Proportional Punishment

Before I get downvoted because someone who has not read this post believes that I am complaining about any sort of ban/suspension/etc that I received, allow me to state that I have never been banned/muted/etc.

However, many players do get suspended for minor actions such as flaming or toxicity. Preventing someone from playing the game seems like a gross overreaction when the root of the problem (their ability to communicate in chat) could simply be revoked. While perhaps one could justify banning someone who is overtly racist or prejudiced, does someone who simply angrily types things such as "f*** off" or the acronym for kill yourself (kys) truly deserve a temporary suspension? Take a real world example. Say that you have had a bad day at work and drive over the speed limit. You get pulled over and instead of receiving a ticket, you get two weeks of jail time. Does that seem like a punishment that fits the crime? Insults and crude retorts are a fact of daily life. Yes, sometimes we are punished for them, but these punishments are generally on the lighter end of the spectrum. We do not confine these particular wrongdoers and prevent them from interacting with the outside world. Toxicity should not be tolerated, but neither should excessive punishment.

Riot starts with lesser punishments, then escalates them to more severe restrictions as they continue exhibiting toxic behavior. Riot used to only continue giving out chat restrictions for chat offenses, but people would simply not care and rack up hundreds or thousands of chat restrictions as they continued to be a problem for everyone else even with their limited chat. It just didn't do much for reforming the behavior, so now they escalate to bans.
