Can I not defend myself in chat?

Hey guys,

I was just given a 14 day ban. Not looking for sympathy but I am looking to understand.

I was flamed by a player and I defended myself. His duo went in on me and was harassing me as well so I went off in the chat. I forgot to report them after and I got banned immediately probably for dropping a few curse words. Is there no consideration for who "threw the first punch," so to speak in these matters? Are good people going to keep getting banned because we won't let someone push us around?

I don't know obviously I'm not a saint but I just wanted to reach out to the community because I know I am not alone in feeling this way.

If you counter-punch, you can get banned. It doesn't matter what other people said. Your words are going to be judged independently.

You can post chat logs if you want specific pointers about what went wrong, but the best thing to do when someone is harassing you is to mute them and report them after the game. Don't tell them you're doing it, that will just fan the flames. Let your actions speak for themselves. No need to get salty in chat.

In most self-defense classes, the first rule you learn is the best method of self-defense that 100% guarantees your survival:

If you don't have to fight, don't.

Self-defense is about defense. It's about surviving, not beating up the enemy. Generally that's considered assault. That's why we have things called "reasonable force." If you sock someone in the jaw because they shoved you, you're not going to walk away scott-free from that in the eyes of the law

Also, your conflict isn't in a vacuum. The three-to-eight other players in the game have to watch two manchildren misbehave instead of playing the goddamn game.

You don't get punished for saying curse words or defending yourself. It's HOW you go about defending yourself.

If you got a 14 day ban it was for throwing around a zero tolerance word or phrase, such as hate speech or encouraging self harm. You can post your chat log if you've got questions.

You don't have to drop to someone else's level to not let them push you around. It's chat, not your physical well being. You have a mute button if it's getting out of hand.

Defending yourself is using the mute function. And using that you will never get you punished.

Flaming back is never defending yourself.

"They started it!" Is really a kindergarten thing and last I checked we aren't in kindergarten anymore.

Well I would like to just say that... League Of Legends IS NOT the real world. In the real world I would defend myself from those junk heads too, because You just cant mute them and tell the police they are agressive because the police wont care that someone called someone (You) a motherf**er. Well in League You dont have to do anything about it because YOU can mute them and the rest will be done by Riot (: Just be sorry for them in chat because they dont know how to behave properly and (if it is gonna help You mentally after the verbal abuse) just tell them that you are muting them and reporting and give them something to think through (; REMEMBER its just a video game (:

Think of it like this: Some random man starts screaming at you while you're trying to enjoy your day. This crackhead is trying to convince random strangers that you suck and don't deserve the things you have and that you're a terrible person and you smell and that YOU'RE the crackhead. Are you going to argue with the junkie and create a scene or are you going to ignore them and walk away?

If you chose to fight them and create a scene to defend yourself from a literal random stranger and the other random 8 other people watching the interaction when you'll never see them again, they're going to call the police because all they see is two crackheads arguing about nothing and then you go to jail. Versus you just ignoring the weirdo and living your life.

You don't have to engage with the junkie, just like you don't have to engage with your team. You don't need to defend yourself from the weird dude yelling at you or the 8 strangers watching the interaction, just like you don't have to defend yourself from a toxic team member to prove to the 8 other players in your game that you're a good player. All they see is to weirdos yelling at eachother, so they call the police on BOTH of you and both of you get punished; that's how the system works.

You're always free to post logs.

I don't know what is so diffecult about defeding oneself without getting receiving a punishment... If someone blaes for say... going 0/3 as teemo vs pantheon, then telling someone that pantheon can harass teemo under turret and dive him without any consequences does not require swearing. Telling someone that it is diffecult for Shyvanna to gank if you push your enemy under turret does not require insults either.

And if they need to use insults to talk, they are not worthy of my words anyway...

Yeah, their system for finding toxic players is whack containing zero tolerance policies and purposefully ignoring any kind of context. Just remember that not responding to some jackass harrassing you is not the same as letting them "win" in some verbal contest, rather than it's a dignified way of letting them know that you are not interested in their verbal venom.

I mean, usually not even worth it

Just say "lol" at them in chat and they get even angrier
