Kotaku of all places.

Yeah all the people downvoting this, this is actually a real situation and it's been confirmed by SEVERAL rioters, both male and female that women are treated differently a lot of the time at their main office

I mean, you actually follow Kotaku. Like nonironically. I think that says something about the validity you can offer, yet alone them

You didn't read after that? Good man. Hopefully Rito takes this as admission that they need to stop capitulating to the PC crowd because they'll never please them and still be called a ton of ad-homs. Granted, I'm just ranting about this because I'm a salty gay dude that got banned a few months back on grounds of hate speech for dropping an F-bomb on someone. (I respect the abusive behavior charge, but on principle I am idealistically against the concept of enforcing hate-speech law. Throwing an F-bomb at someone is abusive behavior, and it should be absolutely nothing else.)

But enough, I'm going to see how long I can get through this article before I just give up and turn into a blubbering mass of sadness. Amumu

"Lacy made it her mission to hire a woman into a leadership role."

Geeze, it's taken me only one sentence and I'm already seeing hints of what I'd like to call "toxic-feminism". This is kind of like me making it my personal mission to hire another gay dude into a leadership role or maybe another atheist or maybe another vegan, ( I'm actually incredibly super ultra-left wing, I just happen to not be PC on any level) When all of that -which will most certainly affect my job and who I hire- shouldn't at all be put into consideration. If someone gets put into a leadership role it should be based on whether they're the best viable candidate.

"Hiring a woman into a leadership position proved impossible for Lacy, she said, and she left the company in part because of the sexism she’d personally experienced. "

She also continues to make numerous claims of behaviors that I would certainly consider to be sexist, but the problem is they all amount to hearsay and I'm not the most generous to give the claims credibility when the person expressed certain ideas that make me question their honesty. Which to be fair, I'm a skeptical person in general - it's part of what informs my atheism and veganism.

_ "[His] face turned beet red and he had tears in his eyes,” said Lacy. “They just didn’t respect women.” _

This claim I've chosen to highlight because I practically heard alarm bells ringing when I finished reading it. Is it impossible? No, but it seems quite fabricated to me.

"Over the course of several months, Kotaku has spoken to 28 current and former Riot employees, many of whom came forward with stories that echo Lacy’s. Some of those employees spoke on the record; most spoke anonymously because they feared for their future careers in the games industry or they were concerned that League of Legends’ passionate fanbase would retaliate against them for speaking out."

It's kind of funny, because it's actually the same way in numerous corporations that are super ultra PC too. People go anonymous out of fear of backlash from a passionate faction that retaliate against them for speaking out against the status quo. Not that I'm admonishing them against for being anonymous, mind you. Because while I'm a super ultra anti-PC I can admit that someone having a PC mindset will open them to plenty of harassment as well. My point being, you'll see it on both sides.

_“We aggressively enforce a zero tolerance policy on discrimination, harassment, and general toxicity. It is incredibly important that our leaders embody this commitment, and reinforce this expectation across their teams.” _

Laaaaaaaaaaaaame.

Both male and female sources have described seeing unsolicited and unwelcome pictures of male genitalia from bosses or colleagues. One woman saw an e-mail thread about what it would be like to “penetrate her,” in which a colleague added that she’d be a good target to sleep with and not call again.

So, these sources describe seeing unsolicited and unwelcome pictures of male genitalia and we have a case of a woman seeing an e-mail thread. Okay, Sounds like some pretty good evidence, all right. Where is it? Hmm? No screenshot of this e-mail thread? No verification that these pictures exist in the context they were sent or even flat out the pictures? Well, why not? Because if you notice, Kotaku makes no mention of any of these things being actually material.

Afterwards, the article just continues with more hearsay.

"It’s not unusual for a tech or gaming company to struggle with sexism and lack of diversity. In recent years, some studios have tried to reckon with that reality, taking steps to hire more women and making games that showcase more diverse characters."

So having discriminatory hiring practices will fix discrimination? How does it help the problem of discrimination by giving a woman a job for being a woman over a potential male employee? As for diverse characters, this too I have a problem with because it undermines video games as an art form and makes it more into a product that has to meet certain check boxes. The artist should decide whether their art _needs _diversity because trying to force diversity limits artistic expression. Art should come from within and so should diversity in art - not out of some demand for diversity. Sometimes diversity - at least when it's out of a demanded obligation- actually hurts the story because instead of throwing in ingredients that are essential and that the artist actually connects with they start throwing in things just to appease and pander to people. Again, that turns art more into a product. Art shouldn't have to be diverse and it shouldn't have to be inclusive, it should all be up to the artist.

_It doesn't add anything for a game to have a gay character just for the sake of having a gay dude. It shouldn't start with "Ugh, I need to put a gay dude in my game!" but instead "God, what do I do with this character? Hmm, you know, I think this guy'll be gay. Outrageous." _

_Among behemoth tech companies, there’s a commonly-held belief in the idea of meritocracy. That’s the notion that the most talented and deserving employees will rise through the ranks into leadership positions. In theory, it’s a no-brainer goal for any workplace. In reality, it doesn’t seem to materialize at companies like Riot. The problem of hiring, promoting and retaining women at tech companies is well-documented, and it’s a problem that makes any true “meritocracy” difficult to attain at these workplaces. At Silicon Valley-based companies like Google and Apple, only a quarter of “professional” jobs—like engineers, designers and analysts—were held by women in 2016, _

And I bet if I looked up how many women apply for these jobs versus men I'd probably see that more men do.

"Preferencing Riot’s definition of “core” gamers during hiring means drawing in employees from a larger pool of men than women. Avid players of MOBAs (multiplayer online battle arenas, a genre encompassing popular games including League of Legends and Dota 2) and first-person shooter fans are typically men. Game data company Quantic Foundry surveyed over 270,000 gamers worldwide between July 2015 and January 2017 on what game titles they enjoy playing and reported that only 10% of gamers who play MOBAs are female. For first-person shooters, that number is 7%. Without examining why these gaming genres are heavily male, Riot’s apparent job candidate expectations can create a very stratified workplace, where women, who are less likely to be megafans of these games, are considered lesser Rioters because of the way they grew up. "

Okay, the "Because they grew up" is a gigantic humongous straw-man. Seems like a pretty solid justification to me. Rito hires more men because it's mostly men that play MOBAS. Doesn't it stand to reason that a competitive game like League of Legends what's desired is people who play it? It's a competitive game with a lot of complexity and over hundreds of characters - that's not something you leave in the hands of someone who doesn't play MOBAS. And I mean, even SJWS like Jim Sterling to some degree can kind of attest that the game industry isn't better for being run by people who don't play video games. That's how you get invasive business practices that actually ruin the game or make it worse and fundamentally change how it's designed.

After this there's numerous accounts, and one which kind of annoyed me:

"The e-mailer added that the problem gets deeper when “our hiring panels are, just by the sheer result of the ratio of men to women at Riot, mostly straight/white/male.”

They say that as if it's a bad thing as opposed to the most obvious statistical outcome you could expect. What?! STRAIGHT WHITE MEN?! Straight, the dominant sexuality in the world. White, the dominant skin colour in the U.S.A. and Male, the dominant gender of people who play MOBAS. THEY END UP BEING THE DOMINANT GROUP THAT'S HIRED?! WUH?!

Aaand I accidentally closed the article and I don't wanna go looking through it again sooo. Whomp Whomp. Guess that's the end.

The article never mentions wanting a fat woman character.

I read the whole thing, and it seemed reported fairly to me. People she contacted who said, "I didn't see this" were quoted as saying that. Having seen this kind of sexism in several video game companies, I'm just not surprised. The current one I work at doesn't seem to have this issue so much, so I'm glad about that.

If they do end up making a bigger female character. I'm shipping her with Gragas . They'll be my new Mike and Molly. I know he's not a viking. But, he kinda looks like one. So I'll be having fun with my viking couple who drink til they pass out.
