Why punish those who AFK, then return to the game?

I just AFK'd for a quick phone call. The call lasted 4 minutes and 4 seconds. I return to the game and we win at 22 minutes.

I get honors from two of my teammates.

At the end game screen it shows I lost LP "due to AFK behaviors"

Obviously I'm pissed but Riot tell me what is my incentive to return from a game at all if I am going to be punished for any amount of AFK time? It seems to me I might as well close League at that point and do something else.

There's no incentive to return to a game that real life pulls you away from. Even in the case of a troll who has a change of heart. Why is that not recognized.

And we WON and I got 2 honors from my team! Why am I being punished?

I'm getting a better computer in two days so I can play other games besides league.

Because when you AFK, you leave the rest of your teammates at a severe disadvantage for however long you're away. Even if you do come back, you left them to deal with a full enemy team, and put yourself at a disadvantage by letting yourself get behind in level.

You're looking at it the wrong way - you shouldn't have to be incentivized to "come back to a match" from AFK'ing, you should be incentivized not to AFK in the first place. Which is why the punishment for AFK'ing exists - to punish people who, willingly or not, give their teammates such a huge disadvantage.

An honest asshole is still an asshole. Like I said - even if you do return to the game, you do so having already severely harmed your team's chances of winning from being absent.

Because winning and being Honored don't magically exempt you from being punished. Imagine how easily that would be abused if you could circumvent punishment just for having ultimately won or gotten any amount of Honors post-game.

Discuss your punishment all you like, but don't turn this into a "I'm leaving league for a better game" post.

When you start a game, you commit to play the entire match. Life events come up, and the system doesn't punish you for a single ocurrence. You have to AFK multiple time to be punished.
