What scares you?
Hello everyone, just a quick little experiment I guess you could call it. Feel free to write out a story if you'd like to, but foremost, Im looking for imaginations; allow me to explain myself.
With the recent slew of adventure horror titles hitting the indie scene, and some above par "A" developers rethinking an approach to conventional horror and how to properly execute it, I recently began to contemplate and critique ideas in my strange little brain.
I'm sure im not the only one just a bit frustrated by the path that horror is being led down by "community" projects, indie developers, and hell, even some titles by recognized companies. That's not to say that the formula is bad, stale, or wrong, they each have a sub-genre of horror that fits them well, but for someone like me, it's a little bothersome to see so much of one thing:
Nobody knows why they're where they are or who they are Note driven progression sub-par monsters/AI 50/50 creativity surplus random level generation, (replay value hacks_) jump scares sound queue, visual queue scares (ie. a ghost who appears down a hall, and knowingly cant hurt you, on a large sound queue) absolutely random beasts etc.
To me, these games are "scare factor" games, and not entirely horror, as I knew it to be while growing up 400 years in the past (sarcasm, I aint young anymo.)
The reason I started this thread is because I want to know, first hand, from admirers & advocates of horror and gloom, and from those who have experience with the recent past of horror games...
What actually scares you, what is actually horrific, to YOU.
If you have any thoughts, post them!
Does a certain atmosphere make you uneasy enough to be paranoid? Maybe the concept of something seemingly never ending sort-of haunts you into illusions of fear? What sounds put you on edge? is being alone actually more scary than not? is hearing but not seeing always scary? does blood unsettle you? What environments are horrifying? Monsters? Ghosts? Demons? Aliens? Nature? Bugs? etc
These are just a few example questions to get your minds working, and by no means a guideline on this thread, I want to venture to the dark spots of our minds.
Thanks & be creative!
