The future of the MOBA scene

So I've been thinking a lot about how static and similar MOBAs really are when compared to other genres. The maps are similar, you do exactly the same and the roles are pretty much always the same (especially in League).

So what should we expect from future MOBA games? Can games take a drastic turn and still be considered MOBAs? Sure! A MOBA is just a Multiplayer Online Battle Arena, as stated, so anything within a map that has two opposing teams that fight each other should be considered a MOBA.

What if there was for example a medieval-themed MOBA, where instead of farming minions, you actually have a farm, and one of your teammates is a farmer instead of jungler and another can be some sort of saboteur that tries to burn crops? And instead of huge-ass swords on bow-wielding champions, you could actually pick up different weapons from a depot that you could use, and upgrade those weapons with different abilities as you progress throughout the game? Some weapons could include a katana, a lance, a bow & arrow, a torch (to burn crops) and a pitchfork (to farm with), all of them with different abilities. The "champions" would be normal people that you could customize yourself, and add cool names to. Wouldn't that be amazing?

Anyone have any other suggestions for future MOBA-concepts? Bring em on :D

I have some great experience with both Dota, LoL and some with HotS. I don't quite share your sentiment about the similarity between MOBA games. I feel like I'm playing a completely different game when playing Dota as compared to LoL. A full melee team in Dota happens quite often, the flexible 1-5 standard role system in Dota is a world away from LoL's ADC/Support-Jungler-Mid-Top lane setup. Trilanes? Unheard of in LoL! But its a fairly common strat in Dota.
