Too far ?

Let me start by saying I recently took a 14 game ban due to chat. Some of it was pure joking, others were telling certain people "things". The ban ends tomorrow but I will not be coming back to LoL because there are other games out there to play ;) I will not support their current tribunal that they have. Let me state, I was here when this game very first came out. Over the years, there have been some improvements made, hence its popularity. I really agreed in banning people that afk, leave game ectr. However, the whole verbal thing...meh come on.

This whole banning people for chat stuff is getting ridiculous. Every game I have ever played in my years, there is always negative chat. How you deal with it, is up to you. Tempers fly and people get angry. Things get said, but that is the part of every game, sport or competitive endeavor I know of. What really is the solution because everyone will get angry and slip up on the keyboard ? We are imperfect and it will happen, it always does. In the work force, people will say far worse things to you and they wont get banned, believe me.

The only true solution is muting all your chats. But, that defeats the whole reason of playing an online game right ? I have read many posts of people saying they will "do better", but persist in coming back and playing the game. Take some advice, go try something different. I enjoyed league for the years I have, but there are many more games on the horizons that do similar things.

Right now, Blizzards Heroes of the Storm is getting a lot better. They recently added a ranked bracket. The system is a bit different, but you will not get banned for chat. You will however get penalized for leaving games ectr. Blizzards great success resides with they know what gamers are, human and imperfect. Last night I played a game, got flamed the whole time. I returned the flames with flames, gaming 101. Just thought I might share. Oh yeah, go for it fanbois or fangirlos or faneutral, (see I can be politically corect).

A quick google search would confirm that Blizzard certainly does punish people who are verbally abusive in Heroes of the Storm (and in fact their other games as well).

No, they won't get "banned", but if they are consistently berating their coworkers for messing up or not doing things the way they want, gloating to competitors who they beat at something, or doing other similar toxic things, they'll be quickly shown HR, and if they still don't improve they're out. People get fired for being a horrible team member all the time.

We are imperfect and it will happen, it always does.

Getting frustrated does happen. I've been frustrated at multiple of my games today. I don't devolve into flaming others because of my frustration. I take my frustration and channel it in to becoming a better player - not trying to tear others down. If you are unable to control yourself, don't blame it on being "imperfect" - that's just a lack of self control.

Riot understands that people are human and make mistakes, hence why they allow for some leniency for bad days and games here and there. However, it becomes a problem when one makes that poor behavior a consistent thing. Yes there's a mute button and people should use it but if you're forcing people to mute you constantly then there's a problem with you. From Ulanopo's Knowledge Base:

“People who report are simply being oversensitive. The mute button exists for a reason.”

Let’s start with the Riot quote on this (link (http://forums.na.leagueoflegends.com/board/showthread.php?p=30696571#post30696571)):

Why is verbal abuse punishable if there is a mute button/language filter? Players shouldn’t need to rely on features like the mute button or language filter to engage with other players in positive ways. When a player verbally abuses another player and forces him to use the mute button, they have already created a negative experience for that player.

Simply put, Riot says no. You can scream and cry all you want, but it is their house and their rules.

With that out of the way, I think the topic deserves some further discussion. The theory is that, if people resolved to care less, then they would be happier. I often refer to this as “Argument from Stoicism” and I think it is a fairly weak philosophy because it places the burden on the person being expected to endure the behavior rather than the person exhibiting the behavior. “You should be able to handle it” is just a flimsy excuse for being a bully or a jerk. I have to be the bigger man so that you can do whatever you want? That hardly seems fair.

There is also the issue of how I spend my limited free time. Like most people, I am constantly required to make value judgments between the different forms of entertainment that are available to me and, let's be honest, we live in an age of nearly limitless entertainment options. If I'm having a bad day in League, I can just fire up Steam and play a whole bunch of games that don't require me to put up with someone's BS.

This is not an issue of weakness or thin-skin; it's a question of choosing activities that don't leave me feeling frustrated and angry. Too many of those experiences and I'll just find something else to do. Riot knows this.

Also from UKB:

“I don’t think that people should be punished for speech. Other things, like feeding, are much more disruptive.”

I’m not going to tell you that your opinion is wrong, but you should know that neither Riot nor the majority of the community agrees with you. This is evidenced by the fact that the community has always consistently punished verbal toxicity. There may be some minor disagreement over certain words and phrases, but the overwhelming consensus is that it isn’t welcome here.

Also, you aren’t ever going to get a pass on X because Y is worse. We’ll still punish you all day for ANY toxicity. Get used to it.

Ten years ago my manager was terminated for making some VERY crude jokes about my sexual orientation in front of other coworkers. It was his misfortune that the regional manager was visiting the store that day and caught the end of it. Talked to the RM and let him know he was playing around and I took absolutely no offense. Got to leave with pay for the full day and got a text shortly after from the manager letting me know he'd been terminated. I still get angry about it, because I probably could have sued back then. Oh well.
