Why is Team Builder gone?
I honestly enjoyed the New Draft Pick when it first came out. It had nice visuals, the system made sense, there wasn't as much power invested in the "Captain," etc. But over time I've realized I'm missing Team Builder more and more, and I can't help but to wonder why Riot took it out?
Now, they've said that they removed it because NDP fulfilled the same role as Team Builder; you can get the role and champ you want before the first pick is made. But the problem is NDP works in such a way that you do not, in fact, get that role or champ all the time.
Because you must select two roles, you may not get the role you want. And if you want a popular role, you probably won't get it at all. Similarly, because of bans and the opposing team picking, you may not get the champ you want to play, especially if they're popular.
Meanwhile, with Team Builder, you were guaranteed to get the role and the champion that you wanted. Sure, the queue times were long, especially if you were in a popular role or looking for a less-popular one, but you could still rest assured that you would get the one you want. Furthermore, Team Builder had a different feel to it entirely. Because of the fact that that matches wouldn't automatically start in a given time frame once a team was found, you could spend a short while talking with your teammates without simultaneously stressing about comps, strategies, counterplay, etc. You could take the time to develop strategies. Or tell a few jokes. With NDP, you only have a precious few seconds during each phase to discuss anything at all, and most of the time, rather than discussing anything, you're figuring out who to ban, who not to ban, which champ counters which other champ, etc. Also, Team Builder led to some fun-in-the-stupid-way comps, or breaking meta roles entirely. You could list yourself as a top support, or have 5 mid, whatever. NDP reinforces the idea that you must have one top, one mid, two bot, and a jungle, and that supports must go bot. Honestly it almost seems that they stopped just shy of adding in "you can only queue for bot if you're listed as a marksman." The other advantage of Team Builder was training. Say you want to get really good at Azir, for example. Mid is a popular role, so you aren't very likely to get it in other queue modes, and if you queue up and don't get mid, your options are to either sit through a game playing a role/champ you don't want to play, or dodge and wait 5/30/however many minutes before you can queue again to maybe get the champ/role you want. However, in Team Builder, you can queue up as Azir/mage/mid, wait for however long it takes to find someone with mage/mid or any/mid, and then you're ready to play. And then you finish that game and can requeue and be confident you're going to get what you want and be able to properly practice your role/champ.
Basically what I'm getting at here is that while there was some overlap in intent, the execution and results of NDP vs Team Builder leads to the feeling that the two are far from mutually exclusive. One gave you the option to mess with the meta however you wanted, or stick rigidly to it, all while guaranteeing your role. The other leads to a feeling of high-pressure during champ pick while reinforcing the meta and meta roles, and possibly giving you the champ/role you wanted.
I'm not saying that NDP is bad in respect; in fact I quite like it. But it isn't the same as Team Builder, not beyond paper, at least.
So all of that said, why did we get rid of Team Builder when it fulfilled a different niche, a different purpose, and a different experience?
