A cheap way to learn languages?

So, I'm somewhat of a hobby linguist. I eventually plan on learning a language from every major region in the world. So far, I've got English (obviously), Spanish, German and a bit of French. Looking into learning Japanese next, with Russian (or some other Slavic langauge) after that, and then we'll see from there.

But, college courses are expensive, as is something like Rosetta Stone. Is there anywhere that I won't spend many hundreds to thousands of dollars to learn a language?

Join the Army. They will teach you more and pay you for it as a translator. Probably Arabic and/or Chinese would be what they would try to pressure you into at the moment.

Check out Duolingo: www.duolingo.com

It doesn't have Japanese yet (or last I checked), but it has a lot of other languages and is a great system for getting your basic proficiency in a language.

Japanese is definitely it's own weird conundrum. The best thing for starting out learning Japanese is probably the "Human Japanese" app. First 10 chapters or something are free, check it out. I've never gotten beyond intro Japanese stuff, but have never heard of anyone who learned the language without using a lot of different resources and working really hard at it.

The Duolingo forums are also full of people who are polyglots, so that is a great place to find other resources and ideas.

Best luck to you on your journey!
