we should be surrendering a lot more

people dont like to surrender. i can understand that. giving up is not something anyone wants to have to do. but before deciding to battle it out to the end in that 5-25 game you should realize just how much of a long shot you are taking. and how much of your own time you are throwing away.

comebacks do not happen often in league of legends. i had no idea how rare they actually are until i recently started paying more attention. and what i have found makes me think it is a mistake to ever vote no when behind.

looking over the statistics from ranked games of some players selected at random i find that whichever team gets a lead of 2k+ gold first wins about 90% of the time. 90%! check your own match history and see.

but i thought maybe people just tend to give up when they fall behind. so decided to check a player who would be very unlikely to give up when behind - chermorg. when checking chermorgs match history in ranked games i found a shocking 4% winrate when a team fell behind by 2k gold. thats 1 game out of 25. check for yourself if you dont believe me. https://matchhistory.na.leagueoflegends.com/en/#match-history/NA1/237090141?matchType=2

maybe you think it is still worth it to keep fighting? even for a 10% or less chance to win? i recommend you do the math on it.

calculate how much time you could have saved. the average game goes on for more than 15 minutes after a 2k gold lead has been reached. meaning you could save 15 minutes or more per loss if you would vote yes when your team falls behind. thats a lot of time! think about it!

Eh their are different factors on if/when I'll throw in the towel. If I know their isn't much chance to come back then ya, but if my team is behind due to us having mid/late game champions vs all early game champions then it is very possible for us to hold out for the win. Also if we have a better team fight team then them.

Most meta champions atm are Early game Lane dominant champions, they will start to fall off.

Also if it's my last game before work or something then whats the point in quiting, I can't just play another, and that time between surrender and work will be wasted.

I also grew up playing sports, and many of my coachs recited the same thing. "Up or down 10, fight till the end", "If the clock is still ticking then you better be still running", "If you still have a breathe, you can still give it your all" and my all time favorite my drunken father would shout at me (two of them actually) "Micheal Jordan practiced, then he practiced more, and when he got tired? He kept practicing" and "Do you think MJ would of just thrown in the towl? No now keep going."

While these are awfully cliche, they stuck in me and I'd personally rather be defeated then ever just give up. Even if my time is "wasted" (I don't really think it is because there is always a chance) , because it will ultimately make me a better player. I've never been one to give up before, I'm not about to start now.

So ya, it takes a lot for me to just give up, and I've played League long enough to truly know when that time is, but if I have teammates willing to keep fighting then I won't be the one to give in. Even playing losing games is good practice.

edit: Me and a couple of my friends who have played together since Season 3 have had more come backs then I'd care to share, until you hit the true upper elos, there is always a chance superior teamwork can always bring you back.

I won't do early surrenders. If there is a surrender later in the game, it's because every other player wanted to surrender. I've had so many games where all it took was a single team fight win to push towards a victory. I've played games where we were losing in every lane, and we still ended up winning. I play to enjoy the game. I don't play for quick victories, or quick matches. Late game is a completely different situation compared to early and mid game, and for some reason, people are scared of late game. If you're on the losing side, your chances of winning decrease. After a period of time, that chance of winning increases again, eventually becoming a 50/50 chance to win or lose the match. Likewise, if you're on the winning side, it is to your advantage to push as hard as you can and try to win early, as your chances of winning later on will decrease.

I still enjoy playing even if we're behind, to some degree even more. You really need to plan ahead, both for macro and micro play. When you're winning you can mess up without great consequences, but when you're losing every move counts. That's where you're learning to play League and that's where you're improving.

Remove the surrender function unless at least one person is afk.

Comebacks don't happen when you have a garbage attitude, think snowballing is life, and don't know what the macrogame is.

You can up your WR by 10% by doing two things:

  1. Looking at your minimap twice as often as you currently do
  2. Brainwash yourself into understanding that towers are more important than your KDA, objectives, and your IRL children.

You're getting downvoted by the NEVAR SURRENDER!!!1 crowd (two of which always seem to make it into my games without fail), but you're not wrong. It would be more beneficial for your skill to get out of the doomed game and get into a new one and try again. There is no skill to be gained, no test of anything other than your patience, to stay in a game that far behind.

With a ~30 minute average game duration, getting out of two doomed games at 15 allows you to play one more in the same amount of time.

If one game in around 20 with a 2k gold deficit results in a comeback, those are 19 doomed games that don't have to be played out in full. Abandoning this NEVAR SURRENDER mindset allows you to play nine and a half more games than you would in the same amount of time than if you insisted on seeing the stomps out all the way.

I don't know about you guys, but spending an extra almost 5 hours of absolute misery every 20 games just in the off chance this will be the one game that allows a comeback... that doesn't strike me as a great trade.

Why not apply the same logic to real life sports then? Think of all the time you could save if your kids teams just gave up after they got behind! Imagine being able to go home from watching basketball early because your team were down at the first quarter so didn't bother finishing! Let's encourage everyone to give up at the first sign of adversity!
