Updated Patch Notes layout. Thoughts?

RiotRiotAether·2/10/2014, 8:58:02 PM·10 votes·7,571 views

You guys have probably noticed that the Patch 4.2 Notes look significantly different from our previous releases (4.1 Notes for comparison). We've changed a lot, particularly in how we handle balance changes.

The team (myself, RiotPwyff, MoltovCarrot and Azrael) would love to get your thoughts on the revamp and where we still have room for improvement. Feel free to get super granular and super specific - we've been going through the changes with a fine-toothed comb, so you won't lose us in the details.

And for those of you who can't quite put your finger on what about the change you like or dislike, I've added a basic poll so you can still let us know how you feel overall.

PS: Readers who landed here from other sites, remember that those of you from EUW and EUNE can post here now!

Absolutely love the new layout. Easier to read, easier to see changes and much better looking with cleaner layout and images.

The new format looks fantastic! It makes the patch changes a lot easier to see and compare to their previous iterations. In particular, laying out the damage increase formula on Ziggs's passive gives a much clearer picture on how its damage evolves as he levels up.

This may not be a huge bit of criticism, but it would be nice if you gave more visual indications to some of your changes. It would be awesome to see Ashe and Soraka's new icons in the patch notes, and perhaps even get a visual on Xerath and Skarner's reworks as well as the new effects on the updated summoner spells.

I actually like the strikethroughs for the stats, but in the instances discog mentioned (where text like "No longer slows" is striked), I'll agree that it does seem a bit confusing.

Great work on the updates overall. I found it way easier to read and I'm happy to see most of the red body text gone. I'm interested to see how you guys plan on utilizing that right column better!

I liked the old ones in that the descriptions were in different colors; having the patch notes and their justifications in the same color makes it seem very monochromatic. I do like the abilities being listed with the icons and everything to avoid confusion though. However, the reworks look a little sloppy; the two of them look completely different and there's no standardization.

Xerath's rework looks lean and mean, while Skarner's looks like you're trying to justify the changes to him by saying "we moved this here and that there" with the mess of tooltip changes and strikethroughs; it makes it look like you guys were confident in the Xerath rework and didn't feel the need to list the old abilities, while Skarner's rework will be more controversial and must be justified instead of just listing what his abilities do now.

Would be nice if the Related Content section at the top right didn't make for a huge empty space down the entire side of the patch notes, although that's also an issue with the general layout of the new site (like how almost half this thread is empty grey space for me because of my monitor size).

Mattarias2/10/2014, 9:25:49 PM3 votes

So much nicer! Thanks guys! :D

Nice work with the new layout. Since you gave us the opportunity to add some champion icons, I would love to see a sub-community to make builds for champions like in mobafire. I hope you will do that so that we don't have to open mobafire anymore. It would be good to have that on league of legends official site.

The new layout surprised me -- in a good way. I like that Riot is putting more care into the little things. Keep up the good work on that.

My only issues (and small ones at that) is that;

  • the patch mentions new ability icons / doesn't show them
  • the patch mentions new particles for old Xerath skins / doesn't show them

Patch notes overall need just a bit more tweaking -- but again, it looks great & good job.

Improvement. A -lot- easier to dash from point of interest to point of interest.

yes,I agree.:p

I like the new layout myself. It's easier to navigate to what I find important, or if I need to double check that I didn't read something wrong the first time. The organization and navigation make it much nicer.

The look is a bit cleaner as well. GG Riot!

MrYuri2/12/2014, 5:35:12 PM1 votes

Not sure if its the new patch, but the connection and my ping has risen a lot, and now i cant even log back in. Is this due to my connection, or new patch!?! Really just want to play :D

I like the change, but the one thing I noticed (and disliked) most is in the champion ability change format. I'm not a fan of how separated the ability name feels from the description of what was changed. The small text size for the change vs. the size of the ability name really threw me off for the abilities with only one change, especially when it was at the end of a champion's section. (See Kayle ult notes)

I just think that making the first part (" Mana cost:: ") bold, darker, and a little bigger would make it feel like less of a chore to pick out the actual changes from the rest of the bloat.

Mandaari2/10/2014, 9:57:09 PM1 votes

I'm not a fan of the strikethrough format. It feels redundant and cluttered. Specifying that values were lowered at later ranks, for example, felt easier to read and showed your intent more clearly.

Also the ToC looks very scrambled (I know this hasn't changed). At a glance it's not obvious what the horizontal rules are separating. And having the larger headings share lines just looks awkward, especially when it means the headings with subsections get a single line while the ones without will share a line.

On a positive note the individual entries are very clear and look much better. The champion entries aren't cluttered anymore, nor are their abilities. Definitely an upgrade here IMO.

While I feel like the new patch notes mince words a little more and a little better than the old layout of patch notes did, I feel like looking at actual stats could be improved. Overall, I'm going to say that I like this new layout more overall, but at the same time I feel like it could use some adjustments. Another such adjustment would be to make them just a little smaller. I feel like this new layout is rather bulky when compared to the previous layout.

Viscacha2/11/2014, 3:09:52 AM1 votes

The new layout looks good to me. Also, i think this format will change the perspective of some other people

The white border that you stuff it into could be widened, and then you turn it into a double page format.

Instead of scrolling dow so far, you implement a lot of unused page spaced, while having a line down the middle to visually separate the "pages". You could have the Skarner and Xerath rework side by side. You would be able to see/acess the information faster instead of having a tall wall of words.

Veioh2/11/2014, 5:08:02 PM1 votes

I honestly have no problems with the changed format, alot nicer, smoother, fine by me. any other changes we could be expecting like drop boxes, tabs, etc?

Hellioning2/11/2014, 7:29:00 PM1 votes

I genuinely didn't even notice you changed anything.

I don't really like the new layout. So much empty space on the left of the play button. Is there anyway we can add something there? Like maybe adding our MMR or LoLking stats?

Linna Excel2/12/2014, 3:25:19 AM1 votes

I'm looking at them side by side and the amount of difference I'm noticing is minimal.

That said, I think I like the red text better than the gray text for riot comments.
