@Riot : Improving Ranked experience in Solo queue

Dear Reader,

I've only fairly recently started playing Ranked Solo queue. I will also tell up front that I'm not claiming to the new Faker or whatever. I have a lot to learn, no doubt about that.

In my short time of playing Ranked solo queue, I've come across some player issues. The things I consider an issue in ranked games (more than in normals) are in no particular order; Players being auto-filled for a position they are not good in (doesn't happen to me, I'm support) Toxicity in games. Sometimes to such a degree that they spend more time typing than playing.

  • Seemingly little action is taken after reports, which I actually spend time on to properly articulate the issues without 'raging' Trying a new champion, or a champion on an entirely different position without practice.

Some ideas I would like to share, and I invite others to comment, add to, and critique these ideas. Ranked Solo queue I believe should not have 'auto-fill' by the LoL server. So, a player should only be auto-filled if he or she selects 'auto-fill' before starting the queue. Having people auto-filled to a position they don't normally play puts the entire team directly at a disadvantage. I think closer attention should be paid to reports of people misbehaving in ranked. It is not only annoying to have a toxic team member, but as per the statistics of LoL, negative attitude loses games. Furthermore, I think a small guide when starting ranked to show some general guidelines for behavior in ranked, nothing fancy. Something like; 'Experiment in practice mode', 'try a champ first in normals', 'Trash-talking ruins the game' etc... just a few possible examples. The more extreme idea is to have a mastery cap on a champ. For example; only M5, M6, M7 can play ranked games. However, I do see a lot of potential problems with this as well.

Thank you for reading, and please share your ideas and comment too.

Cheers' H33P

You can get autofilled into something that you suck at. It always suprises me that people don't try to ask for a lane swap.

Also, if you don't want autofill supports, try to queue in flex queue. There are more supports there as a lot of them want to play with their buddies.

When I queued fill in flex queue, I got support 50% of the time, when I do that in SoloQ, I get support 90% of the time.

Toxicity in games. Sometimes to such a degree that they spend more time typing than playing.

It's the same on all modes.

The system will only give you a notification if the game you reported them was the one that punished them, you won't hear about them if they were punished down the road.

Also, you don't need to articulate too much into your reports, Riot has all the gameplay & chat logs already. You might just want to give a small note like "said he'll feed in pre-game and inted in game", which is good enough already.

Trying a new champion, or a champion on an entirely different position without practice.

No autofill = people waiting for maybe even 10+ minutes to get in queue. My queue time is long enough already as fill, I don't want it to be any longer.

Bad behavior is bad behavior. Different game modes shouldn't be treated differently. Plus that just really speaks to how you may need to get more knowledge of the behavioral system.

Furthermore, I think a small guide when starting ranked to show some general guidelines for behavior in ranked, nothing fancy. Something like; 'Experiment in practice mode', 'try a champ first in normals', 'Trash-talking ruins the game' etc... just a few possible examples.

ya .. they do a horrible job on education on regards to the behavioral system.

Auto fill is a necessary evil to avoid ludicrous queue times and match quality disparity (for example pitting a bronze against a gold player or silver against a diamond) especially at higher levels of play. At lower ELO it can be remedied by simply asking teammates to swap with you. "I got autofilled to jungle and I I'm really bad at jungle. Can I switch to top/adc/mid/sup?" Many times people will do so to increase their team's chances of winning. You're in the lucky situation because most people will complain that they got autofilled to support. Since you're a support main you can offer to switch with them and increase your team's chances of winning.

Toxicity is tough to combat. My best advice is to not respond to them. More often then not they are trying to cover up their own mistakes or inadequacies by blaming someone else. If you engage them in any way then it will just add fuel to the fire and they will type more than they will play.

I wish there were better feedback on reports as well. All too often I'll report someone for afking on fountain and taunting the rest of my team. Clearly behavior that needs punishment, but it doesn't seem to result in any sanctions. In order to be a deterrent the punishment must be swift and sure following the toxic behavior. Riot clearly needs to improve in this regard.
