Idea for a weekly boards post - Tell us what you think!

EDIT - Thanks for all the thoughts guys! We're iterating on your feedback and some of our own new ideas, and we should be back next week with the kickoff of 'Meanwhile in Top Lane...'

Hey guys! Riot GogoUsagi here. We’ve got an idea for a recurring post here on the boards, and we wanna see what you think and get your feedback. TL;DR: It’d be a weekly post with 1) a roundup of some interesting conversations you may have missed, and 2) a heads up on upcoming discussions opportunities like Q&As.

What we want to tackle with this

A lot happens in a week -- Interesting discussions constantly pop up throughout the League ecosystem only to be replaced by the newest hotness and fall out of visibility. Hot topics of discussion don’t always stay that way for very long, so unless you’re on top of it all day every day (and who has time for that when there’s a ranked ladder to climb?), it’s easy to miss a lot.

So here’s where you come in

To give you a better idea of what we’re thinking, we put together an example post below. Check it out and let us know what we missed as well as your thoughts, feedback, suggestions, and whatever else in the comments -- We wanna hear it all.

On that note, have at it!:

A post made for people who use the forums but also have lives. Interesting

It would be a great idea because it would let us know that you guys are acknowledging the discussions that are of importance to the community.

Please tell me this includes Narrative threads about the lore.Having those threads featured here would help lore fans feel they have been heard/acknowledged.

This idea seems good/bad for a couple of reasons.

Cool, you're making a place where we can check out all the big discussions. What happens if it doesn't meet your definition of big? What happens if it is an unpopular opinion with rioters i.e. Cass didn't need a rework, the Retcon was a failure? How can we be certain that you, as a company, are going to be well-intentioned with this? Shouldn't it be run by a community member, not a rioter? If you only promote the discussions you think were important/impactful, where does that leave any thread that doesn't get traction?

The biggest issue, is this will make popular threads more popular, and take time/attention away from threads that may be important, but people simply haven't looked at yet.

I like the idea but I think this is the wrong direction. Why not pick conversations where rioters haven't been involved and bring an appropriate rioter along into the conversation and infuse it with new information and more dialogue? That seems a better use of your resources with these conversations. Find the appropriate rioter for the appropriate thread, and get them together.

Love the idea. Please do it.

Bouncing off of what Daen said I would think a bit of categorizing between announcements, community creations and simply interesting posts/conversations may be a good thing to do. Possibly break it up per Board/Source maybe? (Just thinking out loud)

Also, formatting. I realize this is an example meant to convey more what content would be shown but if you'd like to give it a bit of an upgrade as far as better readability that'd be nice. (I have a guide here on the Boards detailing some stuff you may not have seen) Hell, change it up every week to see what looks better. I know I personally wouldn't mind a bit of experimentation.

Also, question. Is there going to be one person in charge of this? Handed off occasionally? This is very reminiscent of baconhawk's PotD bit and I'd like this to have a bit of longevity considered into how it's handled.

Another question. Regular community/player input on stuff to consider possibly? There are several things that aren't noticed largely and even recurring things on the Boards like champion concept contests that may be relevant to a project like this. I understand if that's not well-received on your end with setting precedents and expectations of course, but hey, gotta ask right? ^_^

Super awesome. I think maybe you guys should look into hiring the Surrender @ 20 founder for stuff like this, he already does a spectacular job of rounding up Red Posts on his own and I'm sure with a little financial encouragement he would be willing to extend the scope of that project a bit!

While this looks like a good direction, I hope it doesn't mean Riot is going to use this as an excuse for not posting much. It's still not really being involved in the community, simply highlighting things that happened in it.. most without Riot even getting involved in.

Would still like it if Riot would get involved again. =/

Woo new feature testing!

First off, all credit goes to GogoUsagi and ADillonMostDirty. They're really helping to drive this initiative forward in a great way :).

Something that Gogo didn't mention is what we're thinking about naming this feature, also her idea: Meanwhile in Top Lane...

Personally, I think it's great, but I'd love to hear your thoughts.

I think it would be better if there was a bit more structure to it, like...

  • Labeling the source in front of the title

Just something simple, like [REDDIT] or [BOARDS] at the beginning of the title, with a hyperlink to the actual page. It's less confusing than having it in the text.

  • Organizing content by category

Categories can be things like: Riot Announcements, Articles, Community Content, etc. Obviously, there can be more/less depending on the demand.

  • Table of contents

Have a small table of contents at the beginning as a little bit of a preview of the week's post. If possible, make it so that clicking on one of the contents in the table brings it down to the story below.

These are just some suggestions I have for the organization, other than that I think it's fine :)

EDIT: I posted this before seeing Arma and Daen's similar suggestions. Whoops :P

Can I remove the champion mastery system from my account?

Eleshakai4/24/2015, 8:24:22 PM2 votes

Great idea. It is a good step towards making it feel like you guys have a presence on these forums...

But I think the most important thing you guys need to do, if you want to encourage community and to enlarge that presence, is start holding those AMAs here. Wasn't that one of the big reasons WHY you guys used reddit-style for your new 'boards' in the first place?

With the old forums, it was understandable that you'd use reddit to hold Riot official AMAs because they weren't built to support that type of thing. These boards are. So use them.

Thanotos Omega4/24/2015, 8:50:31 PM2 votes

3 ideas,

1: Have a summery of the PBE linked in it each week, all the new skins comparisons between live and PBE stats that kind of thing,

2: An early preview of the new free rotation, having it revealed friday would add a new high point to an average week,

3: end each one with a new piece of Canon trivia, like "Did you know that Cassiopeia and Katarina are only half sisters?"

stuff like that would make the whole thing feel like an event,

Why can't we have such stufferino on EUW forums too? Oh rite, cause nothing interesting happens on our board :^) More seriously, intredasting much. I like the idea.

Upvoted. I think this would be awesome during a week where I get called into work a few more times than I expected and had a bit more college work than I planned on, I wouldn't have the time to look over everything and this would give a good overview I could gleam for the most interesting topics. This isn't to say I wouldn't still take a peek at the other posts. First time on the forums, though I plan to use them weekly now.

Sir ArmaMalum5/5/2015, 7:39:02 PM1 votes

So I am assuming you guys are still shoring up the foundation of this idea, which is perfectly fine, but out of curiosity what day of the week are you all shooting for with this? Saturday could always work, but then again it'd be cool to sync this up with patch days since there's a fair swell in Boards activity while people wait. Or another day, who knows?

Daen4/24/2015, 8:23:27 PM1 votes

I like where this is headed! Stickied threads that function as an amalgamation of content we may or may not have seen are something that I see a ton of value in, and it's awesome that you guys are pursuing this idea.

In my personal opinion, it could be useful to split "official" things like the NA Server Roadmap and the discussion about Jinx away from specifically player-driven content such as the Lissandra animation. Currently, this post feels a bit scattered; some of the roundup pieces are geared towards communication effectiveness between Riot and the community, whereas others are more along the lines of community creations and informal discussion.

I think it's great to accomodate both types of content, I just wonder if it could potentially be more compelling with a clearer split between Riot communication and recreational discussion.

I see lore will not make any debut on this.....welp. Not interested then.
