Toxic Behavior and other things.

Yesterday I decided to try out ranked for the first time and well I most likely won't do that again anytime soon. Simply because of the toxic behavior within the community. However, that got me thinking. Why are so many people in this game toxic? I don't understand the reason behind it asides from maybe wanting to cover up their own insecurities.

Not only that but why do people take this game seriously in the first place? I kind of understand in ranked but even then there's no point? This anger just seems worthless on the long run. I mean I highly doubt that most ranked players believe that they'll become famous or something like that.

I also wonder why there's no option to turn off chat completely? I mean heroes of the storm does it and so do other MOBAS. In fact if there were no ingame chat this toxicity issue would be solved rather quickly in my opinion.

What are your opinions and ideas on the matter? And if you well tend to be toxic I would like to know why.

You are absolutely 100% correct in that assumption :) Don't worry about flamers, they do it because they don't have the strenght to admit they are bad.

I can understand taking the game seriously. It's literally a rule to always try as hard as you can to win. What I don't get is WHY people lack the selfcontrol to not flame other. Taking the game seriously is a bad excuse for flaming others.

I have the exact same wonders, but some people just can't refrain from being toxic I guess?

There is an option to turn off chat completely. Albeit you have to mute everyone individually, but you can.

I always spam my Discord voice link in the lobby. Anyone worth talking to joins, and anyone not worth talking to doesn't. Then I mute players from there on. And I can honestly say that I have not met one "toxic" person in Discord using this method. The toxic players are always the keyboard warriors with nothing better to do, so they spam and flame in game. I've gotten well over 1000 games played now, and statistically speaking, for me to even say that I have not once had a toxic player join my Discord is a testament to itself. Most of the trolls are teenagers or young children with nothing better to do than flame, and be, well, teenagers.

If you're worried about the enemy team you can just turn off All Chat completely. You can find that option in the game settings. You'll find toxicity and bad sportsmanship throughout all of the elos. Get used to it and grow accustomed to muting people, as individuals, or your entire team if you feel it's necessary. I'm an adult ; I don't have time for BS and a bad attitude. I play the game to enjoy myself and have fun.

Removing the chat will not remove toxicity in game. Players will continue feeding, afking, ignoring their teammates, ignoring objectives, and chasing kills. People this game because they are under the impression that it accurately gauges your skill. However, Riot's system continuously places you with players less or more skilled than you to focus 50% win ratios. For example, if you are on a winning streak, the system will place a player with lower MMR than you. This player will mostly likely feed. You will have at least 1-2 feeders in all of your games. It is unavoidable. The only reason to play this game is the champs and the worthless hope of thinking the game will actually improve.

Ranked definitely has a rougher crowd than normals - part of the reason I've stayed away from it. I've heard that it gets better once you get out of the lower elos, but I've also heard that it never changes. Your mileage may vary :P

This was a thing a long time ago - what wound up happening is that people started misbehaving in ways that are a lot harder to ignore, like intentional feeding.

/mute all will do the trick, but I'd suggest that you don't do that every game automatically, as you're kneecapping yourself by doing so.

In concerns of how you probably see more toxic players, it may have to do with the player-base the game surround you with. You typed you started ranked, so you probably played with different players compared to me. So, the point was to type that I do not find many players to be "toxic". It may also have to do with our definition of that word and our own perspectives. Also, it's possible emotions are in the way which clouds judgement and most commonly, make people see other players as toxic.

Why are so many people in this game toxic? I don't understand the reason behind it asides from maybe wanting to cover up their own insecurities.

There are plenty of reasons for their toxicity (no reasons excuse their behaviors, nevertheless). It's not always a simple cause such as trying to "cover their own insecurities". I often see that reasons typed among other areas of discussions, and the USUAL true intention is to patronize those "toxic" people and make the "victims" feel better. Seeing yourself better than others and treating others below you like trash is not a good way to mental/emotional development. It's not always how you solve problems/tensions either. Condescending others is what toxic players do in the first place. Acting/thinking toxic back at those types of players does not make the "victims" truly better.

Not only that but why do people take this game seriously in the first place?

Plenty of reasons as to why people will find reasons to be angry about. The root of the problem is themselves, but that's not the concern. It's not that it's taken seriously only. Time, expectation of other players, goals (to reach the higher ranks), can cause anger.

I also wonder why there's no option to turn off chat completely?

The best you have is /muteall. You type that in the chat to mute everyone, I believe.

I think the option is not available because people would lose POTENTIAL communication. If a player wish to spend time in this game, but wish to not communicate with others, that player has to give a small effort in their fingers, and some effort in their brain to type /muteall. It take effort mentally/emotionally because of several reasons such as pride, tendency to retaliate, or anger.

Personally, I never use the mute function as I do not stress, I do not have hatred toward others, and I mostly type to give information. I wouldn't want players with different perspective from me to have an option that preemptively remove that chat. I think an easy access to that function would make more players unnecessarily removing the chat box.

What are your opinions and ideas on the matter?

I never had a personal problem with toxicity. They never bothered me, I do not bother them verbally. I typed "verbally" since sometime my game-play sucks and it may anger other. My main concern is how the players AROUND me deals with toxicity. In a game with random people, you may have toxicity vs. toxicity. It's not always a simple case of "toxic against a nice person". Not everyone is mentally/emotionally developed, and it shouldn't be expected as such. It's not something Riot can help with unless they have someone to spread the word of wisdom and development that could sway all minds for the better.
