Let's play "Is that acceptable banter?"

DOUBLE TAPPED E·2/22/2019, 8:23:18 PM·1 votes·1,773 views

So the way this works is I'll list a bunch of things that one might say to the enemy after outplaying them, and you tell me what is acceptable banter, if any of them:

"later nerds" "get fucked" "lmao trash" "git gud" "sit kid" "cya loser" "smd" "GET OFF MY SCREEN" "bitch please" "camp more idiot" "outplayed" "better jg/mid/top/ad/sup wins" "have fun in iron" "lol fuck you"

?

I kind of feel like you already know this isn't "banter", but things you'd say to insult or aggravate another player; "banter" is a two-way form of communication where both parties mutually understand that no insult is meant from the other. If you guys aren't on the same page and you're trash talking them with the intent to rile them up, it's not banter and it isn't ok.

"later nerds" "get fucked" "sit kid" "smd" "GET OFF MY SCREEN" "bitch please" "outplayed" "lol fuck you"

any of these are acceptable and harmless banter IMO. used in moderation ofc.

Personally...

"later nerds", "outplayed", as and a couple bonuses, "CY@" and "calculated" are all ok as banter. Of course, you can't use "CY@" because that's a classic Nightblu3 thing and you need to be subbed to have the right. (kappa)

I would argue that "have fun in iron", "get off my screen" and "better x wins" may be taken as banter in higher level play...but in Iron-to-plat should probably be avoided, because that area (ESPECIALLY silver and gold) almost seem to actively look for reasons to report people.

The rest I'm assuming you put on here as a test, because there's really no way any of that's gonna fly, and you know it.

I wouldn't have a problem with any of those.

The problem is different people have different opinions. Quite frankly I don't really care what my opponent says im not as soft as others. IMO if it isn't insulting someones race, religion, ethnicity, gender, sexual orientation then it is perfectly ok.

I'd say generally all of them are okay in moderation. You aren't compelled to work with the enemy team, so no concerns of teamwork or cooperation are expected of you. Trash talking is allowed.

But limit yourself to, say, 0-2 per game. More than that and you're taking trash talk and escalating to harassment territory. That's not a hard fact, but that's my read on the situation.

Since buying the Sylas “Unworthy” emote (the thumbs-down one), the urge to engage in banter has greatly diminished. I would 100% recommend it.

Later nerds would likely be acceptable. /edit: Outplayed would also likely be fine.

Aside from that, you seem to be misunderstanding what banter means.

ban·ter noun: banter

  1. the playful and friendly exchange of teasing remarks. "there was much singing and good-natured banter" synonyms: repartee, raillery, ripostes, sallies, swordplay, quips, wisecracks, crosstalk, wordplay

verb: banter

  1. talk or exchange remarks in a good-humored teasing way. "the men bantered with the waitresses" synonyms: joke, jest, pun, sally, quip;

If it's something you would say to someone that is not a close friend that you were trying to flirt with, then it can be considered banter.

If you want to banter just between friends, use the whisper command or voice chat.

What is 'playful' or 'friendly' depends on your relationship. Riot assumes that you are not close friends with the people you are playing with.

An analogy: Sports players on television will often slap each other on the butt. Football players will often slap each other in the helmet. Both of those things are acceptable, because they are friends, and are keeping that form of communication just between themselves.

A football player would be foolish to use the defense, "it was only banter" to excuse slapping someone in the face, especially if they had been in the middle of a mildly unpleasant interaction with that person.

Anything that is actually friendly or playful will not need a defense. No one gets punished for bringing donuts.

Anything is alright in moderation and as long as the other party isn't offended (With the exception of zero tolerance words/phrases)

I take anything the enemy says to me with a grain of salt, because obviously they're trying to tilt me.

Generally, I'd defer to DTN, but I want to at least give my thoughts on the examples provided.

later nerds outplayed

These two lines I don't imagine would be an issue. The former is a very diluted/denatured insult, and, while like DTN said, might still be an issue due to the intent to aggravate. The latter, while not banter in general, is still generally mild BM. On its own, I don't think it would cause problems.

get fucked lmao trash git gud sit kid cya loser smd GET OFF MY SCREEN bitch please camp more idiot better jg/mid/top/ad/sup wins lol fuck you

These, I can easily see raising flags with the IFS. The first is needlessly aggressive and inflammatory, the second is an open insult, the third is moderately inflammatory, the fourth is a moderate insult - which isn't quite so denatured as "nerd", by the way - "loser" is obvious as an insult, the initialism is vulgar and inflammatory, telling someone "get off my screen" is pointless and aggressive, "bitch please" is likewise pointless and inflammatory, "camp more idiot" is another open insult, "better x wins" is needlessly aggressive, and do I really need to say that "fuck you" is neither banter nor acceptable?

Further, I should also mention that calling any of the examples "banter" would be a misnomer. Banter is friendly and light-hearted, and none of these examples fit that description.

Since certain forms of banter are punishable, I'll just tell you what could lead to a punishment by the IFS:

"lmao trash"

This isn't okay

"cya loser"

This isn't okay

"bitch please"

This isn't okay

"camp more idiot"

This isn't okay

"lol fuck you"

This isn't okay
