So, a couple questions.

First: What defines "toxic"? I've never heard the word outside of League, but I see it thrown around so much that it's silly. Is "toxicity" quantifiable, or is it just kids whining about any opinions they don't like?

And question two: Why is Riot so bent on policing chat when, in the end, it's largely irrelevant? How someone plays the game affects you, but chat doesn't -- so why is a lot of the focus for moderation on chat?

The definition of "toxic" can depend on the person. Personally, I tend to consider a player 'toxic' if they are being a dick by unnecessarily antagonizing/insulting other players, trolling, raging, etc.

Riot is 'bent' on policing chat because:

  • That is where a large amount of toxicity occurs since it is one of the main forms of communication between players
  • It can be largely automated through software systems since it is text-based with a high degree of accuracy
  • Chat can greatly influence the game for players since it can affect their behaviour or mood rather easily depending on what is said. Even if you aren't being targeted, seeing a raging player in the game can be rather demotivating.

  1. Toxic is anything that makes other players play worse or have a worse attitude as a result to them. So technically this could be nearly anything that annoys you.
  2. Most players get concerned when others insult them and also by policing chat players are less likely to be negative making the game overall more enjoyable to play.

I think people are just looking for another reason to blame for their bad plays and lack of experience of trying to win the game. In my opinion, those socalled mmr or elo is just masking the badness of the players. Like the game itself are heavily team dependent and one mistake could cost a game; and whenever u see an adc behind cs, its indirectly losing thr game already. Or once u died in lane if the enemies know how to capitalize the mistake then its a gg. Toxicity/ or rather argument happens even if real life like either intentional or unintentional; in game, i dont think it affects much to players as most players are just equally bad with no exp of carrying a game. I agreed with u of like people just coward to admit their mistakes and moving forward to the next game.
