The new Honor System

Everybody else is all excited about the change to Runes and Masteries, while I'm over here excited about the Honor changes.

I think rewarding people for Honor will help drive the community to be more positive, resulting in a more enjoyable game experience for everyone. I look forward to the specifics on this and will post again about my own experiences with it when it goes live!

Here's the video going over these updates if you haven't seen it (though many will be posting it).

What are your thoughts about this?

Me during a game: "Man, I have to remember to honor this player after the game"

Me directly after closing the lobby for that game: "DAMMIT I DIDN'T HONOR THAT PLAYER"

I'm going to be really happy when they make it an in-your-face part of getting from the game back to the lobby. Also gonna be a little sad when a team is just performing exceptionally well together and I can only honor one of them ;-;

Honor will be integrated much more tightly with the game.

  • After the Nexus explodes a new screen will appear, where you can honor one teammate.
  • Three types of Honors to choose from;
  • Stayed Cool - Tilt-proof, chill
  • Great Shotcalling - Leadership, strategy
  • GG <3 - Team player, friendly
  • When you enter the post-game lobby you'll see the honors you received
  • If you received 3+ Honors you will be recognized by the entire lobby

There will also be Honor Levels;

  • You'll have a badge in your profile next to your rank
  • Honor levels are gained simply by earning honor
  • Negative players can decay Honor levels
  • Higher Honor levels come with real benefits;
  • Key fragments now drop through the Honor System instead
  • More Honorable players earn more rewards, and can earn exclusive content

The new Honor System will be in the next PBE cycle this week!

I'm obviously a fan:-p.

I think the rest of the PB team is also excited about getting it released so they can sleep:-).

I'm a bit uncertain about the Honor's update. While it's great to see things being updated, and it's certainly a step in the right direction, I don't really like not being able to honor the enemy team, or only being able to honor one teammate. There are games when you will have exceptionally positive players on the enemy team, players who are perhaps managing to not give in to any sort of tilt or still managing to be cheerful and positive even though the game is not going in their favor, or players who go out of their way to give an enemy pointers on how to better play their champions. That sort of behavior should be rewarded, and this set-up won't allow for it. Nor will we be able to honor more than one teammate, even if the entire team deserves recognition.

And I'm also wondering whether the honors that have been earned in the past will be removed when the new system goes live, or if they will be rolled into it. I have to admit, I'll be really sad if all the positive honor that I worked for over the years is just tossed out.

I agree that it's really exciting. I want to believe that this will motivate people to behave themselves. Can we discuss two things that make me nervous, though?

A) If people can't skip it, does that mean that everyone will just get lots of honor all the time? And if they CAN skip it, won't they just keep doing that?

B) Quiet players seem to not win here. I myself am pretty talkative, but I don't want chat to start blowing up ALL GAME because everyone is in a competition to get honor from everyone. I don't want this to become yet another thing for people to compete over. It's better, I suppose, that everyone compete to be nice, but there is a point where it's too much, no?

rip they're actually adding voice chat fuck my poor ears lol

Loving it. It would be great if they made chests among the exclusive honor rewards, as plenty of people who play mostly one champ have tons of keys but no chests.

It encourages honor farming.

If you remember, a long time ago, when honor was relevant, you'd often see people at the end of the games spamming honor pls.

People will beg for honor (or be honor "whores," something like that) because of the rewards linked with it.

Honor System: I love everything about it, positive reinforcement is long overdue in the league system and is a better system than punishment especially punishment alone it's long been proven by studies, statistics and believed by psychology positive reinforcement is better so I'm glad it's here just annoyed it took this long to be embraced :P

Question: What happens to all the teamwork/etc upvotes I got before because I got quite a few over the years.

Idea on VOIP others have touched on in this thread: voice to text for people that don't want to voice.

Though it'd probably end up spammy I guess. That's one of my issues with voice chat in general, they use the fact it's easy to communicate to communicate lots of garbo I don't want or need to hear. That's on top of their GF/mom yelling at them in the background, police siren's, pet noises, mouth breathers, those who put their mic on the inside of a wind tunnel, also most people's voices are annoying by default there's a reason people like morgan freeman are paid good money to do voicework, their soul soothing voice is a rare gem not the standard fare.

My question is if you opt out (I'm definitely opting out sowwy), what would that look like to me? I mean there's already games I have to mute all anyway but if I don't mute them what should I expect to experience? Would voice to text be supported and if not what would it look like for me? Does the split issue of sides on this start to create groups of VOIP lovers who discriminate against those who do not like it and troll? etc.

For those of us who have a potato of a computer, how will the new honor system impact the load times when exiting a game. It already takes me 30 seconds to a minute for the client to load back up after a game, so will this new system make it even worse?

EvanThomas5/30/2017, 11:25:19 PM5 votes

I didn't see anything about honoring enemies. Any thoughts on this?

NekoniClaws5/30/2017, 8:17:05 PM4 votes

Feeling like as a support main, I'm never going to see key fragments ever again.

Just these traits are so unexceptional in a support's play, I don't see it crossing anyone's minds

Victorious Lux5/31/2017, 11:15:00 AM4 votes

I may have misunderstood, but so far it says "After the Nexus explodes a new screen will appear, where you can honor one teammate."

Am I the only one thinking why are you allowed to honor only one player ? I mean if two people in your team really helped, like the jungler carried the game by helping every lane, and the support helped teammates to play together in a smarter way, then why can't you honor both ?

MysticFlameHaze5/31/2017, 12:31:58 AM3 votes

I want to know if we would be getting anything for those who already have a ton of honors. as i still use the honor system when i think necessary and always liked the idea of it.

Yeah man i'm hyped! I'm actually fresh off a very regretful ban period and plan to redeem myself by achieving this honor rank at max level!

Guam guy35/31/2017, 1:36:37 AM3 votes

I have a question. I'm really proud of my little Friendly ribbon that I achieved way back when the Honor system had been first introduced to the game, and I've had the thing ever since then. Will I have to say a sad farewell to it after the update?

JRobin315/31/2017, 3:06:55 AM3 votes

Yay! Honor release is coming soon! I'm excited. I feel like I've been waiting forever and I have to wait longer.

  1. The old honor system lacked transparency. Players just didn't know where they stood with honor. I'm assuming that honor will show progress towards the next level of honor. Otherwise, more levels of honor isn't necessarily an improvement.

  2. Linking key drops to honor is an interesting idea. I got the impression that plenty of players reacted to improve when punishments prevented them from earning loot (when the loot system came out). So I think that key drops with honor definitely provides a strong motivation for many players to be honorable in game.

  3. The way they are going to present the honor selection post game is also interesting. Although, not really necessary, I think really puts honor in the forefront of players minds post game.

The real test of the honor system is going to be how it actually feels to players. If players feel like honor they achieve reflects their effort to be honorable, then I think we will see an improvement in players overall. But if players don't get a sense that the system reflects their efforts to be honorable, then they are going to ignore it. This is where I think transparency is going to be key and why I'm hoping players will be able to see not just the level of honor they have, but a visual of the progress they've made towards the next level.

I want the honor system to motivate players to improve and not simply be a different way to bestow gifts upon the already honorable.
