Ekko Preview Trailer Analysis

tldr: Ekko could be an AD assassin who resets time and is from Piltover.

Soooo I just thought I'd put my thoughts down about the Ekko Preview Trailer. From previous Preview trailers, Riot has sometimes hinted as to what abilities the champion will have or how they will play. (See Rek'sai)

At 00:16 we see a pair of broken goggles. The video then shows off a mural of a young boy wearing the goggles.

At 00:20, notice the face on the left as the camera pans out. It could be argued that this face resembles Jinx. I don't recognize any of the other faces, but if anyone has any ideas please share them in the comments!

At 00:29, a large mechanical fist enters the view, hitting our Ekko. As the camera moves further back we see it is the hand of a large augmented Zaun soldier. I'd like to point out the few connections to Vi we have so far: the possible Jinx face in the mural and the mech fist (even though Vi got her fists by other means). Also, from the video's aesthetics and style, it is very comparable to Jinx's music video. So we can assume this is happening in Piltover.

At 00:37, we've seen time reverse and Ekko activates some sort of device on his back. Notice also how Ekko also readjusts his jaw, as if the punch still occurred and the effects of the punch on him were not reversed.

At 00:45, we see Ekko dodges the Zaun warrior's punch and gets a glimpse of the weak points.

At 00:51, after slicing the coolant tube on the mechanical arm, he gets hit back. When he lands, he turns a dial on his hand that reverses time till the point the activated the device. Notice that Ekko takes a deep breath and clutches his chest just before he reverses time.

At 01:02 Ekko clutches again at his chest. He then repeats his attack on the Zaun warrior. We also get a glimpse of how evasive and nimble Ekko is.

At 01:16 Ekko gets kicked back. When he reaches for his sword, his arm gets pinned by the mech fist. He then quickly turns his time dial with his mouth. When he reaches his original state in time, notice that he doesn't use his left arm at all as it seems to be injured after being stepped on.

At 01:45 Ekko defeats the Zaun warrior and he flies back and destroys the mural. We see that the crumbling mural upsets Ekko and he takes a deep breath right before he reverses time again.

**Final Analysis: ** Lore: Ekko could be part of a crime group that lives under Piltover. We see Jinx along with other young faces on the mural. The child with the goggles may be dead or lost since all that is left of him is his broken goggles. Also Ekko seems to have some emotional connection to him because he seems to be the one keeping the goggles and cares about the mural of him.

Gameplay: So we can also try to assume some abilities of Ekko. Ability 1: An ability that sets a check point in time. He then is able to return to his moment in time. Although, it also effects his opponents. His opponents return to their state when Ekko created the time check point. But Ekko's health doesn't reset (notice that Ekko becomes more injured after he resets). A stretch might be that he can also reset time even when cc'd. (His arm being crushed by the Zaun Warrior).

Ability 2: Some ability that allows Ekko to analyze his opponent and find weaknesses. Aka, he gains armor penetration of some sort. It's possible that he gains more armor penetration with each reset too.

Ability 3: Some sort of mobility ability.

Playstyle: I think that he may be a mid-lane AD assassin, judging by his damage and fast movement. His ability to reset time might seem op, but if his health doesn't reset, this could introduce counter play for his lane opponent as they would be at their original health.

If I missed anything or if you have some ideas, please reply in the comments! Thanks everyone and happy Monday, Webhippo

I assumed something along the lines of

Passive: The longer Ekko stays in combat the more info he has on his opponent, making him deal more damage to that enemy

QWE filler abilities mostly based on utility movement and/or possibly on hit damage abilites (like garen or Trundle Q)

R: Active - Ekko sets a checkpoint in time, if reactivated within 5 seconds all characters within X range will be marked and reset to that checkpoint (HP lost by Ekko remains) and Mp cost gets higher Passive - Ekko gains stacks everytime he rewinds (1 on first rewind, 2 on second, etc...) each stack let's him doge the next hit from a marked enemy

I see him mostly as a 1v1 duelist that learns from his mistakes and gets better, his weakness being he is squishy, no ranged attacks and multiple enemies/ multiple attacks, his advantages being he will be very mobile, growing damage and a second chance

I really like your in-depth analysis i didn't note that the enemy was returned to their original state, great note!

i came up with something similar on another thread: at the beginning of the fight he pulled the chain on his device. And whenever he goes back in time he always goes back to that 1 specific point in time. From what I note, he can't just hit a button (or wrist) and go back in time, he has to set a beginning check point to he will always return to.

I think the ult will the same, you have to use forethought and plan where ur check point will be. And I think that an ult that requires skill like that is something that Riot could do. R to set the checkpoint, and R again to go back about 4 sec, he might be able to do this multiple times, but probably at the cost of a longer CD, or more mana. I'm also betting that its effect is limited to a certain radius. And as we all notes it will only reverse his location, the enemies, but its not gonna negate damage or death. He also seems to be pretty fast, so that may be a part of something: temporarily gaining massive MS. While active, you can pass through units and over traps (lasts 1.5 seconds). AP scaling

Pertaining to the note that you made and I missed. This is make up some interesting play when Ekko is in the game. The problem is though; that in Runterra, when Ekko resets the time, the enemy has no idea what they, or what Ekko did, and they will do the same thing. The enemy is always reset, including their mind, while Ekko retains damage he also gains knowledge, and he knows what they will do and how to avoid it. But in our world both sides would know what happened, and they will both try to come up with new strategies after the reverse occurs.

It like when two people playing ""Rock, Paper, Scissors" both get the same thing, now its a huge gamble, and risk of strategies; you both know what happened and now that both of you have a chance to do better, you are trying to plan around the other persons plan.

That is unless of course Riot makes the enemy players do the exact same thing as the time rolls forward until it passes the point of the previous reverse and then the enemy play would get control of their player back to make a new move like what happened in the vid!

I'm thinking he could make a support with the rewind

I would simply like to note that his arm doesn't get stepped on, it is smashed by the fist that he is trying to destroy. Take a close look and you will see it.

People keep saying he's a mid lane assassin, however he is fighting a tank. Last I checked Tanks are mostly junglers and top laners. If he is to be a duelist I see him going more top lane than anything; less gank opportunities means more chances to pull off offensive ultimates. In mid lane most of his 6-11 ults would be used defensively to escape ganks that would otherwise end in death. Which, if it were a point and return type ability, wouldn't work all that well. He also, from the video at least has no skillshot/ranged capability which is usually bad for mid laners. Even Yasuo throws tornadoes.
