PSA: "I got hacked" is not an excuse when you get banned for 3rd party software

And there are 2 very good reasons for this:

REASON 1: 99.99% of all "Hacks" are a case of "user gave away his account information".

  • Either willingly (the famous "my absolutely, 100% trustworthy friend who would neeeeever ever do something stupid")

  • or by falling for a phishing attack (fake website and so on)

  • or by re-using account credentials (username/password) in another online service

In either case, its the users fault.

REASON 2: No one can prove that it wasnt him in the first place Lets face it, "I got hacked" is just such a convenient excuse for a cheater isn't it? Especially in a world of online anonymity, where no one has to provide credentials, and everyone was abroad without internet connection juuuuust when it happened (proof not included).

Point is, Riot cannot know, and frankly, its not their job to verify such claims either.

If you actually believe you are among the 0.001% of people who genuinely got "hacked", by all means, make a request to Riot support. But if either of the above points is accurate in your case, don't expect them to help you, because frankly, there is no reason why they should.

Got hacked recently and I haven't been clicking on anything.

Could be my social media got compromised because of someone in some way.

In the middle of changing my shit anyway.

Makes me wish we went back to the pre internet gaming era... or well before it was popular.

I'd like to see the research/source on this.

I have 1 thing to add:

While I have no evidence, but I suspect few of those "hacked" got their serve because they might be frequenting internet cafes, where their rented machines could either be hacked or be tempered with by someone else, and obtained their details as they signed onto the game via there.

Hence some people may have their account details stolen for seemingly no reason, as in they couldn't recall giving their details away, that their personal computer is compromised, or that they had visited a random similar-looking site and entering their details.

But this is all speculation on my part, I have no evidence on this.

If true tho, under this situation, whose fault is it? Is it the fault of the IC owner for having compromised machines for their clients or is it the fault of the player to choose to go to an internet cafe?

It's a good thing you weren't implying riot actually cares about its player base. Wouldn't have made sense otherwise.

You can probably verify the IP which was used to log in. But then there are apps who "change" it, which makes it harder to detect. And you can play on a friend's computer.

Still makes me want 2 Factor Authentication.
