Advice for playing ranked?

The thought of doing ranked REALLY stresses me out- I've only had five provisional games finished for the past few months now. The problem is that unless I'm in exactly the right mindset, it's hard for me to even enter the ranked queue (sometimes I get butterflies in my stomach just thinking about it). My W-L is currently 4-1, and think I have a shot at mid-high silver if I do well in the rest of my games, but the problem is that I'm such a little bitch.

So, my question is, what do you guys do to de-stress yourself before playing a ranked game? I really want to finish the rest of my games before summer ends, but I just get freaked out so easily sometimes.

Why do you want to play ranked?

I got into ranked because i wanted to try and climb.

Got silver 5 after losing 6 provisionals.

Proceded to lose 6 games in a row after.

The best thing is to start a game when you're fresh

Okay, biggest thing to know is that even professional players have something along the lines of a 60% win ratio, meaning you shouldn't go in expecting a constant win streak. Now, I'm not saying a loss is nothing but instead of making a loss a purely negative thing go into your games focused and intent on improving, win or lose there should be something you've taken away from it. For me, that helps a lot because it makes a loss less intimidating and by extension half of the fear of going into ranked.

Focus less on your win/loss and more on your play in the game. The enemy team and your team could care less if you're 4-1 or 9-0 or 14-0. It's how you're doing in that specific game that counts, so if your win streak doesn't speak out, make sure your play does.

That and classical music, Beethoven helps :)

  1. turn off all chat: if you are concerned about what the enemy team is saying then you are paying less attention to what you are doing

  2. only talk to your team if its necessary: same reason as above instead of typing everything learn to use smart pings efficiently

  3. don't play while on tilt: this should be obvious

  4. know how to play every role: this is especially important. if you don't know how to play supp don't play ranked.

  5. play smarter not harder: instead of bashing away at the enemy look for ways to exploit their weaknesses.

  6. you cannot win every game: learn this now and you will suffer less later

  7. towers > kills: towers win the game not kills

As someone who plays exclusively Ranked games, I will explain what you'll expect from each ELO. Generally to remove stress I just take breaks in between matches and keep trying if I flop up a few times in games. No matter what, as long as you keep playing you'll eventually gain ELO.

Bronze ELO- Everyone in Bronze ELO (often referred to as "ELO HELL") falls into one of these categories. They are:

  1. Casual League gamers who play Ranked every now and then simply because they find it interesting.
  2. People who want to become better at the game but struggle with certain mechanics such as farming and jungling.
  3. People who simply enjoy ruining everyone else's chances at gaining ELO because they think it's fun or they're on some sort of drug.
  4. People who are fully capable of gaining ELO but spend most of their time being toxic leaving them stuck in Bronze.
  5. People who claim they have "Call Order" right and demand no matter where they are on the pick chart that they are given the lane they want or else they will throw the match on purpose.

Silver ELO- Similar to Bronze ELO, with only a few discrepancies. The categories of player are:

  1. Players who managed to develop good mechanics making them above average players, but they still lack a certain skill to gain more ELO.
  2. Players who possess/developed inflated egos due to their belief that since they broke out of Bronze ELO they're on the cusp of going Pro.
  3. Players who used FoTM (Flavor of The Month) champions to out-muscle their way to Silver. They still possess Bronze-level mechanics. (Keep in mind: All matches in Silver ELO are swayed far more by player skill than champion counters.)

Gold ELO- Arguably one of the most stressful tiers to be in. The categories of players are:

  1. Players who are clearly above average and have developed skills with at least one champion allowing them to play close to perfection.
  2. Players who tirelessly won games to reach Gold 5 ELO just to sit on it until the end of the season just for the Victorious Skin.
  3. Lone Wolves who are quite skilled on their own but still lack good team coordination.
  4. Ideal League players who have good sportsmanship, good mechanics, and have an extraordinary amount of skill.
  5. Players with incredibly inflated egos but have developed their mechanics very well.

Platinum ELO- A bit less stressful than Gold, but some similarities. The categories are:

  1. Ideal League players who have good sportsmanship, good mechanics, and have an extraordinary amount of skill.
  2. MMR boosters, their personalities tend to be unpredictable.
  3. Players who tirelessly won games in an effort to get the Victorious Skin of the season, but felt like they wanted to reach a higher milestone to sit on than Gold ELO.

Diamond ELO- Extremely skilled players litter this ELO. They still have categories, however.

  1. Ideal League players who have good sportsmanship, good mechanics, and have an extraordinary amount of skill.
  2. MMR boosters, at this point they are often obnoxious and egotistic.
  3. Players who tirelessly won games in an effort to get the Victorious Skin of the season, but felt like they wanted to reach a higher milestone to sit on than Gold ELO.
  4. Players who frustratingly try their hardest to hit Challenger Tier, but fail for some unexpected reason.

Challenger- This tier is heavily populated with the best of the best. If you're here, you might just make it onto the pro player circuit. Don't screw up and act as a model for others to follow.

Good luck on your first incursion into Ranked Matches! -Sebastian

(P.S: I love Adventure Time with Fionna and Cake, too!)

To Destress myself I put myself on some Rock and roll on http://grooveshark.com/#!/migmagnific/broadcast And Rock out playing league. heck I just got to b4 today from my flimsy B5 Rank. If you're looking for some jams to calm you down just go to the one above Pandora radio or Plug.dj, Migmagnific is a Rock channel whilst grooveshark is a free pandora. Pandora can give you some good music and plug.dj is all techno music.

Here's the secret:

It's a game! Don't take it so seriously! Haha. Just have fun man. A ranked loss isn't the end of the world; it wont make or break you. There's always next game! If you lose a game, just try to learn from it for next time. :)

Whenever I solo Q i always start shivering out of nervousness pretty hard, if you wear a sweater or a jacket it makes you feel less shaky and nervous.

Also remember, it's just a game and every time you lose a game it isn't a loss, it's a chance to look back and improve upon your mistakes, and that is a victory in its own right. That should maybe help you not take it so seriously.

Play a warm-up match or two, even if its against bots, to get your head in the game and your fingers ready.

Be in a good mood. The kind of mood that, even with a loss, you go "Oh well, there's always next time." Also, don't be intimidated by skins, They could have the most expensive skin available and be rock bottom in a Bronze V group. I've supported for, and beat enough, "I'm awesome, dude" Pulsefire Ezreals to make me wish I wasn't a support. Unless its a Victorious Skin, in that case be very, VERY cautious.

I also find that going in thinking positive, and with a mental note for Bans always helps.

If you lose, don't just think, "I suck" and have that dwell on you, realize what you did wrong and work on not doing it again. Sometimes the losses aren't your fault. You get a certain feel when the support has done better in lane than the ADC and Top.

Personally, I think you are over thinking it! It's just a game =)

Enjoy it rather than stressing out over ranked... I understand it's competitive play.. but its a game =P
