"Muted, Reported... Enjoy ban :)"

So even though you solved the problem for yourself you are going to further damage the situation by telling that person that they are "reported" and piss him off even more? I have something to say about this.

I just think that if you mute someone and they are no longer bothering you that you should not go out of your way to harass them with a report. It just makes things worse by creating a situation where that player was unhappy with his play experience before, but now he is even more unhappy because of the spiteful report he received from another player. I think that people who make their intentions of reports known (as pretty much everyone does) are just as bad as the ones who should be reported. It's like if someone is having a bad attitude in a game and another player immediately jumps on it saying "muted, reported" as if they were waiting for a reason to report another player. In my opinion it's a harassment of it's own reporting other players whenever you get a chance, instead of maybe using your better judgement? Like if the player calmed down later and maybe wasn't acting up anymore or they apologize, then why report? Other than the motive that you want to hurt that person's experience because they may have hurt yours. The report system, to me, has become more of a revenge system than anything else. Players think, "Oh well he was rude to ME, so I am going to report HIM and I hope HE gets banned." The point of the report is to discourage toxic players, but if reporting just increases toxic behavior by sanctioning people to report anyone and everyone that they can in hopes of a ban on that player... It doesn't seem right to me. It's just going to make that "toxic player" more irritated and more toxic because the person who reported them did so with the intention banning them from the game for as long as possible, as well as the fact that they were toxic too, but they did not get reported. I know this because on multiple occasions, in fact most occasions, when I witness a player who reports another player, I see it accompanied in chat by words like "Muted, reported... Enjoy the ban." Most of the time the person who reports is just as toxic as the player who started it all and says stuff in chat to that person that is just as rude, but they slide by and don't get reported because they were not the initiator. This kind of "loophole", if you will, results in players waiting for someone else to say something negative so that they have free reign to attack and berate them, then later report them. I notice that these players who take advantage of this seem to be enjoying themselves throughout the process, as if they are getting away with murder and placing the bloody gloves in someone else's gym bag.

There are way too many report police in this game, tons of players are power-tripping about reporting other players even if they weren't that bad or they already muted them and/or the person is no longer a problem. 99% of players on this game don't even allow the other player to correct their actions in-game, they simply mute them and report. If that person changed things around or wanted to make amends for their actions, you would never know because you muted and reported indiscriminately... even gleefully at times.

In no way do I condone toxic and rude behavior on the game, but if people are using the report system to attack other players while remaining immune themselves to the penalties, I think we need to take that into consideration when evaluating tribunal cases. I also think that we need to ENCOURAGE players to play POSITIVELY rather than PUNISH and DISCOURAGE them from playing NEGATIVELY. This is basic psychology 101, punishment does not change behavior in a positive way, it simply causes a person to go about their negative behavior in a different way that does not receive punishment or reduces the chance of that punishment occurring. Thanks for reading, and please feel free to share your thoughts and maybe add to the discussion.

"I just think that if you mute someone and they are no longer bothering you that you should not go out of your way to harass them with a report"

So they should be able to harass whoever the fuck they please for eternity but never face consequences for their actions?

Good luck with that.

A false report won't harm you. But it does make future reports from the reportee lose face.

Personally, I'd like to see a more stern approach to that. Something like:

"You have recently submitted a report about another player that, after an investigation, had no validity to it. Your ability to use the report feature is now suspended for seven days time. Future instances of abusing the report feature will result in greater suspensions and possibly include action against your account."

While saying "Enjoy ban" isn't something fully acceptable, the report would be so the toxic player wouldn't be able to go on to flame others in the future.

If you report and your positive reinforcement works, then they will reform and not get punished. If it doesn't work the report will contribute to punishment.

If you don't report and your positive reinforcement works, then they will reform and not get punished. If it doesn't work then they continue to be a problem and take longer to be punished.

Basically the worst scenario is when you don't report. You need to report actions you don't want to see or the report system is not going to work as well as it should. Don't just give them the benefit of the doubt.

I think this post needs a TL;DR.

I guess I am really not that surprised that no one is taking my side on this issue, because most players probably fall in this category of retaliation and do everything in their power to instigate the negative behavior they see so that they look legitimate when they lash out and use the opportunity to be toxic while remaining relatively untouched by the report system themselves.

Anyways, I hope that even if you do not agree with me now, you can see where I am coming from in the future and think more about how you treat negative players rather than fighting fire with fire or trying to get one over on them simply because you can. Just because someone else said something negative or rude doesn't give you license to reciprocate the behavior. That would be the same as sinking to their level and it is very hypocritical.

  • I DO NOT think that people should never get reported.

  • I DO NOT think that people should be allowed to be toxic to others just because reports should be used more sparingly.

  • I DO NOT think that the report system is a perfect system.

  • I DO think you should report people only when they really deserve it.

  • I DO think that reporters need to show better behavior than those they are reporting.

  • I DO think that muting people is sufficient in most cases.

  • I DO think that if you are reporting for bad behavior you should report all parties involved who had bad behavior... Not just the first person who spoke or said the worst thing.

i wouldn't say i use the report system to get "revenge," if someone is being toxic, yeah i'm gonna report him. i don't see how muting enters into it: there's no inherent punishment in the muting, so it doesn't really let them know that they're being rude, and i don't think muting was put in as an alternative to banning, so much as a way to stop the guy that you're going to report anyway from distracting you further or tilting you. I think we've all been in a situation where a guy was being a jerk in game and we sat there typing it out to tell him so and watched a play happen or got killed while typing. the mute button is more of a way to stop that kind of stuff from happening than as a way to appropriately respond to toxicity.

I use muting as a reminder to myself to report that person. I don't announce it, I don't try to convince anyone else to also take either action. I just play out the game and quietly file the report afterwards.

I follow the philosophy that muting makes the game less unpleasent for myself, and reporting helps weed out poor behavior so other people are less likely to have to put up with it.
