Guilds/Clans in League of Legends
What?
Guilds/Clans are normally used on MMORPGs (at least is where I found about them) as a way to group players that share a similar way of thinking and want to work together towards a common goal. The guild’s name, purpose and banner are typically picked by the Guild Leader which is the player that creates the Guild.
For example, in League of Legends there could be a Guild named Caitlyn’s Marksmen that focused on playing serious ranked TTL or Master Yi’s Templars that focuses in Casual Summoner’s Rift or maybe even an all around social guild, possibilities are endless.
Why?
It makes grouping easier. Think about a guild named Knight Templars. This guild is full of helpful awesome players focused on serious SR 5s ranked and you are just dying to get serious in SR as well but all your regular friends in LoL just wanna play casual. Well, you apply to join this guild and once you are in get into a team.
It may help reduce toxicity in game. While in a guild every player is representing his/her guild. A good guild won’t allow any player to stain it’s name by bad behaving. If complains reach the guild’s administrators the player in question will get investigated and kicked out if necessary. If you want to enjoy the perks of being in a good guild, you have to behave and follow the rules.
Also, clans and game communities are sprouting all around the forums already. Many have dedicated web pages and application forms already. Why not give it some structure and make it official already?
Where?
Right there in the chat room’s bar. You can already create public chat rooms for anyone to join. It just needs to be twitched around to make it possible to create something similar to a “private” chat room. The biggest differences between the public chat rooms and this “private” chat room acting as a guild would be first, you need to be invited to a Guild in order to join and second you can only be in one “private” room at a time.
How?
My idea is to use something similar to IRC. For those who don’t know, Internet Relay Chat (IRC) is an application layer protocol that facilitates transfer of messages in the form of text. In other way, is an old chat.
Here is an image of how it looks.

The bottom part is for text input. On the left side you can see everything everyone says and some announcements like people getting online and stuff. Now, the important part is the right side. There you can see what would be the guild member’s list with the summoner’s name of all the guild members online at the moment.
If you look closely you may notice that the first three names on the list have an @ before the name itself. This means they are administrators, with privileges like muting, kicking or even banning players from “the guild”.
The most popular prefixes are ~ for owners, & for admins, @ for full operators, % for half operators and + for voiced users. The guild leader decides if and how to use this. It can be set that anyone can type directly into the guild chat or only players with voiced (+) privileges and above. It can be set that only full operators (@) and above can invite someone else in the guild or that only the owners (~) of the guild can kick someone out. You can even let half operators (%) decide which players can be voiced (+) or which players to be muted.
**When? **
Let’s wait for Riot decide on that.
Some ideas for the future.
After setting the ground there is much more that can be added. Here are some ideas:
Guild Level: The guild gains experience from all it’s members until it maxes out.
Guild Perks: Depending on the level of the guild you are in you may receive additional benefits. For example. At guild level 5 you gain represent, that lets you customize an emblem for your guild. At guild level 10 you gain Fast Track which rewards members of the guild with some extra XP if they are not maxed yet. At 20 you gain Competitive Spirit that allows your guild to join the season tournaments, and so on.
Guild Emblems: After reaching the appropriate guild level the guild leader may be able to set the guid emblem by combining three things. First the icon, select an icon from a list of predefined icons. Second the icon color. Third the background color. Here RIOT can add something to it’s business model like custom icons for your guild emblem that can only be purchased with RP by the guild leader. Also the guild emblem would be something that appears among your summoner icons and each player can decide to portray it or not.
Guild Tournaments. This is more like a ladder than an actual tournament. Guilds are given a position in the ladder depending on something like the sum of all the members MMR divided by the number of members. By the end of the season, much like how rank tiers work, the first three guilds would be awarded with something representative like a little frame for the guild emblem. Gold for the first, Silver for the second and Bronze for the third.
Guild Tags: Much like in ranked when choosing your guild name you could be prompted to choose a guild tag too. Guild members may decide whether to display their guild tag while they play other than ranked games or not.
If you have any questions, comments or more ideas on how this would work please post below and I will be more than happy to reply. Thank you for reading.
