Racial Slurs and my Test Results
Hello Riot Behavior Team,
Just to satisfy my curiosity, I would like some comment on my test results regarding the Riot penalty system. If you cannot share some of this information on the forum, please reach me at the email address attached to this account: I will not publish or share any information, if sent as an email response, with anyone. If I am permitted to cite these responses, then it would be a fantastic start for a full study of player punishment systems in online games, which I would try to have published in a peer reviewed journal.
I have done tests on three different accounts now each designated with a different slur ("%%%%%" later transformed to "%%%%%%%%%%%", "zipper head", and most recently the N word). My testing methodology was saying the word at:
- the start or end of the game
- any point which may be particularly funny (very rare occurrence)
The only account to ever receive a penalty was the one that tested the N word (banned in 5-6 games). The other accounts have not received any penalty after 20+ games. If possible, please comment on why only the one slur received punishment.
Additionally, I am curious if the language filter has any impact in the punishment system. In my opinion, the system should work like the following:
- If a player has their language filter on, then a stated slur should have no relevance to them if said blatantly (eg. said with no relevant context, like right at the start / end of the game).
- If a player has their language filter off, they have opted in for slurs and other excluded words. This player should be okay with any slurs that are said in jest and as blatant.
- And just so it is here. No player should tolerate any flame, slurs, or negativity directed at them.
Also, I am wondering why/how people flame things that are much worse consistently and see no consequences? (especially at high MMR where I would see the same player flame game after game and receive no consequence for weeks on end). Are fewer punishments given to high MMR / old accounts, or is there another reason that these individuals do not receive punishments?
Furthermore, could you comment on the severity of bans issued? I am particularly curious about the severity of the ban given to the account with summoner name "Dısconnected" (there is a undotted i). Image of login screen: https://imgur.com/3iDikuR ; the chat log is from Game 2895849509. I expected a chat restriction (do these still exist?) or a light punishment or warning.
Also if you could, please provide me with a list of the standard punishments that Riot issues(eg. 5 game chat restriction, 14 day suspension, etc.).
Edit: Now that I noticed it on the login ticket, I recommend having more templates geared toward particular bans. For the case of my "Dısconnected" account it only has 4 lines of text from the listed game and has the comment "win without going aggro in chat." That's not quite the advice that account should be receiving.
Thank you,
Simon Wong
