@Riot - Permanent /mute all ?
TL;DR: What are Riot's feelings about a permanent /mute all? One that will apply right when the game begins, without having to type it every game.
I've googled quite a bit for similar threads, but I couldn't find one with an official Rioter's response, or a decent case for this beyond one or two lines of 'please make it', so hopefully it's fine if I start a new thread on this.
I'd like to make a request for a permanent /mute all option. The option would serve exactly the same function as /mute all in any given game, but apply to every future game as well without having to input it repeatedly, blocking your teammates' chat from registering, but still allowing you to chat back with them. I think it would be fairly easy to do, and the pros would significantly outweigh the cons. I'll make the case here.
In Favor: The most apparent reputation I've gathered from both those who play and those who have only heard about League is one I'll agree with: very fun game, very creative designers and great balance team, but very toxic community. In the past year-ish, the ban system has gotten significantly more active in banning overtly toxic players. However, those who make only subtle and occasional nasty remarks will not be banned from the system. I can personally attest to this, as I report everyone who says low-key, nasty things like 'quit feeding' or 'you're so bad', which averages maybe 200 (not exaggerated) reports, but only 1.5 'a player has been penalized' messages per month. These players say things just bad enough to worsen the community, but not enough to get reported regularly enough for the automated system to serve repercussions.
While those who are very friendly, and typically play normal games often benefit from the chat whether it's reading funny jokes/memes and even making friends, there are a great number of people who use don't chat for non-competitive purposes, and often play ranked where the overall mood is significantly more competitive and the chat (I think it's fair to be said) has more lines used for nastiness than for actual teamwork/strategy. By enabling those who are more sensitive to subtle nastiness to indefinitely mute all players, they will be less tilted from the toxicity of other players, improving overall gameplay, and less prone to respond in kind, reducing overall toxicity.
Counter: League of Legends is a team-oriented game. By allowing someone to mute all indefinitely, communication is more stunted, and the overall spirit of teamwork that League encourages is discouraged and reduced. League already has the option to mute individual players, or mute the entire chat as it is. An additional permanent feature is counter-productive and accomplishes little that the /mute all option doesn't already accomplish.
Counter-Counter: Players who are ordinarily never instigate trouble, but respond very viciously to nasty remarks tend to mute everyone on a regular basis anyways. Players who tilt easily and are fed up of being put down often mute chat anyways. By having this option, you don't put a burden on these people to remember to mute chat every game which can be tedious, and unnecessary. I believe those who will use this option are most likely limited to only those who would greatly benefit from it, and won't be used by the general populace in a way that discourages general teamwork/communication. Furthermore, it could be designed such that you could as per usual input /mute all if you're in a good mood or just in the mood to chat, to undo the mute for a particular game. In case of hesitance on the potential negative effects, a trial period could be held on the PBE server, and players' feedback on the matter could potentially illuminate what overall impact this has on the game. I have a strong feeling, the response will be strongly in favor of having this option.
What is Riot's position on this? Has any consideration been given to the matter and if so, what was the verdict? If not, would it be possible for future consideration? Thanks for your time, if you read 'till the end.
