Dear League of Legends
I'm quitting this game. I'm sure those words have been said by millions of people all over the world, but it has some significance for me. You see, I've played this game for 5 years. I saw great champions made like Wukong and Ahri, and experienced every season of competitive play. I have played around 6000 games. That isn't to say that I was ever amazing at this game. The highest point I reached in ranking was gold 2. Either way, I figure after such a vast amount of time spent on this game, I owe it an explanation as to why I'm leaving it so abruptly.

First, I mentioned above that I saw the release of several classic champions. When I first started playing this game, champions were still original. The champions that Riot released had both purpose and a kit that felt both rewarding and not overwhelming at the same time. Champions these days fail to deliver in both aspects of that design. Take Yasuo, for instance. Yasuo is the definition of overloaded. His kit is pretty standard but lies along a lines of completely arbitrary conditions such as a knock-up or a time limit that just don't make sense. This champion could be much simpler and still deliver on his basic design ideal. Balancing a kit like this is nearly impossible, because so many nuances come with each individual ability that messing with one number can throw off his fragile design. Which leads me into my next point.

5 years ago, League of Legends was a relatively small game. It had plenty of players, but it wasn't nearly as massive as it is now. Sadly, as with any game like this, a diverse and bloated player base can cause issues in balancing champions. A great example of this is Udyr. You may disagree with me on this, but the way I see it, Udyr is a very strong champion and his ban and win rate speak for themselves. However, seldom is Udyr seen in pro play simply because he is so easy to counter with a more advanced skillset and teamwork. You see, lower skill players fall victim to a company that has to balance to a higher-level eSports scene. To make Udyr seem like an attractive champion to high-level players, he has to have larger numbers to compensate for his simple lack of other areas. However, buff these numbers and you soon find that Udyr either is banned in or wins any game in gold through bronze. The same is true for a number of champions.

Currently, the draft system is incredibly horrible and is what I would say the main reason for why I'm quitting this game. I enjoy playing ranked games and I enjoy the sort of purpose it seems to give. When I made it to gold 2 last season I was so happy. This new draft mode completely screwed any hope I would have of enjoying ranked ever again. I should start by saying that I main mid and jungler. Talon got me to where I was and playing him was what I enjoyed about this game for 2 years. Nowadays, if I want to play my best roles, I would have to wait an incredibly long time to get into a game. I don't want to wait 8 minutes of queue time to play 1 game. That isn't worth my time, especially when the average LP gain is less than 20. The only way I can actually get into a game in a timely fashion is to pick fill, which essentially translates to support. In fact, I have played around 30 ranked games in the past few weeks and have picked fill for around 25 of them and have gotten support every time. I don't mind supporting, I really don't. I actually think it's fairly fun. But I am not a good enough support to be able to win games for my team. Also, when I support, I have a lesser probability of being able to carry my team. This means that if I'm supporting I'm leaving my chances of gaining that small amount of LP in the hands of people I don't know. I realize that I could suck it up and find a ranked team, but I want to be able to play solo queue more than I would if I was basing my playing time around several people's schedules.
If anybody actually read to that point, then congratulations. I'd like to say that I hope that Riot figures out a way to fix these problems. There are some things in the future like hextech crafting that look really cool, but I just don't feel like I should continue to play this game. I still love playing this game, and it's incredibly fun, but the only way I can see to fix this problem is to hope that Riot figures it out. That's what this post is about--to help them figure it out. And Riot is a good company, who I believe listens to their fans, so I do have some faith. If I don't come back, then I wish you the best of luck, League of Legends.
