@Riot: Factors Influencing Restrictions/Suspensions/Bans

Hey Riot. Just wanted to know a few things about how the process works on deeming who is a severe punishable offender and who should just get a tap on the shoulder and a "you know better." Now saying this I'd like to say that I am aware that the seriousness of the offence is usually the largest factor, and I have read over the tribunal for what is punishable, but I was wondering if anything beyond this is also taken in to consideration.

I know that the tribunal is down so that system is currently not in place and I know that leave buster is a system of its own that delegates its own punishments as well, so I don't need that information clarified.

However, could you or the wonderful community members please clarify which of these (if any) are taken in to the decision when handing punishment and the influencing factor it has on the severity of the punishment?:

  • Repeat offender and the period it takes between a last offence (ban or restriction) before it isn't considered (If I was banned a year ago does that still stay with me for the rest of my LoL days)?
  • Contribution to League of Legends financially in the form of frequent (or infrequent) RP purchasing?
  • Games of pure positive behaviour matched against periods of pure negative behaviour?
  • Defensive argumentation. Was this in response to a rather offensive criticism? Or was this of their own doing?
  • Active community member in the forums?
  • Are some profanities and slurs weighted over others?
  • Apologizing during or after the game? Does this FULLY excuse what was said previously? How do you weight this?

This is all of pure curiosity. I am not mad at anybody in particular that got off easy or someone that was punished too hard. I am not looking for loopholes to be toxic (I'm actually trying to be a better player mentally and seeing allies and enemies as human beings!). I just wanted to know!

So if a rioter or a community member alike would like to answer these inquiries that'd be great! Thanks everyone!

Hopefully, I can shed some light for you. Feel free to ask if you need more clarification. I tried to stay concise, to keep the post from getting too long.

While the Tribunal was active, the severity of punishment was tied directly to recidivism - the more often you were punished, the harsher the punishments got. Currently, while this is a factor, it is no longer the sole contributing factor, and most often tends to result in more of the same type of sanction (continual toxic behavior while on chat restriction yields a larger sum of chat restrictions to work off, for example).

  • Contribution to League of Legends financially in the form of frequent (or infrequent) RP purchasing?

There's no connection between financial support and behavioral systems.

  • Games of pure positive behaviour matched against periods of pure negative behaviour?

This is mostly accounted for by the reporting system itself. Cases are only built when the percentage of reported games crosses a certain threshold - so rare or uncommon periods of toxicity are often passed by simply because no case is built for that player. The specific threshold is unknown, to help prevent players from gaming the system.

  • Defensive argumentation. Was this in response to a rather offensive criticism? Or was this of their own doing?

Retaliation is considered unacceptable. That said, it strongly depends on the content of the response - if you're responding to a toxic player in a non-toxic way, there's no concern. If you're responding to a toxic player in a toxic way, that's punishable.

  • Active community member in the forums?

Forum activity seems to have no relation to the player behavior system.

  • Are some profanities and slurs weighted over others?

In general, profanities aren't punishable in and of themselves. As Lyte has noted, there's nothing wrong with someone saying "Holy shit! Did you see that fucking ult!"

Slurs, however, tend to fall under the heading of hate speech, which is considered to be extreme toxicity (along with death threats and many forms of non-verbal toxicity), and are grounds for escalated bans (2-week to permanent).

  • Apologizing during or after the game? Does this FULLY excuse what was said previously? How do you weight this?

As a general rule, apologies don't excuse much of anything. That said, I imagine there are exceptions (an in-depth apology for a mild instance of toxicity, for example).
