How Should You Farm When Under Fire?

Hey Everyone, not sure if I'm posting this question correctly since I almost never use the forums but I have a serious question. I'll start with a little background.

When I first started playing League of Legends I played a whole lot of Player vs AI. This went on for a few months before I finally found the courage to start playing PvP (I actually have a lot of wins in PvP under my belt after a year). Before I started with PvP I played a lot of mid lane mage (Lux and Orianna for example). When I went into PvP and I went mid, almost every single time I did I got utterly destroyed. On top of that, I found out how terrible I was at last hitting (I would only manage to last hit well with Annie because of her Q).

What made it even worse for me was when I pieced together how difficult it is to last hit with a mage because of how weak their auto attacks are. All of this scared me away from mid lane and for half of the year I've been playing league, I've stayed bot lane. I've been in bot lane for so long now That I've become a great adc and support.

So here is my dilemma. I really want to go back to mid lane with my favorite mage champions so how should I go about farming in a solo lane when I'm A: under fire and/or B. playing as a mage with weak auto attacks? I really want to make this work. It would be a big leap forward for me if I could go back to solo laning and manage without a second buddy in lane with me.

Thanks in advance for any advice and tips/tricks.

There is a guide to farming and last hitting somewhere around here, but I can't remember it for the life of me. Either way, it takes a lot of dedication. So, your solution for now would probably start by choosing a long range or "safe" mage, such as Xerath and Brand. They usually take less in fire fights (GET IT) because of their long range. Then, start realizing what your Basic Attacks do for damage. Then, left click the minions to see their stats. If you see they are low enough for you to kill them, attack. An easier way is just guessing based on how low the minion's health is.

You have to make mistakes before you get better.

  1. Feast is bae with last hitting. You must run it imo on mages for laning.
  2. Practice last hitting in a solo custom game. Set yourself up in lane and just try to last hit the minions for 10 minutes. You'll be at about 116 (season 5 minion spawn time) if you do it perfectly. Miss more than 5 cs, start over. Do this a lot and you will get better. A lot of it is just not overestimating your autos and managing minion health when doing autos.
