ive used iphones for about 4 years, swapped to android for about 4 years, both have their unique ups and i wouldnt say one is better than the other overall.

now im at a crossroad. ive been waiting to upgrade my s7 for a while, i was going to go with the iphone 7 originally, until apple dropped the physical home button and audio port, at which point i decided to upgrade to the note 7 instead, we all know how that didnt work, so im still here using an old s7.

i want to give it to my girlfriend, so im desperately waiting for a worthy new phone to get. i was sure i was going to get the s8, the logical upgrade to the s7. and then it happened. the s8 was rumoured to have a finger print reader on THE BACK OF THE PHONE. well, i find that completely lacking class, and will likely not upgrade to the s8 if its true. i just dont know what to do, looking at the rumored phones for 2018 they all seem significantly inferior to my s7, or last years iphone 6 (since the iphone 7 cant accomplish even basic tasks anymore).

i really want some form of waterproofing on the phone, which is why i love samsung.

outside of samsung android is pretty terrible in general, all of the phones are either very ugly, or VERY UNCOMFORTABLE. the virtual keys android encourages manufacturers to use are my main gripe with the OS, i would not swap to a phone with no buttons on the front (at least have touch buttons, but if its one of those things where i have to swipe the screen to get to the buttons, well, that just wont happen.

im hesitant to upgrade to an iphone because i lose a lot of features i use on my android, however, i do prefer the iphone design and while i dislike the closed off app store, i think the apps in general function better on iphones than androids, or at least look better.

now, assuming that samsung really does put the fingerprint reader on the back of the s8 there is no way im going to upgrade to it.

apples new phone will have an oled screen finally, so thats good, but its likely not going to be waterproof, which is a less big deal than the fingerprint on the back, but i lose a lot of functionality.

all other android manufacturers lack class imo.

and im not ruling out a windows phone, if microsoft actually releases one, i currently have a surface tablet and im very happy with it.

requirements for phone:

  1. have buttons at the base (even if they are just touch buttons, although i prefer at least 1 normal button)
  2. not be a big paperweight (looking at you iphone7)
  3. not be the ugliest thing ever.

secondary requirements: good integration with cloud services (all of them, not just icloud) easy access to files (as in i dont need itunes to access my phones insides)

things that make phones a no-go:

fingerprint readers on the back of the phone. no buttons at all on the front. ugly black bar with 3 buttons on the touchscreen (looking at you every android ever pretty much) pricetag under 700€

so, does anyone have suggestions as to what i can do?

I have a OnePlus 3. Have had it for about 9 months now, still very happy. Only weird thing I have discovered so far is that sometimes it shuts down for mysterious reasons (once every month or so), but no other technical issues.

I never quite get the need to upgrade their phone.

I mean upgrading phone once every 5 years or something is 1 thing, but upgrading it every year or every couple months really is way too much. You don't need that upgrade.

Similarly, only consider the features if you actually use them. Otherwise it's really quite void.

EDIT: As for the suggestion part, I'm using the shoddy ASUS Zenfone 5. But hey it gets the job done for me. The entire phone is default black, so if you like black you are going to love it, otherwise you might not like it so much; but you can change the back case though. There are 3 touch buttons but otherwise you're going to use the screen, and the screen is pretty big. There is fingerprint functionality I think if you want it for security, but if you're concerning about privacy it's at least not on the back of the phone. And yes, this boy does have weight, it weighs like a pocket notebook if not heavier (to give an idea, you will always feel it no matter what if it's in your pockets). I don't think it's water proof though. Lastly, since I don't usually use phones beyond mostly basic functionality I am not sure if there's any fault, but texting, calling, listening to music, taking notes, browsing and taking pictures feel pretty good on this one, and the interfaces are imo quite intuitive which is always good.
