Does reporting people actually work?

I have had a series of toxic games today. My last game was exceptionally bad. I was playing Lux mid against Vel-koz and was doing fine I even killed him first. After I killed him he went bot from base and killed the adc and supp. They then flamed me non stop because I didn't say SS. I pinged that he wasn't in lane but they didn't care. Vel-koz got fed then and the flaming just got worse. I only died a few times but he finished the game on something like 14kills. Any spell I missed I was flamed for and anytime I tried to explain things I was just told to stfu and that I was a retard. I finished the game something like 4-3-5 so I wasn't even feeding. {Client is down atm so I'm not 100% on score)

I am only playing league about a year and a half and I am definitely nothing special but the amount of toxic players is insane. And it isn't even ranked its just normal summoners rift. The ADC and Supp flamed me every 5minutes and there was a team fight bot and I went to join and got crossed by Trundle in jgl. I escaped him but then of course got flamed from EVERYONE on my team for not being in the team fight and they were asking why I was fighting Trundle. I was running from Trundle as obviously I knew he would wreck me and when I explained they flamed and called me retarted again and that I didn't deserve my mastery. (Im LVL 6 Lux) When I asked the enemy team to report them for flame they then told the enemy team to report me. Its so annoying that people can talk like this in games and no matter how many times I report these people I never hear anything about it. Does anything happen to these ppl?

I am a firm believer that flaming doesn't help at all and It usually makes the game go worse.

any chance they could ban the people telling you to kill yourself... that's a bit much over a game...

Thanks for the quick reply's guys. You make a good point about asking other players to report these ppl too. I never really thought about it like that. I wont do that anymore. I could turn off my chat but then I feel like that will put my team and I at a disadvantage as we can't then communicate other than pings. I just wanted to know how the whole ban system worked really so thanks for clearing it up for me.

Depends on which type of "toxicity".

Chat- Absolutely

Trolling- No

Feeding- Sometimes

Also, the only time you will ever know if someone you reported was punished is if your report triggered the review. If they play another game afterwards and get reported before being punished, you won't know of it.

Strange I'd say that -I- was the Velkoz because I had a game similar to the one you described about an hour ago. But apparently you're on EUW while I'm on NA? (According to the account this is posted from at least) Just a coincidence, I guess.

Either way, I'd recommend turning off all-chat for solo queue purposes and muting allies if you anticipate problems. They're randos, they shouldn't have that much power over you. You're never going to see them again, why does their opinion matter? (By that logic why listen to me then, w/e, just trying to help)

If it makes you feel any better, there's weeks where I play numerous league games in a row. During those weeks, every time I log back in, I receive one of those "Thanks for your report! X has been punished!" pop-ups. Based on that alone, I would say they work.

It works as long as you are in a group of 3 or more people who bully one person to the point where they have no choice but to lash out at you. Then you all 3 report and you instantly get them banned. If you are by yourself, no... reports do not work.

My friend was perma for toxicity on an account he had for years and put a lot of money into. So yeah I guess it works just takes three years.

Morality Coach12/14/2016, 7:38:05 PM1 votes

No it doesn't work. Doing riots job for them clicking buttons getting involved will just get you mad.

The only true way to avoid toxics is to improve your ELO to at least high silver. It's unusal to get flamed around 1400 ELO unless you're boosted I've found.

It works, just not as quickly as we would like it to. The extremely toxic people eventually will get banned. Unfortunately, it takes a few ruined games for that to happen.

I can say I have reported extremely toxic players, then after a game or two, I get the message saying they were punished. There have been a few times when I have proof they were banned because I check their match history and they have a "break" from games for a while.

Tbh, this is probably the best Riot can do. People are getting good at "passive trolling" where they afk farm and other such behaviors. Once you try to get to a person's motive and thinking.....its a tough thing to prove sometimes.

Yeah it eventually works, but it doesn't really solve the problem of people being huge assholes like this in game. It's why some people only play bots cause you can't play a normal or ranked without getting games like that where people flame you for no reason. You can get flamed even if you are doing the best in the game and are nice to everyone.. you can still have people blaming you when they go 0/10. Not that score means everything, but the people flaming are usually doing the worst or 2nd worst on the team.

Yes, reporting works, but it won't have much effect if they get banned they can just make a new account, if they get 'punished' they actually don't, they just switch accounts. I don't think that's the sole reason people are such assholes in this game, but it definitely contributes. I really think the number of accounts should be limited. 3 accounts at most.. there's not really any reason to have more than 2, unless you are excessively smurfing or you get banned a lot, you should never need more than 3 accounts..

I really don't quite understand it, I've played tons of online games for over 15 years and never seen people being so negative and annoying that it makes me not even want to play sometimes. I can ignore the guy swearing me out the whole game.. but I can't ignore the '?' ping spam every time I miss a skill shot, or when people use the '!' ping on me when I'm already dead anyways just so they can act like they warned me/ try to say I'm feeding.

The sheer amount of blaming and (unnecessary) ping spam is the most annoying part of this game for me. One example is an ARAM game I had. Fizz was always solo diving without us, then spam pinging '?' all over us every time he died, after the 5th time he says 'thanks team' i said 'Fizz stay with the team plz, wait till we are all alive'. You know what his response is? 'Leona you garbage terrible build kys'. i was the only one building tank and we were almost winning 4v5 despite Fizz constantly soloing. But this Fizz blames us.

Reports definitely work, though it is not the same as it was a couple years ago when players could participate directly in the Tribunal. I have only received anonymous feedback regarding punishment of any of the players I have reported (I only rarely report people), and it was only the one time. Back in the days of the player-run Tribunal, punishment was at the discretion of the community. Now, I am not sure how it works.

Generally, I am rather laconic when playing, using pings to communicate instead of typing. The time it takes to type out something could be better used in trying to win the game (collecting cs, paying attention to the minimap, pinging where you see enemies or their wards, etc.). If somebody is constantly talking trash (even somebody I am laning with; I main the support role), I do not hesitate to mute them through the scoreboard (Tab key).

the answer is maybe. no one knows exactly how it works, but i have heard the reports are nothing but a placebo and the automated system scans the chat and the k/d and takes care of everything automatically.

No.

Love how some think it doesn't work. Meanwhile, i have a screenshot to PROVE reporting works. How so? Because I got the notification that someone I reported was punished.

That is actually the main reason why I try to hold off on muting someone unless it's absolutely necessary. I only mute if it's bother me to the point where I'm worried I might say something back to them. At that point, I would rather not communicate than risk snapping at them.

They have in fact banned people for that. If it's just one instance of "kys" and they don't have prior behavioral punishments, then it might fly under the radar. But there have been many cases where people have posted their chat logs showing that they were banned for telling their teammates or opponents that.

Riot has actually tailored the reporting system to address this problem so it cannot happen anymore. When a group of people queued together issues multiple reports against one player, it "counts" only as a single report, not as multiple reports. Riot set it up specifically so that groups specifically cannot bully players and try to get them banned like that.

dont ask for reports until postgame lobby. otherwise you can be reported for harassment

OnlyYouCanHearMe12/14/2016, 6:10:21 AM1 votes

To answer your title question... yes, reporting people does actually work. You may not see it though, as only the last report that triggers the account for punishment review will receive the pop-up alert saying that the account was punishment. Since the Instant Feedback System was implemented, I have only seen the pop-up one time, and that was only in the last two weeks. But it does work.

With games like this one, I certainly wouldn't blame you for being very frustrated and just annoyed that you don't ever seem to SEE anything happen to them. But if these people are being reported in multiple games (and not just having one bad game where they were in a really bad mood or something completely out of character) they will end up being punished for it. Once an account reaches a certain threshold of reports, they are reviewed for punishment, and if the reports are found to be valid, then the punishment is issued.

The only thing I will say about the game you mentioned... is about asking for reports. There's no reason to ask the enemy team to report them for flaming you. All it takes is one report to flag the game for review. So having the enemy team report them actually doesn't carry any more weight than just having you report them yourself. What it does do, is open you up to being reported for harassment. Because so many people were using the threats of reports to torment other players, it became classified as a type of harassment if done repeatedly during a match, and is actually a reportable offense. Most people don't seem to know that yet though.

I do hope you reported them for the verbal abuse, and for hate-speech. Riot takes a firm stance against the use of mental disabilities as an insult. It may seem very disheartening to not see the pop-up, but if you reported them for this game, and they have acted like this in other games, then they will end up punished for it.
