What makes a support a support?

I know generally a support is a champion that doesn't rely on farm to be successful, a good heal, good cc, or good peels. My question is what are some champions like Nautilus with just cc really amazing supports when champions like Malzahar which has a silence and super hard cc ult and Singed which has really good peel with his adhesive and fling are not viable.

Does it have something to do with scaling or mana costs?

Guess I'm just wondering what makes a good support a good support

Most of all, ability to endure abuse by your Vayne, Ezreal or Jinx. And by your entire team cuz they dont like your ward placement but god forbid that they should put some.

They all sound good in theory, but have some sort of downside that can be abused in a duo lane with a lot of early game fights. Malzahar doesn't have hard CC pre6 and silencing an ADC won't do much less he's Lucian or Ezreal . Singed can actually be an acceptable support, but his poison trail is either used for poke and stealing your carry's minions while you run out of mana after 10 seconds, or you just don't use it at all. Nautilus isn't too far from Singed generally speaking, although he has more reliable damage and less mana usage (unless you use his Q like Blitz every time it's up), but even Nautilus wasn't always considered a good support. Somebody like Orianna is a pretty good support until you realise pre6 Janna can do the same thing while being able to shield and poke at the same time. Lulu also has a shield, but so much more utility that she basically has 6 spells. Supports that harshly need level 6 for a CC / damage powerspike while lacking it before hand are generally not as good, since in higher elos the enemy can easily force out fights in the early game.

That is a big part of it. Supports are the most gold starved role, so the best are ones that scale best with levels and not from items.

Also you preferably want to take as little CS from your ADC as possible. That is difficult with supports like Malzahar/Singed who are great at pushing lanes with their abilities (whether you mean to or not).

Also some champions, even with CC, don't bring much to the role. Why would you want Singed support. Yes he can flip enemy back to you, but in that case why not use Blitz, Naut, or Thresh who can all do that plus more?

I really like playing support but also would like to take my knowledge of the champion im playing to other lanes. I figure if i play one champion in every role besides adc I will have the upper hand no matter what lane im in because of how much I play that one champion. Supports like Karma can play multiple roles and supports likeZyra Morgana can play mid. But i was thinking if i can find a champion that can support but is not well known as a support I would win match ups solely on people not knowing how to deal with me in lane.
