As a french canadian playing on the North America server, I feel judged by other teamates because I dare say a word in french which is irrelevant to the game. I cannot speak with my friend in my own language without being harassed and insulted and being asked to get out of the "american" server. I would like to be able to play this game, communicate with my team in english and french to my friends because I'm not very good in english without being thrown a shitstorm of insults. I think it's time for Riot to punish those who are racists and discriminating others because they are different. It's a shame that in 2017 freedom of speech is a joke and make me feel like I'm playing with the worst community of all time. #We ARE PART OF THIS SERVER

If someone flames you. Report them

Why don't you just use coms to talk to friends in french and type English for the rest?

EDIT: also freedom of speech is the right to say whatever you want without the GOVERNMENT punishing you. Other people have the right to be assholes and riot has the right to ban them for any reason (read TOS).

First of all, it is not racism. Racism refers to race abuse. European, Negroid, Asian e.t.c (what is fun nowadays negroid abuse has privilege in terms of punishment) Idk, I often meet French speaking ppl in NA and never seen players complaining about this. What ppl may not like is flood aka irrelevant chat. Community has always been a problem in LOL, lot's of other topics and complains connected to it. I believe there is a report "Hate Speech" and it may be the right report type you need. Did you try to write the report on this issue ? See if they treat it reportable. If they do I don't find this Topic relevant.

That's not racism; one of the reasons servers exist between different countries is so you get more people that speak the same language (and to fix ping obviously). If you're on NA, you should still try to speak english, even if it's poor english.

If they're assholes after you speak poor english then go nuts and mute/report etc.

If I see any non-english language in chat, I'm always going to tell the person to try and speak english, for the sake of communication. There are also assholes who don't use english to shittalk (cough chinese players) and flame.

I've never seen anyone be racist against French speakers, however, I have seen French premades insulting others in French when they think no one else understands.

Well, sorry to break it to you but up here in Canada we don't have freedom of speech. We have freedom to speak non-controversial, government mandated speech, as rehashed by bill c16.

So essentially freedom of speech IS a joke for anyone not American. Sad for us my friend.

It's the second official language of Canada - Everything in Canada has to have French on it. Whenever they say "This is an NA server" just laugh at them and ask if they've picked up a map lately. Clearly, they missed the second largest country in the world.

I've never seen anyone be racist against French speakers, however, I have seen French premades insulting others in French when they think no one else understands.

Thank god I speak French, never ever go to Quebec if your English. They'll key your car, try to pick fights with you and even verbally insult you. I live in a border town in Ontario and we have special police protocols just to deal with the crime they bring over. I see the worst of it from most drugs entering Ontario from Rouyn.

Quebec's been trying to separate from Canada for years, and the majority hates English people because of it. I apologize for the few that make it rough for the English speakers , but that's just hatred from loosing the war for Canada way back when. Not all of us are bad though.

ehhh cmon , we Muslims are suffering more and many parody names and Riot is doing nothing , even reports doesn't work , I'm relly sick of that Allahu Akbar joke while they don't even know what it means yet they use it as the meaning of bombing ...

I totally agree with that, we should be able to write in french without being insulted and having the typical '' This is the NA server, english only'' message we get if we say a single french word. Not only that but we should be able to have the choice to either but our game in english or in french because it's not everyone in Canada-Quebec that speaks in english.

Sir Ticklesword12/17/2017, 8:43:58 PM2 votes

It is punished. Did you press report? They can't do a thing about it if you didn't send a report. If you did, you will most likely not get a notification unless your report was the one that triggered a punishment. And I don't get what freedom of speech has to do with any of this. They can't be imprisoned for what they say but they aren't exempt from social consequences.

OnlyYouCanHearMe12/17/2017, 8:47:15 PM2 votes

Unfortunately, there are bigoted, racist people everywhere. If they say something to you, ignore them, mute them if you need to, and report them after the match. Riot doesn't force it's players to use any specific language on their servers, and as long as the content of your French isn't toxic, there's nothing wrong with you using it.

Hikageya12/17/2017, 9:16:16 PM2 votes

I heard a lot of "its not racist because its not about color" oh yeah and even if its not racist, why is it less problematic? Its being intolerant Edit: Typo

Doctor Fillgood12/17/2017, 10:12:16 PM2 votes

A) Yes. Community is bad.
B) Do you not have your own server/French speaking server? (not trying to be a dick, actually asking) C) As team mates, speaking in a language where everyone can understand is the most mutually beneficial. Thanks to, as you pointed out, this community, as well as many stereotypes (again, not trying to be a dick) speaking in a language someone doesn't understand while on a team with them could easily mean you're just insulting them or just refusing to work together.

That being said, you're welcome to join me if you ever want, but I would prefer if you speak mostly in English just so I can understand. Feels bad being in a game where I can't understand my team mates.

Warios12/17/2017, 11:02:48 PM2 votes

I can see the issue with communication in game. If you happen to be speaking french, the rest of your team have no idea what strategies you are doing and will put them at a disadvantage to be able to help out. If it is just normal banter between yourselves, they would not know this and feel they are being left out of the "loop" for planning, since they can not understand what is being said. This does not give them the right to be rude to you, but some "kids" might take it the wrong way.

As others have stated there are a number of chat programs available to use, and they are far superior to typed chat, since you do not to pause your playing of the game to use them while typing.

When i see someone speaking french, since i do not speak it well myself [however, my grandmother lived there for quite some time so i know a LITTLE], i say 'parlez vous anglais?' ("Do you speak english", though without the italics it probably ACTUALLY doesnt translate that well), and since "no" is the same in both languages, and Oui is one of the easiest french words to recognize ('yes'), i can usually get an answer.

I don't flame people for their language. If i can recognize the language, i ask if they speak English and if they do not, i simply ignore those messages (I don't mute unless it's really spammy) and move on.

I figure, if i was on a foreign server and i couldnt speak their language well myself it'd be irritating to get flamed for something i was born into, so i don't do that.

Not to be contentious... But being Quebecois is not a race... Soooooo you can't really be racist against them. But as a Canadian myself, who learned to speak french, I still heart you. <3 [sg-ahri-2]

But in all seriousness. I understand the discrimination from some towards others that speak another language primarily. It sucks. But as I've recently found out... Rito is cracking down on toxic players and even those who aren't actually being toxic are being caught up in the IFS.

The problem isn't that you're French.

The problem isn't that you are from a certain country.

The problem people have with premades that speak other languages is that they're so used to having people be jerks in other languages, they just rather not have them at all. Now if they do it, you can just report them, but yes, I do recommend you do voice comms, then chat in English for safe measure. Because you never know how or why people can react to different languages.

So hey, I know how it feels (Native Spanish speaker), so don't feel dismayed by it.
