Banning Teammate's Champs

I played a normal game last night. I queued up as supp/top. I basically only play Shen, and I particularly enjoy him in the support role. I got into champ select, declared Shen, and my ADC proceeds to ban Shen. I asked "wth man, why?" and his reply was "not troll enough" - then he locked in Malphite.

Now, let me clarify - I've had this happen a couple of times before where the ADC wasn't familiar with Shen as a support champ, or insisted on a more meta pick, and banning a pick in these instances is fairly understandable (it's still a crap move, and will likely only hurt your team, but I can understand the rationale at least). I can also understand how this rationale would be much more legitimate in ranked - 4 people shouldn't be forced to play through a ranked game with a Jungle Janna. This, however, wasn't ranked. And this teammate wasn't concerned at all about the viability of my pick (as shown by his statements in champ select and throughout the game - as well as his own pick). This has happened to me (and probably everyone) MANY times, in cases just like this - I was simply being trolled by a jerk.

So, now I'm forced to either A) Dodge, and suffer a dodge penalty because someone else was being scummy, or B) Play through a game that I probably won't do as well in, and probably won't enjoy. I went with option B. We won, but I didn't do particularly well. To be fair, though, this guy did do fairly well as botlane AP Malphite.

To top it all off, after the game this guy says to me "you're welcome." Not a general "yw for carrying" (he didn't really carry), but "You're welcome" to me, specifically, by name.

I clicked the report button, and realized that there isn't really a good option for reporting this sort of behavior. If he had run it down mid, or something in game to sabotage his team, there's a pretty clear option for reporting that sort of toxicity. If he had abused his teammates in chat, there's a pretty clear option for reporting that sort of toxicity. This, though, not so much.

I decided to just let it go, accept that 30+ minutes of my life had been spent on a game I didn't really want to play, and that this guy would continue to be a jerk to future teams - that doesn't seem like the ideal outcome, though.

To the point, I guess: Why is banning your teammate's picks in norms even an option? Again, in ranked I can almost understand it, but in the overwhelming majority of cases in a normal game, someone bans a teammate's declared pick either A) Accidentally, or B) To be toxic. I can't think of a legitimate reason why locking out the ban button on a declared champion in a normal game would be a bad idea.

A friend of mine & I wanted to play Ivern Rengar in botlane a few weeks ago. I had someone on my team ban Ivern on me & after I asked why, he responded with "You're not playing that".

I don't understand why people think it's ok to try to control what others do in Normal Queues. Obviously if this was a Ranked one, I'd take this much more seriously. There's no need to ruin other peoples fun because "I don't want that on my team".

Situations of where it's acceptable:

  1. A viable broken champion was left unbanned and someone who doesn't have first pick wants to play. I will not risk the champion being played.

  2. Teammate picks a troll champion (aka. Sona ADC), my ban warns them that I know what they're up to, and it gives them a second chance to think "maybe I shouldn't already decide my team's loss".

  3. I don't like playing with that champion. Sometimes I don't want to see Zed on my team every single game, or literally any other meta pick. We have a choice in the matter.

It's not a punishable offense to ban someone's declared pick. Here are several scenarios wherein it makes more sense to ban someone's choice than not to:

  1. A high priority pick/ban, or new release/rework. If you think it's likely you'll lose to them, it doesn't matter if an ally has them declared. Especially if that ally is last pick. it's extremely likely the enemy will get the champion first. Granted that it's not okay to do that if the person who has them declared is First Pick (actual first pick, not just first pick for your team).

  2. The worst champions in the game, namely Ryze or Nidalee, but any champion whose mains aren't even performing well. There's no reason to expect an ally had the time to op.gg you and see that you're actually a Nidalee main with a 60% win rate on her. So their desire not to have the worst performing champion in the game on their team is perfectly reasonable.

  3. They expect you're trolling but think what you're doing is "off-meta". There's a striking difference between trolling and off-meta that I won't go into here because anyone who likes to troll refuses to believe the truth, but the fact is a lot of people don't like having a troll on their team. Either because they're likely to lose or, in the case of a troll support, they aren't used to playing around a partner who lacks the strengths of a normal support. (More specifically in your case, a partner who is intentionally playing a champion whose main strength is his ability to leave his lane to help other allies)

Since we all have our own ban, we've got the right to prevent allies from troll picking. This is especially important to have in the Bot role, where the lane and outcome of the game can be decided by who your support has chosen. If someone isn't used to having a troll support, even if you have performed well as that champ in that role, it's better for them not to let you do that.

Guy who gives the same option to his adcs regularly and proudly is now put in the same place and whines about it. Was the Malph a troll piece of shit in this instance? Yes. Would have deserved a report? Absolutely. But at least now you know how your laning partners feel when you pick Shen instead of a support.

Shen support actually sounds better than what one of my friends plays, he only plays irelia support and does super well with it actually. and he has complained about a few times when his team would ban irelia when he hovers irelia. He does sometimes go a more damage based build but it still works none the less.

Now he is both a support main and an irelia one trick, and irelia support is honestly not something that you see today. He does have more knowledge about irelia and support champs than other people so he can easily pull it off.
